Hello Tom, I have a sneaking suspicion that your extensions are still working - you just need to stop them from being 'DELAY LOADED'. Delay loading of extensions is used to save memory - ArcPad recognizes when you might need to use an extension and will only load it at that time instead of during start-up. Open up your Advanced Settings Page and take a look at the Extensions Tab. There are columns called 'loaded' and 'delayable'. I am thinking that your extensions say 'loaded - no' and 'delayable - yes'. This means that your extension is waiting to be loaded into memory until ArcPad thinks you need it. You can force an extension to load by executing the following script. Press ctrl + Enter in ArcPad to open a script window and then type in the following (where CODE is the 4 character code for your extension as listed on the Extensions Tab): msgbox extensions("CODE").version Select the exclamation point to execute the code and see the version number displayed in the message box. By requesting the version number, we will have forced ArcPad to load our extension, so open up your Extensions Tab again to see if the extension has loaded. If it has - there is a super-easy way to remove delay loading from your extension by editing the ExtensionPrefs.apx file. Your ExtensionPrefs.apx (in your 'My ArcPad' Folder) has delay loading for all extensions set to TRUE. However, we can override this for any extension by adding the delayload attribute to your extension. Open ExtensionPrefs.apx in ArcPad Studio and right-click on your extension to select 'Add Attribute'. Enter 'delayload' as the name and the value as 'false'. This should load your extension into ArcPad on startup!! Please let me know if this works... Hannah 🙂

Hello Ammar, There are only a couple of reasons I can think of why an AXF would work on your desktop computer and not on your Windows Mobile Device... 1 - Size: Because Windows Mobile Devices are nowhere near as powerful as your desktop computer, if you have created an exceptionally large AXF, Windows Mobile Devices will not have the resources available to handle really large amounts of data. You may need to look at restricting the extent of your dataset or reduce the number of layers in your AXF to make your project more mobile. 2 - Corrupt Files: Could your AXF have been corrupted when it was transferred from your desktop computer to your Windows Mobile Device? What method did you use to transfer your files? Did you create a .CAB during Check-Out? Did you use an SD Card to copy the files? If you are experienced with ArcPad, you could open your AXF in ArcPad Studio and take a sneaky peek at the XML for anything out of the ordinary 🙂 Let me know if this helps, Hannah

Hi, For a raster to be used in ArcPad they must comply to the following conditions for geo-referencing and projection information: Raster files must have associated georeferencing information. This georeferencing information includes the size of the pixels, as well as the coordinate position of the reference pixel. The georeferencing information can be stored in three locations: Within the header section of the image, such as with GeoTIFF or MrSID images. Within an associated Auxilliary (.aux) file, such as created by ArcGIS. Within an associated world file. All raster files must have either a world file or an AUX file, with the exception of GeoTIFF and MrSID images. When adding a raster layer to an ArcPad map, ArcPad first looks in the image header for the georeferencing information, then in the associated .aux file (if present), then within an associated world file (if present). Raster files must also have associated projection information. This projection information enables ArcPad to correctly position the image on a map with a defined projection, or coordinate system. The projection information can be stored in three locations: Within the header section of the image, such as with GeoTIFF images. Within an associated Auxilliary (.aux) file, such as created by ArcGIS. Within an associated map projection file (*.prj). When adding a raster layer to an ArcPad map, ArcPad first looks in the image header for the projection information, then in the associated .aux file (if present), then within an associated projection file (if present). This may be the reason for your problems. Also remember that it is only ArcGIS Online layers that are able to be reprojected on the fly in ArcPad - all other data MUST be in the same projection. I hope this helps, Hannah

