Do you have ArcPad installed on your desktop PC, and can you open the files in ArcPad on your desktop PC?

Did you try adding the exact same imagery in ArcPad on your PC to see if it works there? I recently had to reduce the file size of some of my images by cutting them up into multiple, smaller images to get them to work in ArcPad. (These were tif, not MrSid, files.) I had the same experience on both my tablet and my desktop PC, and it occurred regardless of the .apm file I was using, so it was a good way to troubleshoot this problem and figure out what file size would or would not work.

Is it possible to programmatically change the extent of a sync-enabled ArcPad AXF (the xmin, ymin, xmax and ymax values within the AXF_SYNC_GEOMETRY property) via a custom python script or via SQL within ArcPad Studio? If so, can anyone advise on how to do this?

I feel your pain wrt ArcPad being phased out. I don't know if you're aware of this product, so I thought I'd let you know that I have my eye on AppStudio for ArcGIS. I hope it may become an option for smarter-than-Collector data collection in the future. Right now it seems mostly focused on data display, at least in terms of the out-of-the-box templates available.

And yes, all unaltered data would just remain unaltered.

The AXF records the data using the schema present during checkout. If you change the domain codes in ArcGIS between checkout and checkin, the checked in data will check in, but will be "invalid". You will have to manually edit the invalid data in ArcMap or using ArcToolbox models, etc.

The data should be stored as the codes (A, B, C), not as the descriptions. As long as you have not changed the codes, your data should still be valid, and the new descriptions should show up in ArcGIS following checkin. BTW, you can select and then Validate Features during an edit session following checkin to make sure all of your checked in data is valid...this will check that you don't have any non-domain values.

A follow-up question...is this post from 2010 still a recommended workflow for ArcPad 10.2.2 and ArcMap 10.3.1, and would this be a good alternative to try? The ArcPad Team Blog: Basemap Image Tiles for ArcPad 10

I've been using this @arcpaddevteam applet in ArcPad 10.2.2 on a desktop PC with plenty of disk space, and I am finding that it is not downloading the specified levels below the current level. I am using the ArcGIS Online WorldImagery. Has anyone else had this experience, and can anyone perhaps offer a fix? I would like to expand ArcPad Custom Tracklog Toolbar applet to allow synchronization of the resulting trackline (polyline) features, but I am getting stuck because our tracklines are and will always continue to be self-intersecting. As a result, they can only be copied into shapefiles or file geodatabases; SDE geodatabases will not accept them. (The ArcSDE API enforces geometry integrity rules.) I can do some clunky work-arounds, like making field staff copy trackline shapefiles to and from a FTP site. Or syncing all tracklog points, but this can be 3500 points per person! A single-click, two-way sync of a few self-intersecting lines would be a whole lot better. Is there any way to allow self-intersecting lines to sync?

Is there a way to turn an AXF layer's labels on and off (set SIMPLELABELRENDERER visible = true or false) from an applet? I am trying to create an applet form with a single checkbox that users can use to turn labels on or off for multiple AXF layers, but it appears that the label property of a layer is not exposed.

Although I don't have experience with using JScript or writing scripts for shapefiles, it looks like you've done everything correctly. I don't know if using AXF would help, but it's fairly easy to try by selecting this option during the checkout process and then editing in ArcPadStudio. If your script is simple enough to convert to the default vbscript, that might be a good option to try too.
