Can you try to rename your Esri folder in your Application Data folder and Registry? Esri Folder: 1) In Windows 7: Navigate to C:\Users\<your_username>\AppData\Roaming\ESRI. In Windows XP: Navigate to C:\Documents and Settings\<Your Userprofile>\Application Data\ESRI. Note: If you can't see the Application Data folder, go to Tools > Folder Options > View. Under Hidden files and folders, select Show hidden files, folders, and drives. In Windows 7, press Alt to get the toolbar that the Tools menu is on. 2) Rename the Esri folder to Esri_Old. Registry Settings: 1) Open the Start Menu and in the search bar, type regedit. Select the program regedit.exe. 2) Expand the HKEY_CURRENT_USER and Software folder. 3) Rename ESRI to ESRI_Old and close the registry editor Now, open ArcMap and see if the issue is still reproducible. ArcMap may take a second to load, as it is recreating those folders. If the problem is not reproducible, close any instance of ArcMap and ArcCatalog and you can copy the folder connections from the ESRI_Old\Desktop10.1\ArcCatalog to the new folder ESRI\Desktop10.1\ArcCatalog.

This may be off base, but how about clipping to the current extent of the data driven page? You can include all layers within the clip so it'll clip vector and raster data.

Here's some documentation on hosted content. If you have 10.1 and an ArcGIS.com subscription, you can create a feature service from your shapefile data, and then bring that feature service into ArcMap 10.1 and edit it. This will sync the changes to your layer on ArcGIS.com.

That doesn't sound like it's possible in ArcGIS Online, but definition strings are possible through the Flex Viewer. They aren't dynamic though; whatever you set in the Flex Viewer is set for the application. A user won't be able to change the query dynamically. Your workaround is probably your best bet, as the same approach can be used in the application.

Have you tried to use a shadow effect instead? You might like the look a little better. It's under the Advanced Text tab.

Do you have a subscription for ArcGIS Online? You can create feature services from your data, which will create a service URL. You can then use the ArcGIS Flex Viewer, (a web client that uses an application builder, so you don't need any programming experience), add your service using the service URL by signing into ArcGIS Online through the builder and use the Query or Search widget to zoom to features you select. I'm not sure how your second question would work with the Flex Viewer, though.

What browser are you using to import the shapefiles? Does it happen with multiple browsers, (IE, Firefox, or Chrome)?

What you can do is use the Dissolve tool on the Geology field, then in the output, create a new field and number the different types however you need them. Then, join this new table back to your original data. You can also look into domains, which are used to enforce data integrity by using code values to describe other values. First, create a new file geodatabase, if the data isn't already stored in one and import your shapefile into it. From your dissolved output, export the attribute table to a standalone table. Then, use the Table to Domain tool and fill out the table accordingly. Finally, set the new text field you have to use the domain you just created.

Hm, off the top of my head, what you may be able to do is run an Intersect between the points and US counties layer to append the US Counties information to the points layer. Then, use the Select By Attributes to select for records where the county name from the points does not equal the county name from the appended US Counties information, calculate a No for these records, switch the selection, and calculate a Yes for the reverse of the selection. Perform the same analysis for the state name.

Have you looked at the Network Analyst toolbox in ArcToolbox? The Make Route Layer gp tool is what you're going to want to use. This will create a route layer that you can export to a feature class and add a field to calculate length.

I'm pretty sure the case is that if you close the Create Features window, it'll retain those settings and keep it closed whenever you're in an edit session, but I may be wrong. Either way, go to the Editor drop down menu > Editing Windows > Create Features.

Using 9.3.1, you'll have to upload the shapefiles individually to create feature services. The feature services can then be added to a web map and symbolized as you need them to be. You can pan, zoom in, and access Esri basemaps for your web map. You can also create web applications using the templates provided that can be embedded in a website. Anyway, since you have 9.3.1, you can't simply upload a whole project that can be accessed through a web map; that can only be done through 10.1. If you had any version of ArcGIS Server, you can upload your map services to ArcGIS Online that are served from your ArcGIS Server. These can be stored in your My Content section and shared with everyone or specific groups, and can be done if you have a subscription account or simply a personal account. It's a good way to distribute data to the public as they can create their own maps using the public services through ArcGIS Online.

The ability to publish data directly to ArcGIS Online as hosted services was introduced at 10.1, providing you have a subscription account. If you're using 9.3.1. or 10, you can upload zipped shapefiles or csv files to ArcGIS Online and convert them to feature services, or if you have map services in either version, you can add them to your My Content or the map viewer.

The shadow you see looks like it's on both sides of the line. What you can do is buffer any line features you have, and then play with the symbology to simulate shadows. Setting transparency on the buffer layer will also give you a good effect.
