chiliblast, Are you working with secure map services? If so, are you using a trusted certificate or a self-signed certificate? I had errors working with the Flex Viewer using a connection to ArcGIS Server with just a self-signed certificate. We had to switch to using a "trusted certificate" on the ArcGIS Server (server hosting the map services) in order for the Flex Viewer (on another server) to accept the secure map service without errors.

Is it possible to register a folder connection with ArcGIS Server that uses a hidden UNC path? For example \\server\D$\folder. The ArcGIS Server user has full control security access to this directory. Is it the $ in the UNC path that is causing the problem? Our IT dept wants to use a hidden UNC path for security. In ArcGIS Server manager, i can create a folder connection by providing the drive letter path and the hostname of the computer. But an ArcGIS Desktop connection does not have the same way to connect. In Deskop, there is not a way to specify the hostname and a drive letter path...use have to provide a UNC path. Any ideas on how to register a hidden UNC path with ArcGIS Server?

Your plan is to secure services outside your organization and unsecure services inside your org. But what if you did it the opposite way. Securing services internally so that the public could not access them and unsecuring services externally. I have a similar situation. As directly by our IT dept, we went the route of purchasing two ArcGIS Server licenses - one for internal services (unsecure) and one for external services (secure). However, if I was restricted to only one license of ArcGIS Server, this is how I would set it up: You could setup ArcGIS Server to use secure services (https) with SSL encryption (trusted certificate). Use the GIS Tier authentication on the GIS Server and set the Web Adaptor to use anonymous authentication in IIS. Then put all your unsecure services (the ones you want the public to see without logging in) in the root directory and set permissions to Public. Then create a folder for your secure services (the ones you want only your internal users to see) and set permissions on that folder to a role which contains the users who should be able to access those services. If you have web maps that need to use secure map services, you can put those in a folder that also has the permissions set to a role, then create tokens for the web maps to use those secure services. The public would not be able to see the folders that have permissions set but would be able to see all map services in the root directory. The internal users could see all the public services (in the root directory) plus whatever folders they have been given access to use.

I wanted to chime in incase this point had not been made clear. There's a difference between an enterprise geodatabase and ArcSDE application service. You can have an enterprise geodatabase (Example: SQL Server or Oracle) and also have ArcSDE installed for an application service. Or you can have an enterprise geodatabase and not have ArcSDE installed. Both options require an ArcGIS Server Basic license. At ArcGIS Desktop 10.0, the default connection type to an enterprise geodatabase assumed the application service was installed - although ESRI recommended using a direct connect at "best practices". At 10.1 and above, ArcGIS Desktop uses the direct connection by default. You still have the option of connecting using an application service, but the setup is hidden in the ArcToolbox. After 10.2, ArcSDE will no longer be available...so you will have to use a direct connect to get to your enterprise geodatabase. Hope this helps.

I discovered my problem. When Web Tier authentication is used, you must publish map services using the Web Adaptor URL. I had ArcGIS Server setup to use the Web Tier (for Windows single sign-on), but was using an ArcGIS Server connection in ArcMap with the GIS Server URL (http://gisserver:6080/arcgis). Since the authentication happens at the Web Tier....you need to use the Web Adaptor URL to publish (http://webadaptor/arcgis). Now....no more errors.

I tried restarting the server and creating a new ArcGIS Server connection in ArcMap, but neither worked. Still same error. I added a new user with Admin rights to publish and created a new ArcGIS Server connection in ArcMap, but still the same error. There are no error reports at all on the server under .../arcgisserver/machinename/errorreports. There are no logs under the .../arcgisserver/machinename/server directory mentioning this error message or anything with a time stamp that would relate back to the time I'm trying to publish the service and seeing the error in ArcMap. The publishing tools GP service says "Geoprocessing service instance is successfully contructed." from two weeks ago.

