Paul, if all you need is to have your parking space features presymbolized and attributed, so that during your edit session, you can choose the correct parking lot symbol before you add the point, you can accomplish this with a feature template. Essentially, you define in advance the default symbol and default attribute for each type of parking space. It will look something like the image below. Each time you add a point, you can pick the type you want. I'm not sure if you're looking for this kind of functionality or something more advanced. There are several help topics on feature templates starting with About feature templates. There are some good introductory ArcMap editing exercises starting with Introduction to the Editing tutorial. Hi Cory, The 1,000 feature limit in ArcMap isn't really a limit, it's just a default setting. When you publish a feature service, you can change the value in the Service Editor. (I don't know if there's an upper limit or not.) Afterwards, there may be drawing constraints in ArcGIS Online--you may get a message popping up on your web map that not all the features can be drawn. As far as I know, there isn't a limit or a default setting in Pro on the number of features that can be published.Melanie Summers might know.

Hi Ravi, if you still have the problem, you should contact Esri Technical Support and open a case. Be sure to let them know that your problem is related to trial software for an Esri Press book. Occasionally there is a bad EVA code in a book, but probably that is not your case since you were able to install the software. It is more likely an issue with assigning the license through ArcGIS Online as Dan suggested. Esri Press does not directly troubleshoot these problems because they don't have a technical staff, but Esri Technical Support will help you. Tim

XY Table To Point is new at version 2.1. (The 2.1 web help is live as of today.) Until you have 2.1 software, I think you have to create a layer from XY Event Data. Then export the layer to a feature class.

If you have a Basic level license, there's a known issue with adding fields to shapefiles through the UI. Thread about it here. The workaround is to use the Add Field geoprocessing tool. Unfortunately, it looks like the bug is not fixed in Pro 2.1.

Hi Sascha, The 180-day trial that comes with the book (Dan referenced the download page) should include a 180-day trial of ArcGIS Online. You need to activate that trial account to create an ArcGIS Online organization. This is different from the free ArcGIS Online account you probably have already--they can coexist. When you signed up for the trial, you should have received an email from Esri with the subject line Esri - Activate Your Free ArcGIS Trial. There's a link in that email to get you started. If you don't see that email in your inbox, check your spam folder. The first thing you'll need to do is set up the ArcGIS Online organization. See the ArcGIS Online help topic Activate subscription. You won't need to invite any members to the organization, because you'll automatically be added as the administrator. Once your organization is set up, follow the instructions in the ArcGIS Online help topic Manage licenses to assign yourself a license. As Pan gis said, when you click the Organization tab in ArcGIS Online, you will see the Manage Licenses link. It's all a bit confusing because, as you said, you're just a single person. But the software is designed in such a way that you have to have an ArcGIS Online organization to get an ArcGIS Pro license. So you end up becoming the administrator of an "organization" that has just one member--you. You can't get going with ArcGIS Pro unless you have that email from Esri with the trial subscription link. If you don't find the email, you can message me and let me know. I'll forward this thread to the Esri Press team so they're aware and can step in to help if needed. Tim

Not sure but after assigning the license you may need to restart ArcGIS Pro. You can always check what you're licensed for in Pro. From the start page of the application, click About ArcGIS Pro in the bottom left corner. (If you're in a project, click the blue Project tab.) This takes you to the project page. In the list of options on the left, click Licensing. In the top box, you'll see whether you have a Basic, Standard, or Advanced license. (The one that's not grayed-out is yours.) In the next box, you'll see a list of extensions and whether you have a license for them or not.

The ArcGIS Trial definitely includes the Spatial Analyst extension as part of the download. John's reply is right--you have to assign the Spatial Analyst license to yourself in your trial ArcGIS Online organization (assuming you're the administrator). On the Manage Licenses page, you'll see the bar graph he described of products that come with your trial and available licenses. I think you'll have 5 Pro licenses available, 5 Spatial Analyst licenses, etc. Underneath that bar graph of available licenses is a list of the members of the organization (you will be one of them). Click your name. It shows up on the right side of the page under Selected members. Make sure your membership level is 2, which it probably already is. At the bottom of the page, click the Configure button. You'll see a column for ArcGIS Pro and a column for extensions. Check the box for Spatial Analyst and click the Update button. That should do it.

Hi Jason, The task is not saved as a file in the zip file. Instead, it is part of the project, so you’ll access it directly from within ArcGIS Pro. In the Catalog pane (formerly Project pane), expand the “Tasks” folder. The task should be in the folder. Tim

Hi John, Besides installing Pro, you've also installed the tutorial data for the book, right? If not, it's on the book's resource page. Assuming you have the data installed... When you click Import Map, that opens a file browser window like the image in the book (on p. 47, if we're on the same page). In the directory tree on the left, under My Computer, you can see your C: drive, right? Click on that to select it. Now all the folders on your C: drive should appear on the right. In that window on the right, scroll down and double-click the EsriPress folder to see its contents. Then double-click the GTKAGPro folder. Then double-click the World folder and you should see World_data.mxd. Click it to select it and then click OK. That will import the map. The image in the book is showing you the final stage of the browsing process and not describing the intermediate stages. There are no stupid people. However, there is instructional design that doesn't anticipate user expectations. Tim

To elaborate on Dan's comment: on the Symbology pane, choose Graduated Colors. Pick the number of classes you want. Change the Method from Natural Breaks to Manual Interval. Edit your upper values and labels to look the way you want. Then individually click the symbols in each row to pick the colors. As in this image.

Jonathan Bailey Thanks for asking this question. I had the same problem and didn't know what to do. I also got it to work following Katie's instructions but this workflow seems unintuitive. When you edit the Map settings, the text for Default Basemap says, "Set the group in the Basemap Gallery above and choose the map to open." That strongly implies that when you make a choice in the Basemap Gallery, you will see a corresponding set of maps to choose from in the Default Basemaps. However, if your choice in the Basemap Gallery is Esri Default (which it probably is for most people), that's not what happens. At the very least, this text should be edited to make clear that you need to create an empty group and then point to documentation with Katie's steps. I also had to repeat steps 4 and 5. The maps didn't show up the first time. They showed up the second time.
