Peter, That's sort of a strange error to be getting. That error seems to say that the shx file may have been corrupted and is having trouble putting the dbf and shp together. I'm guessing if you ran it through this ArcScript you may be able to open it. Read the header and then build a new shx. How are you transferring these files back and forth between the mobile device and your computer? Do you copy and paste the files with windows explorer or do you have a sync folder setup? Are you trying to open these files in ArcPad or ArcMap? Do you use ArcGIS Desktop as well? If you do, I might focus on perhaps modifying your workflow to begin using the geodatabase. If you can use ArcMap to check the data in and out from a geodatabase it would be much more stable. Any additional info you have would help to get this on the right track. Thanks.

Chris, Can you expand a little bit more regarding the exact pieces of equipment you're using and the software versions? Additionally, what method are you using to connect to real time data? Normally you would need either a 3G SIM connection or a radio connection to get this data. I've used RTK with ArcPad using a GeoXH 6000 with 3G card combined with GPScorrect. Any additional info might help narrow this one down. Thanks.

Stephanie, When you export the feature class (or copy and paste) from the personal geodatabase into SDE the domains should automatically come along with it. If you copy and paste the feature class / table from one geodatabase to another, you should see the domains listed in the Data Transfer window. In the Data Transfer window, do you not see any domains listed? Under 'Type' you should see "CV Domain and/or Range Domain".

Each User Profile will be asked for the registration number the FIRST time that they launch ArcPad. This is because the registration number is stored in the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive within the registry. Any time that profile opens ArcPad (this log-in or a later log-in) ArcPad should launch as registered. If you are experiencing behavior other than this (such as you enter the password, log out, log in, and it asks you for it again) then it probably has something to do with permissions associated with their user profile.

The number one reason you would experience this behavior: The DataForArcPad folder was accidentally deleted from... C:\arcgisserver\arcpadpublications If you don't have a folder called 'DataForArcPad' within the arcpadpublications directory, create a new one. This folder is used to store the .zip and cab files which get deployed to the device consuming the ArcPad service. If you had to create the folder above, delete your service, delete the corresponding folder in arcpadpublications (but NOT DataForArcPad!), and re-create the service. Any luck?

Mike, What's the exact process that you're going through? Are the instructions similar to what's included in this web help article? You should be able to run the included script through the python window of ArcMap and combine multiple pdf's.

David, Perhaps you weren't editing the geodatabase annotation correctly? You need to be in an edit session and use tools from the Topology toolbar. You cannot edit geodatabase annotation with the Drawing tools. Not sure why the clip to extent is slow when you turn off the visibility for your counties layer. I would suggest clipping to the extent of a single polygon the shape of CA. Make a dissolved copy of your counties if you don't have any other feature classes with this data. Or, you could use the states feature class from the Data & Maps provided with ArcGIS Desktop. In regards to the packages, what service pack of ArcGIS Desktop 10 are you using? If you're at SP0 and the layer package was created at SP1 or later you wouldn't be able to open it. If you don't have any service packs, I would suggest installing Service Pack 4.

Kai, At version 10.0 this is not possible. The only export options that you have are to export a list of the total amount of errors / type via ArcCatalog. ArcCatalog > Topology Properties > Errors Tab > Generate Summary However, in the upcoming release of 10.1 there is a new GP tool which will do exactly this. Actually, it outputs to a feature class, but if you wanted only the table you could export the attribute table from there. Export Topology Errors (Data Management) @ 10.1 With this new GP tool you can also access it via python.

Christopher, Unfortunately, it is not possible to print a legend in an ArcGIS Explorer Map, whether using ArcGIS Explorer for the desktop or ArcGIS Explorer Online. Check out the Print a Map help topic which discusses which items will print via ArcGIS Explorer Online. Here is a blog which discusses a workaround for adding a legend to printed maps with ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. I haven't tried it, but perhaps you can save your ArcGIS Explorer Online map, open it through the Add Data dialog in Explorer for the desktop, and then use the workaround from the blog above? Haven't tried it, but it's worth a shot.

Matthew, This is a known issue in ArcPad and is currently logged as a bug. It's an issue with high resolution devices, which most after the GeoExplorer 2008 / Juno SB are. I've mostly seen this issue with 32x32 bitmaps, but I've seen it with other sizes as well. You could try them as 16x16, but no guarantees. 😞

That's strange. Rename your My ArcPad folder, startup ArcPad, and re-check the JPEG2000 extension in the Advanced Settings. ...\My Documents\My ArcPad Rename My ArcPad to My ArcPadOLD, or something like that. When you start ArcPad back up it will generate a new folder. Any luck?

David, 1. This is what I was referring to in my first post. "If you don't want a point to show at all (just the number in a circle) change the fill of the point to "No Color". You'll also have to click "Edit Symbol' and change the Outline color to No Color as well." The symbol you see under the layer in the Table of Contents is different than the label. This is the symbol that displays the point on the map. I had you change the location of the label in an earlier post to sit "On top of the point" so that it would fall exactly where the point was. If you hadn't changed this option, the label would draw a short distance away from the actual feature. If you click on the symbol in the Table of Contents it will bring up the Symbol Selector. Click on 'Edit Symbol'. You can change the 'Color' to 'No Color' and the 'Outline' to 'No Color'. Then it won't be visible at all on the map. 2. I would suggest using geodatabase annotation. When you convert, if you have unplaced annotation, you can see these via the Attribute Table. Right-click the feature class in the TOC and open the attribute table. In the 'Status' field you will see your Placed and Unplaced annotation. Check out this web help article which should help you get it placed on your map. Once it's placed you can move them around. 3. If your states layer is actually just one polygon of the whole US, you're right, there's really no way to clip to California. However, if the states layer is actually made up of the 50 states, you can select California and then use that selected feature for clipping. (a) Select California, either with Select by Attribute or by simply using the Interactive Select tool. (b) Open the Data Frame Properties > Data Frame tab > Clip to Shape > Specify Shape (c) Outline of Features > States feature class > Features: Selected Otherwise, clipping to your CA counties works just as well. As long as you get the result you want, doesn't really matter how you get there. 😉 4. Format the attribute table? Not so much... The only options you really have come via the open attribute table. Click on the white piece of paper in the upper left > Appearance. You can change the font, font size, font color, column header, and cell size, but that's about it. I'd suggest doing all of your formatting in Excel and then Insert it into ArcMap as an Object. You can export the attribute table via the same menu where you found the 'Appearance'. Export it out to a dbf and then open it in excel. Do all of you formatting (background colors, fonts, etc) and then save it. (a) In ArcMap > Insert Menu > Object (b) Create from File > Navigate to your xlsx > OK Voila! You're almost there!

Unfortunately there isn't. You would have to put it into a geodatabase which resides in SQL Server (at that point it would just become a feature class, wouldn't really be connected to the SQL Server spatial data type anymore). Without the file being in a geodatabase, it cannot utilize the functionality required for editing.

Ah, my apologies. In order to make a layer editable it must reside in either a single-user or multi-user geodatabase. If it resides outside of a geodatabase, you will not be able to edit the layer in ArcGIS for Windows Mobile. From the looks of it, you've just got a table outside of a geodatabase which has the geography spatial data type, correct?
