The editing tools use the units of the data frame (aka, the map) coordinate system by default, but you can override this by typing a unit abbreviation with your distance. So, to enter a distance in nautical miles, type nm after the number: such as 5 nm. See this help topic for the full list of abbreviations and more info: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.2/#/About_distance_units_and_editing/01m600000036000000/

Honestly, we removed this shortcut intentionally. We changed how topology selection works and enhanced moving and reshaping edges in ArcGIS 10.1, so we wanted to emphasize selecting edges over selecting nodes. For example, detaching and reconnecting edges (sometimes referred to as a "split-move") is much simpler in ArcGIS 10.1, as you now select only the edge and not both the node and the edge. We also added a new tool to select connected edges. You can still select a node by clicking it, though. The shortcuts available with the Topology Edit tool are listed here: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/Keyboard_shortcuts_that_can_be_used_while_editing/01m600000011000000/ More on what's new for editing in 10.1: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/What_s_new_for_editing/016w0000002v000000/ That said, so we can understand your workflow, what are you trying to do when you want to select the nodes alone with N?

Maybe see if this topic helps: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/Best_practices_for_using_feature_templates/01m70000002s000000/ From the section, "Reasons why some feature templates are not displayed in the Create Features window": The layer is not visible. You need to turn on the layer in the table of contents. The layer is part of a group layer that is not visible. You need to turn on the group layer in the table of contents and ensure the sublayer is visible. The layer has a visible scale range that is beyond the map's current scale. Right-click the layer in the table of contents and click Zoom To Make Visible to bring the layer into view. You can update or remove the scale range on the General tab of the Layer Properties dialog box. The layer is from a parcel fabric dataset. You use the Parcel Editor toolbar to create new parcels rather than the Create Features window. The layer has a definition query applied, but the feature templates do not match it. You need to open the feature template's properties and set a default attribute value that satisfies the query. You can update or remove the expression on the Definition Query tab of the Layer Properties dialog box. In ArcGIS 10.1, there is a message that appears on the Create Features window with more information about why a particular feature template is hidden. In ArcGIS 10.0, there is no message, but these reasons apply there as well.

You can use Reshape Feature in conjunction with tracing if you have ArcGIS 10 or 10.1. You can also set an offset on the trace. (This is much trickier in ArcGIS 9.x.) See if these steps help you. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/Reshaping_a_line_to_match_another_feature/01m600000016000000/ If you need to extend an existing line and then trace in the new segments at the end of the line, try the Continue Feature tool with trace. Continue Feature is not on the user interface in ArcGIS 10, but needs to be added (you need to install at least ArcGIS 10 SP2 to get this). With ArcGIS 10.1, it is on the Edit Vertices toolbar. Continue Feature with ArcGIS 10: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/#/by_sketching/001t00000412000000/ Continue Feature with ArcGIS 10.1: http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/by_sketching/01m800000020000000/ Keep in mind that only geodatabases can store true curves. If you are trying to trace a curve and store it in a shapefile, you will end up with a series of straight lines that looks like a curve.

Yes, this was a change to the Create Features window and other editing windows for ArcGIS 10.1. This way, if you are only editing attributes, for example, you don't have to keep closing the Create Features window every time you start editing. As Jonathan said, you can reopen them from the Editor menu, and a few windows, including Create Features, have a button directly on the Editor toolbar. From the What's new in Editing in 10.1: In ArcGIS 10.0, the Create Features window opened automatically at the start of every edit session to help familiarize editors with the new environment. With ArcGIS 10.1, it opens for the very first edit session; after that, the window retains its previous state of being docked, pinned, or closed. For example, if you close the Create Features window because you are only editing existing features or attribute values, it will still be closed the next time you start editing??even in a different map or ArcMap session. When you need the window, display it again from the Editor toolbar. This framework change has been applied to all windows used in the editing environment, such as the Attributes or the Edit Sketch Properties windows. If any editing-related windows are open when you are not in an edit session, the windows are shown in gray to indicate they are inactive.

