Traditionally, accessing American Community Survey (ACS) data required processing the newest estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau each year, taking days to weeks of time. Since 2018, many ACS tables are readily available within ArcGIS Living Atlas of the World to use within your GIS workflows. These Census ACS Living Atlas layers are updated automatically each year when the U.S. Census Bureau releases their annual estimates, and as of December 11, 2020, they now contain the newest 2015-2019 5–year estimates. For more information, see What's new with Census ACS Living Atlas layers (Fall 2020).

This is a nice example of one of the many ways that you can use StoryMaps. From the Kentucky Geological Survey, it's their 2019-2020 Annual Report. The post begins with a message by State Geologist Bill Haneberg saying: "...we at KGS decided to change the look and delivery of our annual report. Printing and mailing a 50-ish-page full-color report cost us thousands of dollars each year and tied us to a static and timeworn format. We mailed hundreds of copies of our annual report to people on our mailing list each year but rarely knew if they were read or not. So we decided to do things differently. This year, like so many other things in our lives, the KGS annual report is online in a format that allows links to supporting files, interactive graphics, and videos. Everyone on our annual report mailing list will receive a postcard with a scannable QR code that will bring up the annual report on desktop and mobile devices..." A great idea that should be copied by others!

For the past few years, Esri has built and hosted an OpenStreetMap Vector Basemap that is available to ArcGIS users and developers. This vector basemap is built by Esri using OpenStreetMap (OSM) data and is updated every few weeks with the latest OSM data edits. Esri is pleased to announce the OpenStreetMap Daylight map in ArcGIS, now available in beta release. The OSM Daylight map will be built and hosted by Esri using the latest available version of the Daylight Map Distribution. For more information, see Dawn of OSM Daylight in ArcGIS.

Says @AndrewSkinner : "Sometimes it seems we are obsessed with using red and green in our maps. It’s an easy option! Red for bad, green for good … yes? But some users have difficulty differentiating between red and green. About 8% of the world’s population (overwhelmingly, but not exclusively, male), suffer from some form of color blindness, and over 99% of them have a red-green deficiency." Check out Andy's recent blog article covering this topic: Red... Green... What?

ArcGIS Living Atlas content can be used to understand current status, change, and what might happen in the future. Living Atlas includes layers published from data created as part of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Office for Coastal Management's efforts to deliver depicting potential sea level rise and its associated impacts on the nation's coastal areas. The example below uses swipe capabilities in Media Map, one of the newly updated configurable app templates, to show the 1-foot, 3-foot, and 6-foot inundation. To learn how to build a similar app, see Use swipe in Media Map. Learn more about the NOAA layers used in the map.

Yesterday was GIS Day and I was happy to see the day capped with the publication of the latest issue of ArcWatch, my favorite Esri pub that helps me keep up to date with Esri GIS. ArcWatch has something for everyone, whether you're a GIS expert wanting to learn more about Pro or analysis, a beginner looking for tips, or a decision maker examining how others meet their workflow needs and challenges using ArcGIS. Look for the big, blue Subscribe button on the bottom of the page. And check out the archive of past ArcWatch issues, it's a great resource to read and share with others.

One of my favorite ArcGIS Living Atlas apps - World Imagery Wayback - was just updated with a new swipe mode. This makes it really easy to use the Wayback archives and to look at change over time. Another great feature about swipe mode is that if you click share while in swipe mode, the chosen layers and extent are captured. So you can do some interesting things sharing change over time. For example: View change over time in Las Vegas, Nevada View change over time at Beijing Daxing International Airport Learn more about the changes to Wayback by checking out Do the Wayback swipe.

ArcGIS Living Atlas is continually updating... improving... adding new content, apps, and more. Keeping up to date with what's going on can be a challenge, but this latest ArcGIS Living Atlas News (November 2020) delivers the latest summary. ArcGIS Living Atlas is also summarized in each ArcGIS Online What's New blog article, which delivers with every release. The Living Atlas section can viewed there, and a direct link is now available. Here's the Living Atlas summary for September in the ArcGIS Online release blog article. One of the key improvements is to the World Imagery Wayback app. The app now has a swipe mode which makes it easier than every before to compare imagery from the Wayback archives, and also to share a URL that enables others to view change over time. Here's @RobertWaterman blog article encouraging you to Do the Wayback swipe.

Wayback imagery is a digital archive of the World Imagery basemap with more than 80 different versions of imagery captured over the last 5 years. The World Imagery Wayback app lets you browse for changes in your area of interest and lets you make a map with versions of interest. Swipe mode is a newly added capability that makes it easy to compare selected imagery, and pushes it even higher up my favorite Living Atlas app list. One of the things I really like is that you can click share (or copy the URL) when in swipe mode and get a link that captures the chosen imagery and the location. This makes it really easy to look at change over time and share that with others. Here's a couple of examples: View change over time in Las Vegas, Nevada View change over time at Beijing Daxing International Airport Here's my colleague @RobertWaterman blog article announcing the new capability and encouraging you to Do the Wayback swipe. Another great feature is that you can select the imagery you want and make a map directly from the app. I've used this to solve problems that a couple of users wrote me about. One was in rural Canada and an imagery updated introduced some clouds in their area. Another was in the northeast U.S. and an imagery updated had snow on the ground, something they did not want. Using Wayback it was easy to go back to a previous vintage to get the desired imagery. The workflow is covered in Use World Imagery Wayback to create a custom basemap.