Hi Guys, There are so many ways to better manage your device memory when working with ArcPad - but i would suggest the you read Blog 1 & Blog 2 first to get a better understanding about Windows Mobile and how your device uses/allocated memory. There are a variety of options that you can use to improve performance, but I would always recommend the removal of any extensions that are not being used in your project. All extensions are loaded during ArcPad start-up, consuming resources that could be available for your map. See here for more information. Some other areas to look at are your GPS Tracklog (try archiving your data), reducing the number of layers in your AXF (restrict to operational data only) and creating a local tile cache for background features (see here for details). There are many other ways to make your project more mobile and lightweight - but remember, you always have the option to run ArcPad on Windows 7 (there are some great rugged tablets on the market...) to avoid the memory restrictions imposed by Windows Mobile. Have you tried setting the default value on the FIELD instead of using the SUBTYPE DEFAULT?? Subtype defaults are not supported in the current version of ArcPad, but field defaults that the subtype is linked to are supported. The Dev Team is aware of this current limitation and recommend the use of field defaults as a workaround.... 🙂 Hannah

Hi Michael, A common issue that can trip up an ArcPad .axf check-in is when the NAME or LOCATION of the ORIGINAL GEODATABASE has been changed between check-out and check-in. Please make sure the original geodatabase is EXACTLY the same as when you performed your check-out. Hope this helps, Hannah

Hi Jason, Could you attach a copy of your .apm and raster layer so that we can have a go at reproducing this behavior?? My initial thoughts would be to check and double-check the projection information in the header of your raster. You may need to use a program like IrfanView to do this... Another option you may want to try in the meantime would be to add the layer to your map then use 'Save As' to save a new .apm Open the new and original .apm files in Notepad and copy the layer reference for your raster from the new .apm and paste that into your original .apm This should ensure that the datum information is not changed in your .apm but your raster has been included. Let me know how you get on, Hannah

Hi Sandra, If you have checked out your data from ArcMap using the ArcPad Data Manager, your project should already have a set of automatically generated Query Forms. These forms are the same as your Edit Forms, but are specifically used to search your data. On the Browse Toolbar (pointy hand on the globe) select the Find Tool (binoculars) to open your Query Forms. Here is an example from the Riverside Sample Dataset: From here I can enter the ID of the Poles Record I am searching for and tap OK to see my Results Tab: Now I can select my record and use the tools on the right-hand side to open the edit form, zoom to the record or navigate to the record. All without writing a single line of code (my favorite!!) For more info - check out this help article HTH Hannah Ferrier

Hi Johannes, You mentioned that you were using SHAPEFILES on your desktop?? I would recommend putting your data into a GEODATABASE to get the most functionality out of the ArcPad Data Manager. This will allow you to select the "Checkout all Geodatabase Layers" option when you use the 'Get Data for ArcPad' Tool on the ArcPad Data Manager Toolbar. That way you can edit your AXF in the field and then check your edits back into your geodatabase. To answer your other questions: 1. Check out the 'Quick Start Tutorial - Tree Inventory - Exercise 2' in the Customizing ArcPad Help for basic form customization including auto-incrementing fields on your forms. 2. I would recommend doing a check out/check in everyday to keep things simple. Make sure you discard your old check outs and use a new one each day to avoid confusion (and duplicates!). The AXF is only a temporary data store for your field data - Get your edits back into your project as soon as you can!! 3. Using a geodatabase should help your workflow!! Please let me know if you have any more questions... Hannah

The plot thickens... The only idea i can come up with without looking at your data would be to check if there is a filter or scale-dependency on your layers. This is assuming that when you create the axf there are no errors or warnings from the ArcPad Data Manager tools and that nothing looks squiffy in your .apm or .axf (use ArcPad Studio to take a closer look). This is not something you see in ArcPad every day! If you can contact Esri Support and let them troubleshoot your project, together you may be able to solve this mystery.

I will prefix this by saying that I DO NOT have one of these devices on hand - However: I have found with some other mobile devices that if you use the software on the device to turn on the GPS and then open ArcPad and use the binoculars to find the GPS it may work. Have you tried turning on the GPS BEFORE starting ArcPad?? HTH Hannah

Hi guys, There are lots of things you can do to tune the performance of ArcPad on your Mobile Device. One way is to look at your ArcPad Extensions. Switch off the extensions you are not using for your project. This may include un-installing Street Map. Also, you can look at further reducing the complexity of the data you take out into the field. Are you exporting background layers? Can your imagery be reduced to your work area? Are you only checking-out data relevant to your work area? Are you using cached basemap tiles? For more tips and tricks see the ArcPad Help. HTH Hannah