Are you using either ArcGIS 10 or 10.1? If so, you will see a preview of the symbology as you sketch. To see only a wireframe (as it was in ArcGIS 9), go to the Editor toolbar > Editor menu > Options > General tab and uncheck Use symbolized feature during editing. When you finish the sketch, the polygon will be symbolized with its proper fill. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/#/Changing_the_edit_sketch_vertex_and_segment_symbols/01m700000069000000/ http://blogs.esri.com/esri/arcgis/2010/10/05/preparing-a-map-for-editing-working-on-top-of-imagery/

Hi Joe - Is there any chance the ArcGIS for Local Government - Address Management add-in has the tools you need? Maybe the Create Road and Split Intersecting Road tool? http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/localgovernment/10.1/index.html#//028s00000073000000 If not, you might contact the Local Government folks or post your suggestion to the ArcGIS Ideas site: http://ideas.arcgis.com/idealist?c=09a300000004xET&category=local+government

There is some chance your data may have previously had COGO attribute fields. COGO is mostly used with parcel or survey data and records directions and lengths into the attribute table. If COGO attributes are found, ArcMap automatically splits line segments where they change directions to make sure each feature is completely straight or curved (known as "two-point lines"). If you still have the old data, maybe you can compare it to the fields in the new data. If you find that some fields are no longer present, COGO is probably the cause of the behavior and you will need to add them again to make the lines split automatically. http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/#/An_overview_of_COGO/001t000000mr000000/ http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/#/About_COGO_and_feature_templates/001t000000n0000000/ COGO is the only built-in functionality that I can think of that would automatically split lines, although there could be add-ins or scripts out there that will do this without the added maintenance of the COGO fields. You could also use the Split Line At Vertices or Split Line At Point geoprocessing tools after you create the feature.

This looks like a bug. A field does stay read-only if you try to paste into that one cell. However, if you use Paste Attributes to paste all of them, it will update the read-only field. We'll look at fixing this in an upcoming service pack.

Sorry, I don't think you can resize the Object Loader dialog box or the list of fields in it. Again, you might try Append or another geoprocessing tool here.

The bug is NIM081964: Enable and Disable Editor Tracking commands should be available off the Manage submenu with a Basic license. I think what you are hitting with batch mode is the same experience you get when running the tool by itself on a single feature class. Each individual parameter is optional, but when taken collectively, at least one of them is required for the tool to execute. You need to enter the name for each field you want to be tracked AND also indicate that you want the field to be created if it doesn't exist. Perhaps we could enhance the tool workflow with better defaults and validity checks. Thanks for the feedback.

The documentation is correct. You should be able to right-click a dataset > Manage > Enable Editor Tracking. Unfortunately, with a Basic license, the command was left off the Manage menu (this is a bug planned to be fixed in 10.1 SP1), although it is present with other licenses. However, the geoprocessing tool or dataset properties dialog box can still be used. In cases where you can see Enable Editor Tracking and Disable Editor Tracking but they are disabled, check the type of item you are right-clicking (feature classes can definitely be tracked) and go to the properties of the geodatabase to make sure it is from ArcGIS 10 or newer. Thanks for reporting this.

The default limit was implemented to maintain performance while working with the Divide command in ArcGIS 9, which became Split and Construct Points in ArcGIS 10. In some cases, particularly when dividing by distance, you could inadvertently create and flash very large numbers of features. To increase the limit, try creating this registry key. Start the Windows Registry Editor, navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER > Software > ESRI > Desktop10.0 > ArcMap > Garcia, right-click, and click New > DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name it MaxDivisionPoints. Right-click the key, click Modify, and enter 2000 (or the maximum you want) for the Value data. Flashing on Split will only occur if fewer than 100 features are created. This works in ArcGIS 10 SP3 and newer service packs.
