workaround... add a third map to the top. put everything you want the user to interact with in the top map. the downside is that MapTips will display on the top map so you can't 'hide' maptips that are only relevant to one or the other bottom two maps. let the top map govern the control of the bottom two maps by tying all extent and rotation events to the top map. makes for a much smoother display experience

I'm not sure if someone read this and made a change, but thank-you. the World Imagery, being used as a Dynamic Service, now seems to stay visible at all scale ranges. Thanks again, I guess...

Hello, I've been using the 'slide' example here ArcGIS API for Silverlight - Interactive Samples but now the challenge is to get maptips working in both. I have Feature Layers and associated MapTips for each map (above and below). The maptips only work on the top map. my best guess is that even though the code is setting an opacity for the top map, which is great for a visual effect, but hovering a mouse on the below map won't let the mouse actually hit the below map. I've experimented with setting the .IsHitTest property on the above map to false, but of course you get the opposite effect because the mouse doesn't hit the top map now. anyone up for the challenge?... I didn't know about the opacity mask until I saw this example so hopefully there are a lot more tricks out there that I'm missing. Thanks, Dave

can the minimum scale be overridden? I'm using World_Imagery (MapServer) as a Dynamic Layer (I'm mixing Spatial resolution reverted to Dynamic within my Silverlight code) but the min scale is too high on this service (5.9) I'm, not concerned with image quality being poor, I just want to ignore the min scale. any suggestions or another imagery to use. Thanks

Is it possible to view a file geodatabase in sql management studio? I have a simple file geodatabase that I would like to analyse with a few sql queries. I've read the help doc ArcGIS Help 10.1 but I don't understand where they are suggesting to write the SQL queries or how to connect sql management studio to a file geodatabase. are these examples just meant to be used in the layers definition query within arcmap. I feel like I'm missing something very simple here and just need a little push. Thanks, Dave

This is a great technique to turn one feature into many, if multiple joined records exist. My procedure is similar: 1) MakeFeatureLayer 2) AddJoin using 'Keep_Common' (assuming you are expecting a 1:M join) 3) CopyFeatures or FCtoFC you can't see the 1:M multiple records after step2, but they will export to a new polygon / point etc in step3 NOTE, I can't get this to work in SDE, only GDB's It is also a throwback to the coverages / regions / aml days where we did this quite regularly.

After viewing my newly cached images, on top of another solid layer, I noticed speckles showing on the imagery. These speckles turned out to be the bottom layer showing through the PNG's 'background'. Apparently a PNG's header info contains a single color that represents the transparent background. In the process of caching, this background value is inherited from the background value of the source ArcMap document's dataframe. If not altered, the default is 253, 253, 253. After caching, every pixel with the rgb of 253, 253, 253 will be treated as transparent and therefore show any colors that are below it (in whatever application you are using your final cache in) If you are displaying your cache directly over white, no big deal, if not, expect to see odd 'speckles'. Since I am displaying my cache over another cache and there is some overlap, before caching I had to set my dataframe's background to something obscure and unnatural like rgb, 200, 100, 200 and hope that there weren't many pixels with this value. I should also mention that there are settings in ArcMap to change the transparent color of your cache to 'none', but this may not help if you are not using ArcMap. I'm writing this as a partial solution, only because there is not any info out there about this. Discussion and input is more than welcome. Thanks

Thanks for this post. It saved me a few more days of trouble shooting even though two were already wasted. EXTREMELY frustrating to have functionality deteriorate year after year. (at least 25% of my job time goes to chasing bugs and error codes, and 'not responding') .....and the bug still exists in 10.2.2

Hello, I need some creative thinking here. Is there a way to use QueryTask to query a GraphicLayer or List<Graphics>. This graphic layer will be a result of a GeometryService.LabelPointsAsync so there isn't a URL to pass into the constructor. I'm trying to mimic ArcMap's Select By Location using the centroid option. None of the other API SpatialRelationships will do. Thanks, Dave

Hi Matt, probably a little late but.... I sort of had the opposite, after adding a scale level with that tool I still had to go to the Service through Manager and adjust the Maximum Scale and restart the service in order for the Create Tiles to recognize the newly added scale. Maybe you have to do the same to make sure it know that your bottom scale was deleted. curious if you Max Scale is still your previous bottom level or if that was removed and it shows your new bottom level yet? just a thought, haven't tested it..... Thanks very much Phillip, This is probably what I'm running into, although I won't be able to test until I get a 10.2 dev box running. I appreciate the specific answer. Dave

very interesting, thanks for the post. I had to restore my 10.1 Server because of intermittent QueryTask failures on my 10.2.2 trial (using Silverlight API 3.1) could this be a similar issue? Server Logs were saying failure to convert string 12345.123 to int. but it should be a string and stay a string throughout, and I have no idea what process is trying to convert it into an int. I try to understand the technology behind all of this but get lost when queries get jammed through so many different formats (JSON syntax as you mention).......

Is there any documents or white papers on the changes made to the REST services. I've read from other posts that it communicates entirely through JSON now. I'm no where near an expert on communication protocol but something has changed along the line somewhere. My Silverlight application (API 3.1) is having intermittent trouble with the QueryTask. some posts are suggesting that it can't communicate properly with JSON Extremely tough to read about stuff like this ahead of time so you don't know you're in trouble until it's too late. Thanks, Dave

hello, how can I check the user's geometry before it gets passes to the editor? I'm using editor in rectangle mode (I use rectangle because it accepts points which is great) but if the user draws a perfectly straight line nothing gets selected. I need to intercept it somewhere before the editor actually gets called, to check the geometry. to be clear, the code returns fine with an empty selection, no errors at all, until I check my Server Logs. In Server Manager I get: "Geodatabase error: The number of points is less than required for feature" to me this means the SL code lets the line pass, but the .MapServer doesn't know how to handle it. Thanks,
