Go here on your esri arcgis server http://localhost:6080/arcgis/admin/login login with your admin. The under Resources: Click on Machines The click your server name. Then under supported options: Click on edit Then edit the values below…. And hit save edits. This will cycle down your arcgis server and restart all services so best to do during low load time. App server maximum heap size (in MB): 512 SOC maximum heap size (in MB): 128 This was an ESRI suggestion so I am not assuming any liability here. ☺ Aaron Kreag, GISP GIS Director <http://www.bisconsultants.com/> (800) 247-9045 ext. 123 | C: (972) 213-6819 (888) 882-7911 14802 Venture Dr. | Farmers Branch, TX 75234 Connect with us! You have a 16 core server so optimal setting for the min is 1 and max is 17 (cores plus 1). Virtual memory setting is good. You may also want to check under the arcgis server admin, edit, adjust your soc process HEAP to double the current setting. Aaron

I spoke with a few different ESRI tech guys and one of the topics was virtual memory usage. They told me that they have sent questions to the development team for an explination of services, processes and virtual memory without a reply. He said they are not sure, just that "it appears" the windows virtual memory is much more crucial in 10.1 and newer. Sent via the Sa7sung Galaxy Note® 3, an AT&T 4G LTE smartphone

Paul, I am a much better GIS guy than IT guy but it was VMware ESX...not sure on the version. From what I remember there seemed to be a bigger VM overhead when compared to HyperV (and naturally the physical server alone). The other issue that I found often was that with HyperV you were not permitted to allocate more resources to the VM than physical host had to offer. I often would see IT guys, take VMware, create a cluster with say .... 128GB RAM and 16 cores on the physical side, they would then "over-allocate"....basically creating a list of VMs that shared resources and if you were to total then number of RAM and CPU on the virtual servers it would exceed or far exceed the actual physical availability. They would argue and we would end up in that "we are IT so go away" environment. In the end, I have ended up with the belief that HyperV might be better than VMware for GIS.

Paul, We run HyperV here and the system guys have it tuned to the max. Its been now a week and we are still running without an issue on the stability side. I have found that a weekly reboot at a minimum does help.... I have never had very good luck running VMware with my enterprise GIS deployments. Aaron

As a follow up. We fixed this issue. After confirming that physical resources were not under stress, we set min process to 1 and max to 13, also went and adjusted the windows virtual memory to best and system managed. This did the trick. Contact me if you would like to discuss.

As a follow up. In consultation with ESRI we found a series of XML type errors below in the logs: Invalid xml registry file: c:\program files\arcgis\server\bin\XmlSupport.dat - 88 Unable to instantiate class for xml schema type: CIMDEGeographicFeatureLayer - 29 Unable to instantiate class for xml schema type: CIMDocumentInfo - 30 Unable to instantiate class for xml schema type: CIMGISProject - 29 In the AGS logs. \logs\servername\services\MXDNAME.MapServer Verified that CPU and RAM were not over utilized, ruled out firewall, antivirus and network. Looks like at 10.1 and newer...not only does ESRI recommend a min of 4GB RAM per core in a virtual server but from the sound of it, the virtual memory settings in windows seem to be a bigger issue. Adjusted the virtual memory to best and system managed...rebooted the server and have gone now 4 days with no issues..... According to ESRI....they are thinking that virtual memory and the "committed memory" have a bigger impact than actual RAM now. As a side note, they also mentioned adjusting windows HEAP and stated that they recommend no more than 200 map services per site (max). Hope this helps someone. Aaron

Does ESRI recommend not rebooting servers? Rebooting of an ESRI server can happen for a list of reasons....but maintenance or updates are the norm, or as a last resort when the application stops responding and ESRI support asks if we can reboot the server in the middle of the day, etc etc etc. I would suggest that if rebooting is not recommended...1. it be documented and 2. the software be more stable. For the record, every ESRI course I have ever taken and every ESRI tech person I have talked to in the last 6 years says "rebooting AGS weekly ensures the best health and performance"...clearing hung processes, clearing temp directories, freeing up RAM, etc. I think all of our services are set to 2 min. We can change to 1 min but 0 min causes "service not available" errors in the web map on our lessor used services until it gets woke up and the SOC process starts, this causes end users to call and report issues and errors that go away with a refresh after a few minutes but clog the phone lines and email. So setting to 0 is not an option. Not sure about the original poster..... Aaron

Patrick- What version of ArcGIS for Server we are looking at for this? – 10.2.2 What is the OS that is being used? - Windows 2012 How many published services are running on this machine? - 52 What do the System Resources look like as you watch this occur? (CPU, Memory, etc.) - 16% CPU and 42% RAM One thing that may help with better startup after a reboot of the Machine is to set the ArcGIS Server Service in Windows Services to Automatic (Delayed Start). This will wait for other services to start up and then start the ArcGIS Server up. - Already set up like this. Aaron

Its now April 2015, almost a year since this was commented on. We have 10.2.2 and much of the same issues. Can I call this a thread wake up? I need to go back through and read all of these reply's. My big question is....did anyone move to 10.3 and see any improvements in performance / stability??

We are having the exact same issue at 10.2.2! If we reboot the server and then publish it works, if the number of SOC processes increase and the server is under load it fails. This seems a bit ridiculous given at version 10sp5 we had twice the number of SOC processes and half the server!! Would love to discuss further. When calling ESRI, they do not have an answer and despite the CPU at 15% and RAM at less than 50% it still fails. This is an application issue and it needs to be fixed. Version 10sp5 was much more stable. My email is akreag at bisconsultants dot com.

Chances are pretty good that the old dude installed and configured everything using his domain credentials....IT probably killed his login and now you have a jacked up enterprise GIS. Major....major changes between 10 and 10.3. If you have the time, energy and resources I might wipe the servers and start from scratch. Your version 10.3 MXDs will have compatibility issues with version 10 so just take note that all ESRI products in your organization will need to be updated.....which means a complete uninstall of version 10. You can email me akreag at bisconsultants dot com if you would like to discuss a bit.

We have 10.2.2.....running 60 map services...min 2 and max 25. For whatever reason, almost every time we reboot the application box and it will start the services and then shut them all down and then start again...all over like a 15 minute period. We see other odd behavior with this 10.2.2 install. Our version 10sp5 seemed more stable.

I am having the exact same issue now with 10.2.2. Would love to chat about it sometime. Did you switch to 10.3? It seems I haven't seen the same issues mentioned online with 10.3 and I am wondering if it is a more stable version of AGS. My email is akreag at bisconsultants dot com. In fact I will say, anyone in this thread....please send me a note. Thanks!!
