Thank you James! It is good to know that is a setting, and that there is a viable workaround.

Update - it looks like "sourceSchemaChangesAllowed" dictates whether the view layer is able to change the schema, not whether the view layer locks the schema from being changed by Survey123 Connect. Still totally at a loss here. Deleting all views layers and maps referencing the service allowed me to republish with new fields, but it's not something we want to do again. I would really appreciate a workaround here.

The Feature: I was looking through David Nyenhuis 's blog post, Operations Dashboard: Provide Context to Your Dashboard Indicators, and I noticed that he quietly used an interesting feature in the second step of his second example. Specifically, he set his bottom text to {difference} from last year ({percentChange}%). At first I assumed {difference} and {percentChange} were fields in his feature service, but then I got curious and tried them in my data. Lo and behold, they calculated the difference and percent change in my data! I did some digging and found this help page that explains: Indicator—Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS | ArcGIS. You can calculate difference, absolute difference, percentage, percentage change, ratio and ratio change. All of these relate your {value} to field to your {reference} field, but you have some flexibility in what these fields are, including combining different filters on each. You can also combine the results of your calculations with text, which is what David does in his examples. In use: Here's what some of my indicators looked like beforehand: These compared the number of unacceptable ramps to the total ramps underneath. It could have been made more clear by adding more text, but it still wouldn't have been as intuitive as the percentages we're used to seeing. Here's what it looks like with a percentage: Much more intuitive! No the percent is displayed clearly, and the number of assets that are unacceptable is displayed below for context. This is much more intuitive, and since the total number of ramps is displayed elsewhere on the dashboard, it's less repetitive. Great, but why so many decimals? That's the default, but you can easily format to get rid of the decimals. Here's what that setting looks like: You can find more on number formatting here: Format numbers—Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS | ArcGIS. The Takeaway: Differences, percentages, and ratios are powerful ways of representing your data. They're often more intuitive than just showing numbers, and allow your dashboard user to quickly take in information. Furthermore, they can be used to give context to numeric data. These features have been hiding in plain sight. All the information is right there in the help guide, but it doesn't come up in the top results on either Google searches or the help search bar. Hopefully this blog can help users find the information more quickly, or at least inspire some one to read the help documentation a little closer.

This question is from 2013, so you probably don't still need help, but it's the first to come up on Google when you search for this so I figure it will help someone. You can show percentage in an indicator by setting your numerator - in this case inoperable inspections - to your value field, and your denominator - in this case all inspections - to your reference field. Then in your text boxes, you can display the percent by clicking "Fields: {}" and choosing 100 * Value / Reference - {percentage}. There's more information on this at Indicator—Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS | ArcGIS, including an explanation of all the other calculations that you can use within an indicator. Your percentages may show up with a lot of decimals, and you can format those by following this help: Format numbers—Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS | ArcGIS. I hope this can help someone else who was looking for this functionality! Andrew Hargreaves Tif Pun #ops dashboard #operationsdashboard #percent #indicator widget

Thanks Michelle! I haven't gotten a chance to boat down the river yet. I mainly do a little-known sport called highlining, so I spent a lot of my time up on top of the cliffs - or at Summersville Lake. You're lucky to live in WV!

I don't have a current use case for this, but wanted to support James Dickens idea. This seems like a pretty important feature for a dashboard that may be alerting monitors to take real-time action. The Ops Dashboard help for "Effective Dashboards" says "increase your organization's responsiveness by configuring the dashboard so that users are immediately notified when something occurs that requires action" - audio alerts would certainly help this. Author effective dashboards—Operations Dashboard for ArcGIS | ArcGIS I would add that flashing elements would help also.

Where do you work and what is your role? My name is Philip, and I work as a GIS Technician at a local engineering firm based in Richmond, Va. I do a lot in data collection and maintenance, and in the setup for those efforts. I often serve as Technical Lead for projects. What GIS success have you had this year and what product did you use? My major successes in the past year have been in helping design collection methods - either workflows in custom AGOL apps or surveys in Survey123. These were both in large, statewide ADA compliance surveys where the existing collection methods were slow and unwieldy, and the updated workflows were able to save hundreds of hours from the process. What is your expertise (GIS related or not), and how can that help the community? Most of my work has been in utility collection and data maintenance. I specialize in developing efficient workflows for collection and maintenance, and finding creative solutions to technical issues. My knowledge in both technical issues and on-the-ground field collection make this possible. I often head to GeoNet when I reach a roadblock during a project to look for existing solutions, and I hope to share my experiences back with the community. Favourite Location 38.053224, -81.059575

After doing more digging, it looks like the service definition has the properties "sourceSchemaChangesAllowed" : false and "hasViews": true. I'm not sure if those are related, but would it cause issues to set "sourceSchemaChangesAllowed" : true? There is no way to click it on or off, so it would be something of a 'crack'

Hello, My team has created a large Survey123 form which I am the owner/publisher of. We have created various view layers associated with the data from the form, and are currently in the processing of making an Operations Dashboard for the data. We would like to add 5 calculations to the feature service to help our reporting in the dashboard. The issue is I cannot publish the updated survey with the new fields. I get the usual warning about adding fields, but then the "Error 400: Unable to add feature service layer definition" when I hit "Publish Survey." I have attached screenshots of the warning and the error. I am able to publish the same form as a new survey, so I know I don't have duplicate or improper field names. The issue is republishing the survey would mean redoing a lot of work creating the views and dashboard. Another user who had this issue last month said deleting the view layers associated with the data fixed this publishing error. Is it true that the views we have created could be "locking" the feature service schema from changing? If so, is there a workaround? And if not, what else could be the issue here? Thanks for your help, Philip

Delaere Mickael was the view you deleted the only view associated with your form? I'm receiving the same error while publishing, and suspect the associated views are the issue. Unfortunately, we have created multiple views and maps associated with our form, and so removing all views would be a large burden just to add a couple of fields.

Very nice post, thanks! I had been using this feature as a way to check the value of hidden calculations while developing surveys, but it hadn't occurred to me to use it in the survey itself.
