I have opened a support case. In the meantime I have observed that it does not happen consistently but is probably related to having used several instances of ArcGIS Pro open. Still, since the paths are shown as absolute paths, I expect them to behave as such. I will update, when the support comes back.

@TomBole Maybe you have seen that I posted a second problem yesterday, where working manually is the solution. This makes it really complicated to work with ArcGIS Pro. I have tried with opening support casesbefore, but they are very time consuming, so it would be easier, if esri employees, who have already seen thequestion in the community, could suggest it for a support case.

@DanPattersonExactly, I expect it to refer to exactly the same data as in the original aprx, which it doesn't. And that is exactly the problem. It invents path-combinations that do not exist. Manually saving a Copy keeps tha paths correctly.

Now in 3.1.1 I can only find it in the menu, not via right click. But it saved my day, to know that I have to search on map level and not for the whole project.

I have a script, where I prepare the maps and then save a copy to do some finetuning which would be to complicated for scripting. During the export the paths get destroyed. I use shapefiles because it is the easiest format to access from R or excel. Project file: Drive\somepath \project_folder\map_path\mapx.aprx Some data in the map: Drive\somepath \project_folder\report_path\some_data.shp or Drive\somepath \project_folder\map_path\more_data.shp Home location: Drive\somepath \project_folder New location: Drive\somepath\project_folder\report_path\mapy.aprx Saving a copy manually works, when saving in python with aprx.saveACopy() the paths get totally messed up: e.g. the data becomes: Drive\somepath \report_path\some_data.shp or Drive\somepath \map_path\more_data.shp, i.e. the project_folder got removed from the path. Data outside the project can also get some weird path, adding \somepath in front of the original path: Data from Drive\otherpath \other_data.shp becomes Drive\somepath\otherpath \other_data.shp Anybody else who has experienced this? Is there a way to avoid this?

Luckily exporting with arcpy did the trick. But still, it feels like I cannot rely on ArcGIS any more, if I have to check every layout element.

I have recently problems with the legend. In one situation, I changed the symbology labels manually. The changes showed there, but only partly in the TOC and the legend. So as a solution, I changed the text directly in the TOC. Sometimes I also have problems, that the legend changes in the exported version (differently in different attempts). What are the possible reasons? could it be connected to special characters from languages or the "<", ">"? Or could a re-installation of ArcGIS Pro help? In the screenshot the bottom is the ArcGIS Pro project, the top 2 are 2 jpgs with exactly the same export settings. The map is OK.

Yes, packages are, but that means that you save the data as well, or is there an option to leave the data, where they are? E.g. If you use data from a central data collection?

It looks like you can't give votes for earlier comments, but I would support the option to turn them off for an account.

I have an ArcGIS Pro project with a finished layout. I realised that I have to overwrite on of the layers of the map with a spatial join. When you overwrite a layer in ArcGIS Pro, it typically gets first removed and then re-added which will remove symbology and legend order. So I did that in a different map in the same project and it still removed the layer from the map that I use in the final layout. Is there a way to avoid it in arcpy? I will have to update the layer again and would like to keep the data analysis script and the layout script in one project.

@RhettZufeltWhat version are you working in? It is interesting to know that removing the labelClasses does not destroy the lyrx, but unfortunately it does not work on my computer(pro 3.1.1). I can import symbology, but labels don't show when activated, and now double clicking on the field names in the label properties has no effect any more. So at the moment I simply have the layer two times, one time without symbols and only labels and the second with the imported symbology. In future I will try to script the symbology instead of importing it.

The manuel editing of the lyrx file did not help. Now an existing column name is pre-selected, but no labels showing. the symbology shows as expected. If I change the labeling to another column name from the list, I get the same error as in the original post. When I apply labels before importing the symbology, everything works.

The question has 2 parts: In ArcGIS Pro, If you import symbology from a layer that has labeling activated, the labeling gets imported as well. I have not found an option to define a new labeling field. I use the value field for defining the field for the symbology (side question: why do I need to define the original field manually? this should be part of the layer definition and can be difficult to remember.) Is there a similar way to define the label field name or not to import the labeling? In my current project, after importing the symbology, the labeling expression contains a field that does not exist. When I try to set it to an existing field (by double clicking on the fieldname in the field list) I get the error "Invalid Expression. No features found.". I am stuck there, no matter if I apply, cancel, deactivate-reactivate labeling. Any ideas? my own workaround will be, to open the lyr-file in an editor and try to change the labeling field manually.

It is so frustrating, I think ArcMap started that way as well and added the option to save older versions later. I would think that it is obvious that working together with different versions is needed.
