Oh you are right, the Renderer is new to ArcGIS 10. Cool, I'll upgrade my VS and SL toolkit and try again using AGS 10. thanks for the help, Steve

Hi Jennifer, Can you provide any sample code (or even pseudo code)? The sample I mentioned uses: Dim identifyTask As New IdentifyTask(URL) What is the syntax if I don't wish to have a new identify task for each layer, but rather a single identify task which works on any visible layer (like the ArcMap Identify tool with the "visible layers" option chosen)? Thanks, Steve

Hi Jennifer, Thanks for the info. I don't have access to an ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 machine to test this - I'm running ArcGIS Server 10, which apparently doesn't connect with the version of Silverlight/Visual Studio that I'm using. I'm hoping to upgrade shortly - but in the meanwhile, can you point me at a sample ArcGIS Server 9.3.1 service which has the symbology already set? As far as I can see, all of the services under http://serverapps.esri.com/ArcGIS/rest/services are either Tiled, or don't have symbology (unless I'm missing something). Thanks again, Steve

The sample at http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/silverlight/samples/start.htm#Identify shows how to run an Identify operation on a layer. The Identify layer is hard-coded: Dim identifyTask As New IdentifyTask("http://sampleserver1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/" & "Demographics/ESRI_Census_USA/MapServer") Is it possible to write an Identify tool which will work on any visible feature layer? Thanks, Steve

The sample at http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/silverlight/samples/start.htm#FeatureLayerRendering shows how to add a FeatureLayer to the map. This sample hard-codes the symbology - but is it possible to access the symbology (and other properties) which were defined in ArcMap, then published to ArcGIS Server? Eg my services catalog shows a layer with properties like: Min. Scale: 100000 Drawing Info: Renderer: Simple Renderer: Symbol: Picture Marker Symbol: Can I use these programatically, without having to hard-code them? Thanks, Steve

There's a sample ArcGIS 10 server at http://sampleserver3.arcgisonline.com/ and this doesn't work either, so I think the problem is due to incompatibilities between ArcGIS Server 10, Visual Studio 2008 and the version of the Silverlight SDK I'm using. I'll try upgrading to VS 2010 and the latest ArcGIS Silverlight SDK.

Hi everyone, I'm a Silverlight novice so please bear with me. I've installed the sample at http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/silverlight/samples/start.htm#DynamicMap on my PC and I can successfully build and run this sample, using the sample ArcGIS Server service provided: <esri:ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer ID="MyLayer" Url="http://serverapps.esri.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/California/MapServer" /> When I substitute my own dynamic map service layer, the application runs without an error, and I see the animated ESRI logo in the lower right corner, but my map service does not appear. I'm using: <esri:ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer ID="MyLayer" Url="http://qsq-brcon15-pc/ArcGIS/rest/services/Robbery/MapServer" /> The ArcGIS Services Directory shows me that this is a valid non-cached service containing a single polygon layer. I can preview this service in ArcCatalog or by creating a Web Application in ArcGIS Server Manager, so I know it's definitely working. The service's spatial reference is different, but since this isn't specified anywhere in the simple Silverlight code, shouldn't Silverlight just use the spatial reference of this layer? Spatial Reference: PROJCS["Lamberts CC NSW",GEOGCS["GCS_GDA_1994",DATUM["D_GDA_1994",SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137.0,298.257222101]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0.0],UNIT["Degree",0.0174532925199433]],PROJECTION["Lambert_Conformal_Conic"],PARAMETER["False_Easting",0.0],PARAMETER["False_Northing",0.0],PARAMETER["Central_Meridian",147.0],PARAMETER["Standard_Parallel_1",-29.5],PARAMETER["Standard_Parallel_2",-35.5],PARAMETER["Scale_Factor",1.0],PARAMETER["Latitude_Of_Origin",-32.5],UNIT["Meter",1.0]] Any ideas as to why my service doesn't show in Silverlight, and how I can debug this? Thanks, Steve

I can't see any samples at http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/silverlight/samples/start.htm showing how to add a Legend to ArcGIS Server with Silverlight. Is it possible to have a legend which is automatically updated from the Table of Contents? That is, the symbology matches that of the layers and the visibility is tied to the layer's visibility. If yes, is there any sample code available? Thanks, Steve

Is it possible to add a layer to ArcGIS Server dynamically? This would be the equivalent of using the Add Data button in ArcMap, to load a new dataset into the map. Thanks, Steve

Hi Dominique, Thanks very much for the tip - I should have read the instructions more closely. Is there a way to display a non-cached layer using the symbology which has already been set in the MXD? The services catalog shows that there is already symbology set for these features: Drawing Info: Renderer: Unique Value Renderer: Field 1: statecode Simple Fill Symbol: Style: esriSFSSolid, Color: [190, 243, 250, 255] Thanks, Steve

I'm a novice at SilverLight so I'm experimenting with the samples at http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/silverlight/help/Creating_featurelayer.htm This shows how to add a feature layer onto a basemap layer: <esri:FeatureLayer ID="MyFeatureLayer" Url="http://sampleserver1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Specialty/ESRI_StatesCitiesRivers_USA/MapServer/0" > </esri:FeatureLayer> http://sampleserver1.arcgisonline.com/ArcGIS/rest/services/Specialty/ESRI_StatesCitiesRivers_USA/MapServer shows that this featureclass has the spatial reference 4326 and is a dynamic layer (not fused cache). This sample works fine on my machine in Visual Studio 2008 SP1 with ArcGIS Server 10. The problem comes when I try to substitute my own ArcGIS Server layer. Using the Services Directory I can see the details of my service: http://steve-xps/ArcGIS/rest/services/States/MapServer Layers: States (0) Spatial Reference: 4326 Single Fused Map Cache: false The details seem to be identical to the sample ESRI service (although my layer is a polygon), but this layer doesn't show on the map when I run my SilverLight application. I can view this layer in ArcCatalog and there are definitely features there, and they're in the correct geographic position. In Visual Studio I'm replacing the reference above with: <esri:FeatureLayer ID="MyFeatureLayer" Url="http://steve-xps/ArcGIS/rest/services/States/MapServer/0" > </esri:FeatureLayer> Any suggestions as to why my layer isn't showing? Thanks, Steve

There's a sample at http://resources.esri.com/help/9.3/arcgisserver/apis/javascript/gmaps/help/google_start.htm#topics/samples/identify_features.html which shows how to create an Identify tool in JavaScript using Google Maps. This is great, but is overly complicated. I just need to know how to perform a simple Identify function on a layer - I don't want to search 3 layers at once and return the information in a tabbed InfoWindow. Does anyone have any sample code to do a simple Identify on a single layer? Thanks, Steve
