I still don't see how having editability defaulted to off is a solution (see comments above). The real question is, do you need multiple people to be editing the same feature classes simultaneously (concurrently)? Depending on your organizational editing requirements, it doesn't really matter whether layers default to on or off.

If you use domains you can't use shapefiles. There are many limitations to using shapefiles: Geoprocessing considerations for shapefile output—Appendices | ArcGIS Desktop The real question is, do you need multiple people to be editing the same feature classes simultaneously (concurrently)? If so, file geodatabase doesn't support that. But if you just need different people to be editing different feature classes (either standalone, or in different feature datasets, noting from the help sent previously that file geodatabases lock at the feature dataset level) in the same file geodatabase at the same time, you could probably make that work, it would just take some organizational rule-making as to who edits what and when.

OK, thanks, Sarah. You'll need to send the analyst the .dmp files associated with the crash (see comments above in the thread for how to find those). It might also be worth checking your graphics card driver to ensure it is up to date. EDIT: I also should have noted that as a troubleshooting measure, try switch the rendering engine over to OpenGL to see if it alleviates the crash. This may be an indicator that the graphics card/drivers need attention.

Is the concern that one user working in a project containing layers from the project geodatabase will automatically be locking out other users from editing just because the layers are editable by default? Because if a user isn't actively making edits, there are no locks on the data. By default, the data is editable, but not locking other users from editing. Now, if user A starts editing layer A on one machine, and user B tries to edit layer A (coming from the same project geodatabase) on a different machine, yes, the data will be locked (as it should be, and as it would be if you were in the same scenario in ArcMap). But just because user A has the project open containing layer A and layer A is editable, that alone doesn't prevent user B from editing. Once user B starts editing layer A, a lock is placed on the datasource and user A wouldn't be able to edit until the lock is removed. See: File geodatabases and locking—Manage file geodatabases | ArcGIS Desktop Given that, how do you manage editing in ArcMap where you have multiple editors trying to edit in the same file gdb at the same time? If there really is a need for multiple editors editing the same datasource at the same time, then file gdb isn't the right solution.

Dave, now that you know about the autosave editing options, and have up voted the idea about autosave for the project (which is Under Consideration by the development teams involved) I want to get back to the reason you're asking. Unfortunately it sounds like you're requesting this because Pro is crashing. We apologize for that and are always working to improve stability. While nobody wants the application to crash, if it does, please be sure to always include a valid email address and description of what you were doing when it occurred. This can be very helpful in getting things fixed. More here ArcGIS Desktop Error Reporter Learns Its Manners Save early, save often! Cheers

This functionality was introduced with Pro 2.3 so since you say you're on 2.2.4 I don't think it is expected to work. I'm more curious about you not being able to authorize Pro 2.3. What license type are you using - I'm assuming either Named User or Concurrent Use because you mention borrowing? If Concurrent Use, note you'll need to update the license manager to 2018.1 to serve licenses to Pro 2.3: Authorize ArcGIS Pro with a Concurrent Use license—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop

Thanks, Calvin. It is good to know that that seems to be working for now. I'll pass your answer along to the development team so that they can put in a fix for a future release. Thanks again.
