I understand what you are saying about the benefits of the Object Loader and an edit session. The original bug ID is NIM039906, which does have a workaround listed of using the Append tool. In my quick test between tables with relationship classes, Append did at least complete successfully. If it does not work for you, you might drop a line to Esri Support so an analyst can help you find the optimal workflow for your data.

With ArcGIS 9.3, the Load Objects command used the target layer on the Editor toolbar as the destination into which the data will be loaded. This meant that you needed to set the target before you started the wizard, which made it likely that you could inadvertently load data into the wrong layer. Since the Editor toolbar was redesigned in ArcGIS 10 and there is no longer a target layer, the new panel you are seeing on the wizard allows you to set the target within the wizard itself. (This same thinking applies to other commands, such as Buffer on the Editor menu, where you now set the target within the command.) The location of the Load Objects command on the user interface has no effect on the target layer, so many people just put it on the Editor toolbar menu. The Load Objects command is not intended to be used to load data into tables; it is for feature classes only. It was actually a bug that it may have worked in a few cases in the past. You need to use the Simple Data Loader or an import geoprocessing tool in ArcMap to load data into a stand-alone table.

Glad you figured it out. The tutorial that comes with ArcGIS includes a section (exercise 1c) on the Organize Templates dialog box. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Introduction_to_the_Editing_tutorial/001t00000018000000/ And a blog entry: http://blogs.esri.com/Dev/blogs/arcgisdesktop/archive/2010/08/02/Using-feature-templates-effectively.aspx

It looks like the feature templates were created and then the symbology was changed to be unique values. That is generally why you see a template with a silver icon (rather than the actual symbol color) and the message that the symbol will not draw. Feature templates will automatically update if you make minor symbol edits, such as changing the color, but they will get out of sync with your layer if you change render types, such as going from single symbol to unique values. This is why it is a good idea to set up your symbols before you start editing. So, to create features for your unique value types, you should delete the old silver feature templates, then create new ones with your current unique values symbols. Click the Organize Templates button at the top of the Create Features window and click New Template to go through the wizard to make new templates. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Best_practices_for_using_feature_templates/001t0000004p000000/ http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Creating_new_feature_templates/001t0000004q000000/

Make sure you have installed ArcGIS 10 Service Pack 3. A bug that sounds like what you are experiencing was fixed in it. http://resources.arcgis.com/content/patches-and-service-packs?fa=viewPatch&PID=17&MetaID=1807 If this does not resolve it, please contact Esri Support so an analyst can work directly with you and your scenario.

Do you have a basemap layer (created either by Add Data > Add Basemap Layer or New Basemap Layer in the table of contents) in your map? We have found that sometimes large features in basemaps can cause snapping performance issues. If so, try turning off the basemap and seeing if snapping improves. Please contact Esri Support so an analyst can work with your data and help us resolve issues like this.

The upcoming release of ArcGIS 10.1 contains many new data alignment tools. If you are interested in testing the tools on your workflows, you should consider signing up for the 10.1 beta program at https://betacommunity.esri.com. In the meantime, keep trying what you are doing, as it will probably take a combination of manual and semi-automated tools to get the data to match. When building a geodatabase topology, be sure to set the roads as a rank of 1 and the other layers with a higher number to make it less likely that the roads will move. If you are using ArcGIS 10, you also might try some of new geoprocessing tools in the Editing toolbox, such as the Snap tool.

Also, when trying to cut out a hole, you should turn on Snap To Sketch on the Snapping toolbar menu. That will make sure your cutting line makes a complete ring inside the polygon. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Cutting_holes_in_existing_polygons/001t0000003q000000/

Yes, we can reproduce it at Esri. It is not fixed in beta 2, but will be addressed before the final release.

Thanks for testing. It does sound like it is most likely specific to Windows XP.

Xander - As Kevin mentioned, it would be good to know your operating system and any reproducible steps. By chance, are you using Windows XP? We are currently investigating an ArcMap crash that sometimes occurs when you open the help from a geoprocessing tool and then click links in the topic. So far, it seems to be only on Windows XP. If this is the same problem, we are working on a fix and will install it before the final release. Also, be sure to submit automatically any dump files that get generated (for this and any other crash you get!). Thanks, Dan. We are considering doing this for the future.

If you are using ArcGIS 10, another (manual) method to try is to use Right Angle on the palette of sketch construction types. See Right Angle in this help topic: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/Segment_construction_methods/001t00000057000000/ http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#/90_degrees_from_the_previous_segment_at_a_right_angle/001t00000065000000/

Thanks for your feedback. In the next release of ArcGIS, we are looking at making the Feature Construction toolbar more effective and easier to use. ArcGIS 10.1 is currently in beta, so I would encourage you to apply to join the beta program and let us know what you think: https://betacommunity.esri.com