I'm on ArcGIS Server 10.2. When I try to publish a map service from ArcMap, I get an error mesage: Error: "Unable to connect to publishing tools service. Verify the service is up and running. Please consult the GP Results Windows for enhanced error description or contact your admin for server logs." I checked and the Publishing Tools service is running. I am successful in publishing a map service when I create a service definition file first, then use Manager to publish the service from the SD file. Why is it that I can't publish from ArcMap directly? There are no errors in the log files for ArcGIS Server. The GP Results windows provide the same error message as the one stated above. I tried stopping and starting the ArcGIS Server service thinking that the publishiing tools service was corrupted somehow, but it still gives the error message after the restart. I get the error message in ArcMap when I try to publish as either an admin or a publisher.

My main goal is to disable or deauthorize the geodatabase so that we will not be responsible for licencing the enterprise database (ArcGIS Server Basic). I'm ok with the wayward tables and geometry that come with enabling the geodatabase. We can remove the SDE user and schema. So do you know how I would go about manually removing the authorization key? I just want to be legal with ESRI and don't need a perfectlly reverted database.

So if you didn't create a database snapshot before you enabled it as a geodatabase, what then? Can you deauthorize the enterprise geodatabase?

I contacted ESRI tech support on this issue. They said the problem may be because I did not build footprints after I loaded rasters to the mosaic dataset. I thought you didn't need to build footprints if your data did not have No Data areas, but according to ESRI, you ALWAYS need to build footprints after loading rasters no matter what your data looks like. So their solution was to redo the mosaic dataset. My mosaic dataset was 1.15TB, not a small redo. I did redo it and the analyze mosaic dataset worked....but the overviews failed and we couldn't get them to work. So now I'm back at using the original mosaic dataset where the analyze dataset function does not work. I decided I can live without the analyze function becuase the mosaic dataset works perfectly....other than that.

Is there a way to increase the idle time-out for ArcGIS Server Manager in 10.2? I see documentation on how to do this in 10.0 and lower, but not 10.2. I would like to be able to stay logged into Manager while I work on other related tasks. Stephanie

I'm trying to setup authentication for single sign-on access to ArcGIS Server. I'm on version 10.2 for Server and Desktop. In ArcGIS Server Manager, I have enabled Web authentication tier and mode. With IIS on the Web Adaptor setup for Anonymous Authentication on the arcgis directory, a test user can see the root directory but not a secure directory (which it has permission to). With IIS on the Web Adaptor setup for Windows Authentication on the arcgis directory, a test user cannot see any of the map services...cannot even connect. The user is prompted for their username and password over and over. I've tried setting the root directory to Public as well as "Private, but allow access to all users logged in". Neither work to allow the test user to access map services when Windows Authentication is set on the web adaptor. I tested this connection while logged into Windows as the test user. My understanding of single sign-on authentication is that by using Windows Authentication on the Web Adaptor server and the Web Tier authentication (setup through Manager), ArcGIs Server would recognize a user when they try to access map services by looking at the existing credintials of the user (how they are logged into their computer). What am I doing wrong?

We are planning to move up to 10.2 by the end of the year...although we may still use application services since we do versioned editing and replication. This is just something that has annoyed us for quite some time, so I wanted to see if there was a work-around. If we can avoid having to ask our IT dept to do administrative tasks for us, all the better.

ArcSDE 10.0 We have a development, test and production ArcSDE environment. While we can log into the development server, our IT group doesn't not allow us to have login access to the test and production environments. For many ArcSDE functions, we can use ArcCatalog, but to stop and start SDE services, we generally use the SDE command line to remotely interact with the environments that we can't log into directly. Here's the problem...we have multiple databases in each ArcSDE instance. While we can use the command line to shut down any SDE service remotely, we cannot remotely start up the services. For example:
sdemon -o shutdown -s servername -i 5153 -u SDE -p password ArcSDE Instance 5153 on servername is Shutdown! sdemon -o start -s servername -i 5153 -u SDE -p password Error: Service 5153 doesn't exist on servername. Operation Failed, Unable to start iomgr.
I have confirmed that the services.sde file has the remote protocol listed and it is uncommented. databasename_sde 5153/tcp I have also added an SDEINSTANCE environmental variable with the path to the services.sde file. Why would ArcSDE recognize the service to shutdown but not to startup???
