You need to create a 3D polyline from the coordinates. Not sure if there is an out-of-the-box tool for drillholes with deviation and curve. If not someone may have created an add-on for something like this. I wrote a script that creates 3D boreholes from borehole log data but only straight down. No curve or deviation. You could probably import your 3D coordinates as points, then load them into arc-scene and digitize a new 3d line snapping to the coordinates. This features is only available in version 10 and it would likely be tedious to create many wells in this way.

If you have any export to 2d recommended settings, can you share?M I have always had problems with exporting to 2D in 9.x and older. As soon as I installed version 10 this is has been a lesser of an issue. I tested on 4 different machines with different hardware specs Vista and Windows 7 32 bit and 64 bit. In ArcGIS 10 I have next to no issues exporting to 2D. Previously, I was only able to export low resolution. Now, DPI 600+ and very large scenes yield a high quality and high resolution image. But there are exceptions which I believe might be related to video. On my primary machine that has an NVIDEA Quadro 4000 (2GB) I get some strange shading anomalies on a bare TIN but no anomalies when I drape an aerial image over it. Still, it is a vast improvement over legacy versions in my opinion but there is room for improvement.

I notice that no one from ESRI has posted anything on this thread. I totally agree - I have several UI controls in 9.3.1 that are very important to my work. As it stands now, I won't switch to 10 until I can figure out a way around this. Sometimes I think that ESRI updates software without any input from the people who actually use it. I have since converted nearly all customization into VB .Net Add-Ins and although there was a bit of a learning curve I have to say that that the Add-In structure completely replaced VBA customization. I use VS 2008 express (free version) and I believe that in many ways the new structure is a vast improvement over VBA.

Do you not see the data in ArcScene at all? Or are you just having an issue with visualizing it in 3D? Did you set Base Height to the elevation field in the contour layer?

What about a plugin to convert from ArcMap 9.3 to SketchUp 7? ArcMap 9.3 to SketchUp 6 9.2 (this plugin was never updated to 7 but SketchUp can open version 6 files with no issues) http://sketchup.google.com/intl/en/download/plugins.html

Can someone tell me where to find the plugin needed to convert ArcGIS to SketchUp? There is no plugin for version 10. Convert multipatch to collada then import it into Sketchup.

This is possible programmatically with ArcObjects. There are also 3rd party plugins for ArcGIS; CrossView for ArcGIS: http://www.aprimesoftware.com/ ($500). It works pretty good and supports boreholes, etc. If you want to step it up a notch you could try Target for ArcGIS by Geosoft (http://www.geosoft.com/pinfo/software/targetarcgis/index.asp) which is around $5000. A-Prime software offers a free trial for Cross View and the last time ii spoke with a Geosoft rep they were offering me a free trial as well but I believe Geosoft does that on individual basis.

I need to caculate the area of a property based on the topography, is there really no tool inherent to Desktop 10 or 3d Analyst to do this? It hasn't been an issue until we acquired a 10,000 acre tract with an extremely steep ridge and valley topography. The simplest way I can think of doing this would be to create a grid within my property boundary and calculate individual areas for each polygon. Then caculate slope and create an integer grid of the same size and apply a slope calculation to each polygon's area....there's gotta be an easy way to do this. If it can calculate a 3d perimter and volumes etc, why not a 3d surface area?? Please tell me I'm missing something! Create TIN then export it to a multipatch feature. In version 10 this will also give you 3D area. (Interpolate Polygon to Multipatch) Multipatch Surface Area output: surface_area_field (Optional) The name of the output field containing the 3D area of the resulting multipatches. This area takes the surface undulations into consideration and is always larger than the planimetric area unless the surface is flat, in which case the two are equal. In legacy version 9.3.1 or older you could use the TIN Polygon volume tool, just create a polygon feature class equal to the area of the surface you which to calculate. Create a "double" height field in this polygon and set it to the maximum elevation (or greater) of the actual surface. The Polygon VOLUME tool (which in your case will be useless) will also give you 3D_Area and 2D_Area of the surface.

Not possible with 3D Analyst. 3D Analyst may serve well as the initial step to get all the building footprints and extrude them to proper heights then export the whole thing to Collada and finish the detailed 3D work in another tool such as SketchUp. BTW the poster is a very nice piece of work. I would not call it a fish-eye lens effect though, its more like a folded / inverted projection. Personally I would try SketchUp and then photoshop or some other image processing tool to try to apply the "folded and inverted" effect although it is entirely possible the effect was applied to the 3D model itself. Looking at the poster again I am even more convinced this is an image post processing because if it was truly folded and inverted this way in a 3D environment you should be seeing just the building footprints around the Central Park area.

Marie, If you are using version 9.3.1 or older then i am afraid there is no fix. In fact you will often get the best quality by taking a screen capture which is something I have been told by an ESRI expert on "Ask the cartographer" Version 10 completely fixes all 2D exporting issues; I have been able to export enormous files at any resolution I select.

Just want to know the scale when I export a figure from ArcScene. I have found nowhere can set the scale bar, like in the ArcMap. Thanks. possible, but not an out-of-the box solution.... You cannot use a generic 2-dimensional scale bar in a 3D environment. Such scale bar needs to be 3-dimentional and it will also not serve the same purpose as a scale bar would on a traditional 2D map. (cannot use it to measure distances on the hard copy) I often use a 3D line drawn somewhere near the model but i first rotate to a view I would like to show in the final output so that the scale bar is positioned correctly. To add an alternating bar effect, you can divide the bar to units then symbolize the alternating sections accordingly. You can then add labels manually, which is by no means an easy task in 3D analyst. I also often add a vertical scale bar when i use vertical exaggeration.

Yes. it is better. Some new features and a different work-flow but navigation, rendering and especially exporting to 2D is much improved. Was disappointed with the editing features, do not expect anything close to SketchUp functionality... And 3D export to VRML? Seriously?

Hello if I understand rigth from last posts: Visual Basic 2010 Express is supported, but how to install ArcObjects SDK, because some window popups and it says that I don't have installed supported version of Visual Studio, so i cannot instal SDK ? It seems that you will have to install VS 2008 Express then the SDK then remove VS 2008 and install VS 2010 Express. Unless the most current installer has been upgraded.
