Since the initial release of GeoInquiries in 2014, millions of students have experienced how GIS can bring a new, spatial perspective to many different subject areas. By all pedagogical accounts, this program with its curriculum-first design was very successful.

All I wanted to find… was the Great Wall of China. I didn’t need each historic section, or attributes related to the materials used. I just wanted a basic polyline, of the Great Wall, that I could use in ArcGIS Online. I couldn’t find it.

ArcGIS Online holds so much promise for data sharing… but we are still hiding an amazing wealth of data away in silos. Data has been siloed off because of a lack of data sharing, poor metadata, permissions issues, and other reasons. But we can start to tear down some of these walls!

One of the topics I frequently write and teach about is how to find, evaluate, and use geospatial data.  Given the advance of the open data movement, the plethora of geospatial data libraries, portals, and Hub sites, and the increasing ease of bringing that data into ArcGIS Pro, ArcGIS Online, and other tools, is such a course still needed?  I submit that it is needed more than ever, for the reasons I describe in this article.  This article also contains the content for this much-needed course.
