An OS Revision of 5.1.16 means that you were already at the current release. I take it you did a second factory reset since you got to the steps of upgrading your unit's OS? If so, go ahead and download / install 10.0.3. Any change in behavior with the new version?

Which OS version do you currently have? The Release Notes mention that you must be at v5.1.15 before you can upgrade to v5.16. Perhaps you're more than one version back and need to step your way up?

It's going to be tough to narrow this one down. Here's my best suggestion. 1. Perform another factory reset. 2. Upgrade the Operating System of the GeoXH 2005 to v5.1.16. 3. Upgrade the GPS firmware to v1.82 4. Download and install ArcPad 10.0.3 (10 R3) from your Customer Care site.

Are you using ArcPad 10 SP3 (10.0.3)? Normally I would recommend a factory reset, but didn't you just complete one of those earlier this week?

Jacob, Now that I'm thinking about it, I do remember an issue I've seen from time to time with that GeoExplorer 2005 series device. A year or so ago I talked with someone that was having a similar gwes.exe / device.exe issue with their 2005 series using ArcPad 7.1.1. I was not able to reproduce the issue on my 2005 series device, until I updated to the latest firmware. After updating the device firmware, I started to receive those errors, but only when browsing for files through Add Data. A bug was logged for 7.1.1 related to this issue. A few weeks back, I got wind of the same issue happening in ArcPad 10 on the GeoXH 2005 series. This may be random, but that issue may have been related to Trimble's TrimPix. Are you: 1. Using TrimPix? 2. Browsing for files when the error occurs? If you're not browsing for files, at what point are you receiving these errors?

David, I'm glad to hear you're on the right track. As far as the crowded labels are concerned, why don't you investigate converting your labels to annotation. There are two types of annotation: map based annotation and geodatabase annotation. Map based annotation is save directly to the mxd and is not transferable to other documents. Geodatabase annotation resides as a feature class in a geodatabase, so you can use it in many mxd's. When you convert labels to annotation they become static features in the map. They no longer change location or size when zooming in and out. Because of this, when you convert your labels to annotation you must do so at a specific reference scale, which is the scale you will be printing your map at. The nice thing about annotation is you can manually move them around your map so they don't overlap with other labels. Your other option would potentially be Maplex (an advanced labeling engine) which is available if you have an ArcInfo license. Maplex provides more "rules and weights" which can be setup to prevent the overlapping of labels. - - - - - To limit the extent of features that draw on the map (only California, for example), you would mainly have three options. 1. Clip the data frame to the extent of a feature class. If you have a feature class with all 50 states, you also have the option to clip to a selected feature. 2. Clip your feature class(es) permanently to obtain features which only reside within a specific area. If you had the state of CA, you could clip highways, rivers, etc, based upon this feature. 3. Export selected features as their own feature class. If you had a polygon feature class of the fifty states, you could select California, and export that selected feature out to its own feature class.

Jacob, This is a low memory related warning. Your map probably contains too many (or too large) feature classes in the map. You'll need to limit the number of feature classes (among other possibilities) so that your map will open. There is the possibility that it's one or two feature classes that are the main instigators, you can use the process of elimination to determine this. Please see my post on 11-17-2011 @ 08:54 AM in the following thread for other things to look at which may be adding to the issue.

David, 1. To create your circles with the ID number inside, just use dynamic labeling. If you don't want a point to show at all (just the number in a circle) change the fill of the point to "No Color". You'll also have to click "Edit Symbol' and change the Outline color to No Color as well. For the label: (a) Go to the Labels tab of the Layer Properties > Select Label features in this layer > Choose your ID field as the Text String field. (b) Click on the "Symbol" button > Edit Symbol > Advanced Text tab > Check on Text Background > Click on Properties (c) Change the Type to Marker Text Background > Click on the Symbol button and select a circle of appropriate size (Circle 2 is pretty good) > Click on Edit Symbol > Underneath 'Layers' on the bottom left, you'll see two actual pieces here, the inside and the outline of the circle. Click on the inside layer and change the color to white. (You could also delete the inside if you only wanted an outline) Click OK until you get back to the Layer Properties > Labels tab. (d) Click on Placement Properties > Place label on top of the point > Click OK > Click OK 2. For adding the table to the display: (a) Go to the Layer Properties > Fields tab > Check OFF the visibility for all fields except ID and Store Name. (b) Go to Layout View > Open the Attribute Table > From the dropdown in the upper left (white piece of paper) select 'Add Table to Layout' This will add the table to the layout with only your two fields visible. You mentioned something about separating the tables into two pages, not sure what you meant there, but if the option above for adding a table doesn't work, I'd suggest building the table you want in excel and then going to Insert Menu > Object, and adding the excel table from there. Does this help?

Richard, Are you using ArcPad 10.0.3? When you collect a new feature, the edit form opens and you're able to add whatever attribute information you wish. At the bottom of that form is a small green arrow pointing to the right. This is the Repeated Attributes tool. At the time you are collecting that first feature (and you know you want to collect more features with the same attribute) press this arrow. It will turn orange, indicating that any additional features will use the same attributes. If you don't have that arrow on your edit form, you're probably using a previous version of ArcPad (10.0.1 or older). If this is the case, you need to manually add that button to a toolbar. Via the ArcPad Toolbar Manager (10.0.1 and older), drag over the "Repeated Attributes" tool from the left hand column to one of your toolbars on the right. If you're using 10.0.2 or newer, the toolbar manager has been replaced by Design Mode. Does this help?

I wonder if the page isn't loading properly. Here's what you should find under that topic. Resetting to factory default settings If a soft reset, or hardware based soft reset, does not resolve the issues you are experiencing, perform a reset to factory default settings. Warning: Resetting to factory default settings erases all data and software installed on the handheld. 1. Turn on the handheld. 2. Press and hold the power button until the handheld turns off. 3. As soon as the handheld turns off, continue to hold the power button down and press the two application buttons. When you see a warning about data loss, release all buttons and follow the instructions on the screen.

Sounds like something has really gotten corrupt on that mobile device. The quickest way out of this one is probably going to be a factory reset. The reset and installation of ArcPad can be completed in less than 15 minutes. Use the Geo2005 Reset Guide to reset the device to Factory Default Settings. Note: the "application buttons" that the guide refers to are the two buttons with horizontal lines on the handheld. Any luck after the reset?

Ryan, That would technically be breaking the ArcPad licensing agreement. The licensing agreement says that one license of ArcPad is good for one desktop machine and one mobile device. In the particular scenario you mentioned it would be necessary to have two licenses of ArcPad so that the licensing agreement is not broken. 😞
