yes. but you will have all kinds of problems with rendering. Just change your Symbol to to a picture symbol.

In Sketchup, the modeling is easy, but maintaining the spatial reference is not. Maybe cross platform spatial reference is not maintained. Not when collada is used though. You could build the entire model in Sketchup and digitize features directly from Google Earth imagery. The model could then be easily visualized in Google Earth if needed. If maintaining spatial references between ArcGIS and SketchUp is important you could start be designing a series of anchor points (must be polygons) then export the anchor points to collada, create the entire model, ground up in sketchup using the anchor points as reference, then import finished product back to ArcScene. (Collada maintains spatial reference.) ESRI needs to add more seamless support for skp files to future versions. Rather then re-inventing the wheel it be much easier to use the fantastic features 3D Anlyst offers with the ability to do architectural and engineering modeling in SketchUp and have the 2 seamlessly integrated.

3D Analyst is great for visualizing terrain / surface data and draping imagery. You can easily visualize vertical and directional holes provided you already have 3D features created. In my humble optioni, 3D Analyst is like a white canvas; the underlying technology is there but it lack in out-of-the box functionality. I have a tool that converts borehole logs into 3D vertical lines but I had to build it from scratch with ArcObjects. Do you need to import and visualize directional drillholes or deviated drillholes with assay values, generate vertical cross sections, use advanced labeling options in 3D? Can't do any of that without advanced knowledge of programming and ArcObjects. There are other 3rd party solutions but I would recommend you look at "Target for ArcGIS" by Geosoft. ESRI partner that has developed 2 ArcGIS extensions for mining and geology. Does not require 3D Analyst. They offer a free trial and have a sample dataset and a tutorial that you can use to evaluate the software. Another software I am a little familiar with which is apparently very popular in mining is GEMS and other packages by Gemcom. Might be an overkill though and it is not user friendly stuff.

I'm trying to get my 3D ArcScene to export to KML files so I can see it in Google Earth as 3D. Does anyone know if this will even work? If I can get the KML's to show up as 3D, can you let me know what I could be doing wrong? Thanks in advance for any help. I'd strongly suggest you do this in Google SketchUp 8 where this process is flawless. You can export multipatch features to collada then take it from there.

Never Remove is on -> Maplex does not place labels for small polygons. I am using a layer provided by my provincial government for the purpose of labelling all known geographical named features. Unlike the federal (CanVec / NTDB) layer which is a point layer the provincial government uses polygons for more accurate placement of labels. A great idea until.... you try to use Maplex, a $4500 labeling extravaganza... (+ tax) Wow! Ouch! (Won't even mention I also got ArcEditor thinking that representations will be awesome!) Maplex off = every polygon is labelled Maplex on = all small labels are not labelled (area < 5m for labels such as town bay and other exact locations) When overzoomed, the unplaced labels start appearing. Never Remove should never remove labels shouldn't it? However it does not never removes as I interpret it. More information about this specific issue here: http://gis.stackexchange.com/questions/9468/how-to-never-remove-labels-in-maplex

hi, what are the extensions included in ArcInfo ?? i have installed arcinfo v10. when i try to enable the spatial analyst, 3d analyst extension. it says "License not available " . what i have to do ?? thank you Each extension is about $4500. (Spatial Analyst, 3D Analyst, Maplex) Not sure about the rest but i suspect it will be more less the same.

A personal opinion: Why would anyone... It's much, much easier to do this type of modelling ground up in Sketchup. And free.

Is this the "3 arc second SRTM" data? Do you mean 90 because the approximate resolution is 90m? Are you trying to verify whether Spatial Analyst produces the correct result? I would say the problem lies in comparing the slope raster which was generated from the DEM itself and the contour lines which are too dense for this type of DEM. I'd say there is a certain degree of interpretation that goes on in the contouring algorithm to calculate the contours from the DEM this course. Also you will probably have better luck posting this in the Spatial Analyst forum.

Does the 3D MultiPatch feature (Discussed in the "Winter 2011" ArcUser magazine) only work in ArcGIS 10 or can that process be done in 9.3.1 Thanks, Brad Can you provide more detail? (Have not read the article) Multipatch feature is not new to version 10 but 3D functionality in version 10 is much improved.

Thanks Jon. Yes i have used the halos but this is only a solution for maps with solid color background. Usually, topographic maps i produce include shaded relief or DEM symbolized with graduated color intervals or both. In actuality i'd prefer to have a contour label the way it is (positioned over the line) but instead of the halo it needs to mask a small portion of the contour (or any other feature i choose in the close proximity so as not to obscure the label itself) It would be fantastic to have this feature a part of the dynamic labeling. My current workaround is as follows: Label features Export to Annotations Clean up annotations manually Convert annotations to polygons Buffer annotation polygons by an appropriate distance used buffered annotation as Mask in the Advanced Drawing Options The result is perfect, but very much static and quite labor intensive Hence the workaround for quick interoffice maps would be to utilize the same Maplex options but move the label above the line. This is especially important when using major and minor contour lines as i typically label only the major contours. Being thicker, the major contour is too obstructed when the label is positioned directly over the line. I still do this with maplex but i loose the nice laddering and uphill orientation options.

I am using ArcGIS 10 and Sketchup 8. Multipatch to Collada was successful but when i imported the .dae file in Sketchup, there's a warning and when i go on it failed. Same with KMZ file. Hope anyone can help me to figure out what was the problem... Yes. KMZ exported from ArcGIS 10 is NOT compatible with Sketchup 7, 8. (Works with Google Earth but crashed on import to SketchUp) As a result it's no longer possible to export point and line features into SketchUp. Collada works fine for me. I sometime get error messages, but ignore them and things seem to work. How large is your dataset?

@ jakubsisak: I am using ArkDesktop version 10 and am also having this export problem with ArcScene... Is there a special setting that you make in order to correct for the poor quality in the 2D exports?? Thanks! Since I made this comment I've changed jobs, computers and configuration. I have a machine far superior to what I had before and although I am still able to export large 2D images from ArcScene I do run into some rendering issues now. Extremely large datasets (High Resolution imagery draped over high density LiDAR data, etc.) often leave linear and other anomaly on the final image. I also have problems with 2D exporting of TINs that have been vertically. exaggerated. (strangely, this works fine with draped imagery) I am still able to export to 2D almost any scene. (No special setting) It seems that the exporter is largely dependent on available memory and the video card.

You didn't miss anything. Transparency cannot be applied to graphics. The "Feature Layer" or "Image Editor" techniques is the only way. Would be a nice feature. Not even certain if there are any plans to do this in the future. Don't think production quality cartography is the ESRI's focus.

Sketchup does not handle very large TIN surfaces very well. What is does well though is TIN rendering. Surface analysis is not the main focus in Sketchup although i love using it for modelling smaller sites. I would recomend simplifying your surface prior to export to COLLADA. TIN -> Multipatch -> COLLADA -> Sketchup method works for me every time although 50,000 points might be pushing the limits. I must say though that it ws a more straight forward export with the old Sketchup ArcGIS utility. (Worked fine until version 9.3.1)

The other 4 dams still work. So it is definitely related to that particular dam/river segment and not to the fact that it is the first time through the loop. Any other ideas? Validate/simplify the geometry before you you attempt to split it.
