For more on feature templates and definition queries, see this blog entry: http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2012/01/20/best-practices-for-using-layer-definition-queries-while-creating-features/ And for the enhancements to feature templates in ArcGIS 10.1, see the 10.1 beta help. 10.1 gives better feedback when templates are hidden (although it doesn't make any changes for you or update the default attribute value automatically): http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/What_s_new_for_editing/016w0000002v000000/

Also, make sure you have a feature template for the point layer you want to create in, and that the point layer is visible on the map.

There are a few options for how to group feature templates. In your case, you might try grouping by frequency, so the templates you use most often appear near the top of the window. Otherwise, there is not a way to list templates to match the drawing order in the table of contents. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Grouping_feature_templates_in_the_Create_Features_window/001t0000004t000000/

We've been seeing a lot of forum posts about this lately in relation to the Snapping toolbar, but it's strange that snapping stops working with classic snapping. Is it happening in the middle of an edit session where nothing has changed, or do you only notice it after reopening a map? In general, just make sure that classic snapping is still enabled, the snapping tolerance is reasonable, and that some layers and snap types are checked on in the Snapping Environment window. We'd like to look into this further. If you or anyone else experiencing this with either the Snapping toolbar or classic snapping could contact Esri Support or your local distributor with your scenario and data, it will help us isolate the problem. PS - The currently available ArcGIS 10 service pack is SP4 if you are able to upgrade to it, with SP5 due in summer.

Snapping does work in layout view, but only when you are working in a "focused" data frame. Double-click a data frame with the Select Elements tool to focus it, which basically makes the data frame, rather than the layout page, the target of your actions. You will see short diagonal lines around a data frame when it is focused. Otherwise, sometimes complex features may cause slow performance, even resulting in a near time-out of building the cache of features that are available for snapping. This might make it so you cannot snap to some features. We would like to look into this further. If anyone experiencing this could contact Esri Support or your local distributor with your scenario and data, it will help us isolate and fix the problem.

The green shading indicates that the field is being used to symbolize the layer. (There is currently no option to change the shading colors.) See the diagram in this help topic for more about the components of the Attributes window: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/About_editing_attributes/001t000000m1000000/ Symbology and other layer properties are utilized more in editing in ArcGIS 10 than in ArcGIS 9--for example, feature templates are based on the layer symbols. So, you see a window with the list of unique values symbols in it when you edit the contents of a field used to symbolize the layer. Fields with domains or subtypes that are not used for symbology show the regular drop-down. Make sure you have installed ArcGIS 10 service pack 4. This is the newest and includes all the previous service pack fixes, too. Your crash is a bug that was fixed in one of the service packs.

This was a beta problem and the extension should be included with all levels with the final release.

It sounds like there could be a problem with the shapefiles themselves, but it is odd that it works in ArcGIS 9.3 but not in 10. You might try importing them into a geodatabase and see if editing is successful. Otherwise, ensure that your ArcGIS 10 is updated (service pack 4 is the current release) in case there were any software issues that have been addressed. You should contact Esri Support or your local distributor, if outside the US, for better troubleshooting of your exact scenario and data and to enter a bug into the system, if needed.

Well, when working with shapefiles, make sure you have write-access to the folder in which they are stored and all the individual files (such as .shp, .dbf, etc.) that make up the shapefile. The settings you mentioned for versioned and non-versioned editing do not apply to shapefiles; they are only used with ArcSDE geodatabases. Also, try adding the shapefiles to a blank map document to see if there is something in the map that is causing this.

If you double-click a message in that window, it will open a help topic that provides more information and a solution, when available. Since you are working on a network location, make sure that you have write access to the directory and that no one else is using the data at the same time. Sometimes you will see the no editable layers error in conjunction with other messages that provide more detail about why you cannot edit. The message list appears to indicate (based on a translation guess) that the layers are in a basemap layer.

ArcScan is still technically implemented as an extension, which means that you need to install it during the ArcGIS 10.1 setup program and enable it in ArcMap on the Customize menu > Extensions to use it. I think ArcScan is included with Standard and Advanced licenses, but may not be available as a separate add-on purchase for Basic/ArcView. Check with Customer Service to clarify this for your organization. However, Maplex is entirely in the core product with all Desktop licenses (known as the Maplex Label Engine on the Labeling toolbar) and is not an extension. http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/What_s_new_for_text/016w00000054000000/

If your line layer has COGO attribute fields, two-point lines are created automatically in ArcGIS 10. Otherwise, you would need to split the lines at vertices (such as through the COGO toolbar or a geoprocessing tool).

Thanks, Nick. I am happy to report that these suggestions are part of ArcGIS 10.1. For example, you can move the toolbar farther away or you can dock it. Thanks to everyone for providing feedback. Here is the beta documentation for what's new in ArcGIS 10.1 (see the section on Feature Construction toolbar enhancements): http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#/What_s_new_for_editing/016w0000002v000000/ The Feature Construction toolbar is turned off by default and no longer appears automatically while sketching. However, you can display it temporarily if you want to access a command on it. When the toolbar is visible, you can move it and it retains its position relative to the sketch each time you click the map. This is helpful since the toolbar sometimes is positioned where you want to place the next vertex. If you want to display the Feature Construction toolbar only when you need it, you can press the TAB key to show it temporarily. For example, to create a parallel segment, press the TAB to display the Feature Construction toolbar, click Constrain Parallel, and close it or press TAB again to hide the toolbar. If you want the Feature Construction toolbar to appear anytime you are sketching, you need to enable it on the Editing Options dialog box. Click the Editor menu and click Options. On the General tab, check Show feature construction toolbar.
