Nathan, If you were working with a registered copy of ArcPad 10 prior to v10.0.2 I'm surprised that you're running into this issue. ArcPad Studio requires that you register ArcPad before it can be used. You can evaluate ArcPad, but not ArcPad Studio. The reason that it asks if you want to open ArcPad is so you can enter the registration number. Opening ArcPad without registering wouldn't do you any good. Does ArcPad open in evaluation mode or is it fully registered? Check your registry to verify that you've properly entered the reg code: Start > run > regedit HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > ESRI > ArcPad > 10.0 > SerialNumber Do you have a registration number listed here? The version 10 number should contain the letter "D" in the middle of it. If you do, there shouldn't be any reason why you can't open ArcPad Studio. If you don't have a registration number here open ArcPad and enter your registration number when prompted. If you don't remember your number, a quick call to customer service should clear that up. If you DO have a valid registration number here, something fishy is going on. If that is the case, here's what I would recommend: Inside the Software folder of the HKEY_CURRENT_USER hive you'll find that ESRI folder. Right-click it and rename it to ESRI_old. Fire up ArcPad and you will be prompted for your registration number again. Enter it, and you should be able to start up ArcPad Studio. If the above doesn't work try a repair of your installation. If that doesn't work, try a full uninstall / reinstall (which really shouldn't be necessary). If you still can't open ArcPad Studio after all of this, reply here with the steps you've tried and we'll go from there.

Josue, This is a known issue in ArcPad 7.1 which is documented in the following KB article: Error: PrjData.dll not found. Projection and datum transforms may not operate correctly. http://support.esri.com/en/knowledgebase/techarticles/detail/34210 The workarounds would be as follows: 1. Modify the System Files Path in the ArcPad Options > Paths dialog box to display C:\Program Files\ArcPad 7.1\System (Tools > Options > Paths > System Files Path) or.. 2. Delete the ArcPadPrefs.apx in My Documents before opening ArcPad 7.1 for the first time. (Or rename the current ArcPadPrefs.apx file to ArcPadPrefs_old.apx). Hope this helps!

Jason, Currently this bug has a planned resolution set for ArcPad 10.1. At this point in time it doesn't look like a fix we be available before then. CQ00312474: Fields for external list values only show on XP machines (not on Win7/Vista) If you are current on maintenance, feel free to give support a call down the road if you would like to know the current status of this bug. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Jason, I assume that you're referring to blank drop down lists that appear next to "Values Field" and "Text Field" in the List Values tab of the Control Properties. Is that correct? If this is the case it is a known software defect between ArcPad and the Windows Vista / 7 OS. In Windows 7, you will not receive populated drop down lists of fields in the List Values tab. Until the bug is resolved you'll need to install ArcPad on a Windows XP machine to pick these values. You could do all of your work via Windows 7 and utilize XP only for setting these fields. By the way, I've always used dbase IV for the creation of pick lists in ArcPad. Let me know if I didn't fully understand your question.

Gary, You should not have any problem editing (or subsequently checking in) AXF files in ArcPad 7.1.1 which were checked out using ArcPad 10. Please keep in mind, however, that starting at ArcGIS 10 you can no longer check out feature classes to shapefile format (if it is to be checked back in). You must utilize data checked out to AXF for disconnected editing.

Matt, You're work flow is good. I recommend that ArcPad users manually copy and paste the folder containing the axf file to and from the mobile device. I tend to stray away from using a "sync" folder to automatically push data to and from a folder on the mobile device. Much better just to do it manually - that way you don't accidentally overwrite any of the data. You should be able to save multiple axf files and then check them back in at another time. I'm not too sure what may have happened to your particular file. Although it's rare that an axf file becomes corrupt, it's possible. Open the problematic axf file in ArcPad Studio. Underneath "Feature Layers" right-click on the feature class which you've been editing. Select "Show Data". Does any data get displayed? Do you see a SQL error message of some type? If you see all of your data here in tabular form, go ahead and export it to a shapefile by right-clicking the feature class underneath "Feature Layers" and selecting "Export". At least you can manually append the data if it exports appropriately. Do both axf files you have right now exhibit this behavior? Did you move the location of the geodatabase since the last time you checked in? If you did, you need to move it back to the location that it was when the export was created. This is the file path you see next to "workspace" in the Get Data From ArcPad wizard. If a newly exported axf works appropriately, we'll have to assume that something happened to the problematic file. If a new export doesn't work, it's probably a data issue of some sort. At this point: Try exporting to axf from ArcPad Studio. Try exporting a new axf file and see if that one works.

