Yes, it is for visualization, and I could just create two lines as you suggest. It seems like it should be possible to offset two lines (one on either side of the original) and then connect the start points and end points to create a polygon though, which would be really nice. I am hoping someone else has done the scripting to make this happen and would be willing to share this, since I am not a developer.

Is there a way (has anyone written a script?) to create a new polygon by buffering both sides of a line in ArcPad? (An out-of-the-box Buffer Method is available for a Point Object, but not for a Line Object.)

Super bummer. I'd try a reinstall of ArcPad on the checkout computer and see if future checkouts have the same problem. And definitely open a case with Esri Support. I hope we never experience this problem, but I'd like to know what is going on so we can avoid it!

Did you try exporting features from the AXF to a shapefile via ArcPad Studio, to see if the data were actually saved in the AXF but are just not checking in? We have to do this about once a month, it seems, when something inexplicable goes wrong with an AXF. To date, the data have always been retrievable this way. We have sometimes been able to fix the problem by doing a reinstall of ArcPad on the desktop computer used to make the checkouts, as often the issue is something that goes wrong during the checkout process.

I was told several months ago by Esri Support that the user must wait 30 seconds before closing ArcPad to ensure the last edit (to the axf or to the apm) is saved. So I don't think the problem has been resolved, but there is a known work-around.

We had the opposite problem, which was that our local time was getting converted to UTC time during sync, and we reported this as an ArcPad 10.2.1 bug last year. Esri fixed this in ArcPad 10.2.2 by way of changes to ArcPad's sync.js file, but it sounds like the fix, which helps us, is not a good thing for your application. You could downgrade to ArcPad 10.2.1 to get the behavior you are requesting.

We just discovered that when we sync, the message alerting us to self-intersecting polygons displays in the sync report window on our mobile device, but the polygon is then apparently marked as checked in, so that we cannot identify the presence of an error back in the office unless the field staff informed us of problem so we know that we have to export the polygon from AXF to shapefile. Now that we've identified the problem, we have about 100 AXF files that we will have to open in ArcPad Studio, export the polygons as shapefiles, check for polygons that did not get added to our SDE dataset, and add these manually. Our AXF files are large and take several minutes to open, so this is going to be a time-consuming and tedious task. Is there any workaround or streamlining we could do to speed up this process?

I've been testing out this code to detect self-intersecting polygons in ArcPad, but I am getting inconsistent results including a LOT of false positives and some false negatives. I cannot figure out the pattern to the problem. This is based on the code here: How to determine if a polygon is self-intersecting using either ArcPad 8.0 or ArcMap 9.3.1? - Geographic Information Sys… Is the issue trying to test this in the office, rather than with real GPS-collected data? Sub CheckSelfIntersectingPolygon(objSH) Dim intJ, intI, objPart, objVertex, strVertexNo 'Initialize intJ intJ = 1 'Display information for each part of the feature For Each objPart in objSH.Parts 'MsgBox "Part " & intJ & " contains " & objPart.Count & " vertices.",vbOKOnly," Vertex Count" 'Initialize intI intI = 1 'Display information for each vertex in the current part For Each objVertex in objPart strVertexNo = "vertex(" & intI & ") " & objSH.isPointIn(objVertex) 'console.print strVertexNo if objSH.isPointIn(objVertex) = "True" then msgbox "This is a self intersecting polygon. You will need to recollect it." '& VBCr & strVertexNo exit sub end if 'Increment intI intI = intI + 1 Next 'Increment intJ intJ = intJ + 1 Next End Sub

We just got ArcPad sync working last week, and so far it is working properly in both directions. Did you check to make sure the Suppress Synchronization Downloads box is not checked in ArcPad Options on the Server tab?

Nope. But with some help from the ArcPad team I got instructions for how to do a definition query of the features that fail to check in, so that it is easier to find them and edit them in ArcPad. I do this by noting the OBJECTID of the features during the failed checkout, and then immediately opening ArcPad to edit the failed features. Then I got a SQL query from them that will change the status of the previously new feature, which was now edited and thus set as modified rather than new, back to new. For example, for our features (Poly_Spartina_14), the code would be: UPDATE POLY_SPARTINA_14 SET AXF_STATUS = 1 WHERE OBJECTID= 123456 This will update the modified record (code 2) and switch it back to a new record (code 1). Our other option is to export the failed features from axf to shp, edit them, and then bring them into our dataset. In this case, we have to change all domain fields that were left as blank in the axf back to null, since the shapefile converts them all to “ “ or “”. Both methods are relatively time-consuming, unfortunately, but I know of no automated way to fix tangled vertices.

Is there a way to create advanced feature level behavior in ArcPad? In other words, I want certain features to be on top of other features within the same feature layer, based on the attribute that determines their symbology. I am using shapefile checkouts, and can manipulate apl or vbs files if there is a way to accomplish what I'm after this way. I would prefer not to have to make changes to the Table Of Contents if at all possible, as this is more time-consuming given our high output workflow.

Hi Greg, Would you be willing to share your applet and apl code as examples to work off of? I am trying to do the same thing, and I find it so much easier to work off of other people's code that works than to try to start from scratch! Thanks! - Ingrid

I'm going to investigate whether it might be possible to create an ArcToolbox model to repair geometries prior to checkin, which is how we handled this before when dealing with shapefiles. I'll let you know what I find out. (It may take a few weeks, though!)

Hi Jim Did you ever get this resolved?? We have avoided the transition from shapefile checkouts (still available in ArcGIS 9.3.1) to axf checkouts for exactly this kind of issue (among others). But we are finally gearing up to upgrade to ArcGIS 10 and we need to resolve this exact issue. Your input would be VERY much appreciated! Ingrid
