Eddie, Which version of ArcGIS Desktop are you using? Are you checking out to AXF or shapefile? Do you utilize domains? Do you utilize relationship classes? How many layers do you have in your map document? What mobile device are you using? We will need to try and narrow down where the issue may be coming from.

Mike, As a support analyst, I'm not too up to date on the procedures for purchasing new software. I went to the website and experienced the same behavior that you did. I'd recommend just giving customer service a call. They will be able to either help you get it online, help you purchase it over the phone, or can direct you to the right representative who can help you get the software. As you said you have the evaluation version (newest version is 10.0.2) all you'll need then is a registration number. You find that after you enter the registration number on the evaluation version, it will unlock the full version. The only actual limitation of the evaluation version is that it only runs for 20 mins at a time. You can reach customer service @ 888-377-4575 option 5. Good luck!

The GPS point used as an offset reference point is not averaged, it utilizes the next string it receives. Even if you have averaging enabled for normal vertices you take, that will not be taken into consideration on the offset. Out of curiosity, do you have a link for the hot fix you received from Trimble or did they send it to you directly?

Mike, I haven't received a good explanation as to why they didn't deliver the ability to utilize NMEA as they have in all of their previous mobile products. It was a surprise to me when the 6000 was released. You should be able to purchase the upgrade through the Trimble reseller that you bought the device from. If you bought it in a bundle from Esri, I would imagine that you would need to contact the account manager that set you up with the bundle. If you contact the person that you bought the bundle from and/or your customer service rep they should be able to help you out. You don't have to use NMEA to connect to ArcPad, I should have been more specific before. You can utilize the Trimble GPScorrect protocol with the GNSS serial port (COM3) to obtain a signal in ArcPad. NMEA Protocol: NMEA 0183 Port: COM2 NMEA Serial Port Baud: 4800 GPScorrect Protocol: Trimble GPScorrect Port: COM3 GNSS Serial Port Baud: 9600 Thanks.

Update: This issue has been logged as a software defect. The ArcPad team will be looking into.. (a) The issue where existing features with NULL values automatically have their boxes checked on, instead of null. and (b) the allowsnull attribute of the layer definition getting removed each time the edit form is opened. For the time being, you must utilize the workflow I included with my previous post (6/23) in order to cause the check boxes of existing features with null attributes to be unchecked when you open the feature properties.

1. Open the axf in ArcPad Studio. 2. In the tree under "Feature Layers" right-click on the feature class. 3. Select "Show Data" You will be able to see the AXF_STATUS field on the right-hand side of the list of fields. 4. To modify the current value, remove the SQL statement that's in the top box already and replace it with the following: UPDATE TABLENAME SET AXF_STATUS='1' WHERE AXF_OBJECTID >= 2 The "TABLENAME" is the name of your feature class, but in all upper-case letters. The WHERE clause can be utilized to only change a portion of your data. If you wanted to change the value for every row in the feature class, just utilize the first two lines. 3. After you have the modified SQL statement, click the red exclamation mark button on the main toolbar to run the statement. The following messages should be returned if you have written a valid SQL statement: Command completed with # rows affected. Command completed successfully. After this you should be able to close the command window, right-click the feature class again, and select "Show data". You will now see that the value has changed for the records you specified. You can then check this data back into ArcMap. Hope this helps.

Mike, Did you purchase the optional NMEA upgrade from Trimble? The 6000 series device doesn't output NMEA by default without the upgrade. If you did purchase the upgrade, did you activate it? Activation for the NMEA upgrade is a little more challenging than the Floodlight technology, as you need to obtain an .xml file (which ties the NMEA upgrade to the specific serial number of your device) from Trimble which you then must point to on your device during the activation process. If you did purchase the upgrade and it is activated, have you enabled NMEA output through the GPS Controller? GPS Controller > Setup > GNSS Settings > NMEA Output > On The new 6000 series device is a tricky one to get setup correctly. Reply here if you have any additional questions.