I'm not sure I'm following you 100%, but I'll give it a shot. The work flow you're trying to use should be possible. 1. When you say that the "Get Data For ArcPad" buttons don't show up, is it that they're missing completely or are the icons grayed out? The GPS Analyst toolbar v2.3 does not contain "Get Data For ArcPad" buttons like you would see on the ArcPad Data Manager toolbar. To check in and out you must utilize the two AXF buttons on the right side of the toolbar. When you hover over them they say "Get Data For ArcPad" and "Check in ArcPad AXF file and GPScorrect SSF". These are essentially the same tools as you would see on the ArcPad Data Manager toolbar, except the check in process checks in the SSF to the geodatabase as well. The ArcPad toolbar (the short three-icon toolbar) was deprecated at version 10. Because of this, in ArcMap 10 you can no longer check out to shapefile as you could at version 9.3.1. You must check the data out to axf for disconnected editing (which is the functionality that the ArcPad Data Manager toolbar utilizes). 2. If the buttons are grayed out, make sure that you've checked on both the ArcPad Data Manager and Trimble GPS Analyst extensions in the Customize Menu > Extensions list. Hope this helps.

You would need to install ArcPad on the desktop to gain access to those tools. When you purchased the mobile units with ArcPad on them, I assume you purchased individual licenses for each of them, correct? The ArcPad license agreement says that if you purchase a license of ArcPad it can be used on one mobile device and one desktop machine. If this is the case, you can locate their registration numbers by opening ArcPad and going to Help > About ArcPad (blue and white question mark icon). You will find the registration number here (contains a "D" in the middle if version 10) and can enter it in when you install ArcPad. If you don't have the installation media you can utilize the evaluation version of ArcPad 10 SP2 from the following site (becomes a fully activated version after registration): http://www.esri.com/software/arcgis/arcpad/evaluate.html For older versions of ArcPad look here: http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=listPatches&PID=26 As long as you stick with one registration number per mobile unit / desktop you'll be just fine.

I just tested this and it seems to work just fine. I set a definition query in ArcMap which resulted in 225 out of 1000 features to display. Only these 225 features were exported to ArcPad. I'm running ArcGIS Desktop 10 SP2 (build 3200) and ArcPad 10.0.2. I tested by checking out axf (disconnected editing), axf (background), and shapefile. All worked as expected. You say you've tried different data, but I would recommend creating a brand new geodatabase and feature class. Create a few features which you can set a def query on. Then check out and see what happens. Out of curiosity, do you have multiple instances of the same feature class in your map document? As in, the same feature class in the map several times but symbolized in different ways?

Off the top of my head I'm not sure how you would do this through code. There is, however, a Repeat Attributes tool which you can use to repeat ALL of the attributes from the previously created feature. I'm not sure if having all of the attributes come over is acceptable or not, but I thought I'd make you aware of the tool. Creating repeated features http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#//00s1000000r5000000.htm In ArcPad 10, while in Design Mode, you can add the Repeat Attributes button to any toolbar, making it easy to quickly access. Working in Design Mode http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#/Working_in_Design_Mode/00s10000012z000000/ Another choice you would have is to set a default value for that field either in ArcMap before you check it out, or via Studio after the AXF has been created. Then the default value will automatically populate the field crew info for each new point. Additionally, you could think about utilizing templates in ArcPad 10. Each field crew could have it's own template, with a default value already set. What are Quick Project Templates? http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#//00s1000000w3000000.htm Creating QuickProject Templates http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcpad/10.0/help/index.html#//00s1000000w4000000.htm Hope this helps.

Unfortunately, you can not have two different versions of ArcPad installed at the same time. You will have to uninstall ArcPad 8 in order to install ArcPad 10. You can, however, utilize checkouts from either version. If you check out with ArcPad 10 you should be able to consume that data with ArcPad 8 (and visa versa). You'll have to install ArcPad 8 and 10 on different machines if you want to move forward with both versions. Only one version per mobile device as well.