Update: I've been looking into this a little further and have some additional insight. For those of you who say that the False value is not working, is it not working for a brand new feature you create or is it not working when you open the feature properties for an existing feature? If you've set True and False default values for a checkbox control these will be honored when you create a new feature in ArcPad. If you have existing features in your document with NULL values in those fields (perhaps you checked out data from ArcMap and those features didn't have any True or False value already listed) they will all have their checkbox controls set to True (checked on) if you open their feature properties. This goes for shapefiles with empty cells and axf files which have actual NULL values. So. If I modify a feature which doesn't have a True or False value in it already, why am I forced to choose between True or False? Why can't I keep it as a NULL value? Starting with ArcPad 7.1, checkbox controls allow for a "3 state control". You can modify these controls to take values of True, False, or NULL. By default, these checkbox controls are a 2 state control (True or False, no NULL values). This can be modified in ArcPad Studio by adding the allownulls=True attribute to the checkbox control. Here's the catch: For some reason (we'll find that out, possibly bug) the CHECKBOX control doesn't think that the allownulls attribute can be used. However, it can be. If you look in the Customizing ArcPad help doc and look at the CHECKBOX control properties you'll see that the allownulls attribute is not listed under the Attribute Descriptions for CHECKBOX. The workaround is to manually add the allownulls attribute to the checkbox control through the tree view of the layer definition. Here's the biggest catch: Because the checkbox control doesn't think it can use the allownulls attribute, if you actually open up the EDITFORM for that particular layer it will wipe out all of the allownulls attributes that you've added to your checkbox controls. So yes, the allownulls attribute works properly as long as you don't open the EDITFORM after you've made the modification. After you've set all of the checkboxes to be a 3 state control (by adding the allownulls=True attribute) when you open the feature properties of an existing feature (which has NULL values in the checkbox fields) the box will be checked on but grayed out. A grayed out checkbox means that a NULL value will be entered. You can then cycle through all three options. Attached is a screenshot of a checkbox control with this attribute added. You would right-click on the <CHECKBOX> control and select "Add Attribute". The Name will be allownulls and the Value will be True. Remember, after making this modification, don't open the EDITFORM! - More info to follow -

In regards to post processing data collected via a laser rangefinder: I spoke with a Trimble support rep a few months back regarding rangefinders. There is/was an issue floating around out there in regards to checking in offset data with GPS Analyst taken with a rangefinder. It would always assume the unit of meters. So if your coordinate system was in feet, it would act as if those units were meters, thus skewing the data. At the time when I was speaking with Trimble about that issue, I posed the question about whether or not you can post process offset data collected with a rangefinder, as I was questioning how it would handle 2 point offsets and such where every point doesn't utilize the GPS as a reference point. Trimble responded and said that all offsets require their own GPS reference point in order to be properly post processed. One point offsets using the GPS as the reference point will properly post process. Multi-point offsets (like a 2 point offset) cannot be post processed even if they utilize a GPS position as the initial reference point. Hope this helps.

Nice work narrowing that down. Most of the time, ArcPad related crashes and issues are data specific. For those problematic shapefiles, you can try a few things. 1. Import the shapefile into a geodatabase. Does the feature class cause ArcPad to crash if you check out for ArcPad? 2. Export that feature class back out to a shapefile. Does this new shapefile cause ArcPad to crash? 3. Run Check / Repair Geometry on your problematic shapefiles. ArcToolbox > Data Management Tools > Features > Check Geometry / Repair Geometry Sometimes the steps above will get you a shapefile which works properly. Thanks.

David, This process should work regardless of if you are utilizing an axf file or a shapefile with an associated .apl layer definition file. I've attached screenshots of the apl file. I've also attached a zip file containing a test shapefile and .apl file. My guess is that you've got something going on with your data. I would create a new shapefile and test with it to see if the behavior is any different. Look over the attached files, perhaps you will be able to determine what's going wrong with yours.

I'm surprised that you are having difficulty changing this as you should be able to tell ArcPad whether the box should be checked or not via the default value. Check box controls should be used on text fields, as the values of True and False get recorded to the attribute table. The default value can be changed either via the control properties or by navigating the tree structure of the layer definition. I've included screenshots of both of these locations. You should type the words True and False in as shown here. Do not put them between double quotes, such as "True". After you've gone back and made sure that your axf looks like the screenshots I've provided are you still seeing that the check boxes are checked on by default? Thanks.

Nathan, That behavior seems pretty strange. Three questions for you: 1. If someone logs into the machine with a separate user profile does the crash occur? 2. If you open a blank map in ArcPad, save it and close, does ArcPad crash? 3. If you rename the My ArcPad folder within the My Documents folder, does ArcPad crash when you exit? Rename "My ArcPad" to "My ArcPadOld", or something along those lines. Windows 7 C:\Users\<UserProfile>\Documents\My ArcPad Windows XP C:\Documents and Settings\<UserProfile>\My Documents\My ArcPad Depending on the results of those tests we may be able to make a better determination as to why the crash is occurring for you.

I've recently heard back from Trimble Support regarding this issue. This is an issue that their development team is aware of and they are actively attempting to resolve it. Unfortunately, until action is taken from Trimble, check in's from the GPS Analyst toolbar will not automatically copy the pictures over. You will need to manually do this yourself and add an appropriate hyperlink. Thanks.

Jason, Are you checking out the data and storing the check out folder on a network location? If you are, if you save the check out to your local machine does the folder get properly created? There was an issue with this in an earlier release of ArcPad 10. Please install ArcPad 10 SP2 (10.0.2) and see if the issue is still present. Thanks.
