Hello David, If Portal for ArcGIS is in ready only mode it is recommend to turn off 'read-only' mode before running an upgrade. Upgrade your ArcGIS Enterprise portal—Portal for ArcGIS | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise If your ArcGIS Server site is in 'read-only' mode the site will be set to editable when you upgrade. After all machines in your site have been successfully upgraded the site will remain in editable mode. You can switch back to ready only mode once the upgrade is complete. Upgrade ArcGIS Server—ArcGIS Server | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Michael Leber, If you are publishing a service where the source data is copied to ArcGIS Data Store the only way to update the source data would be re-publish or overwrite the existing service. While it is possible to script the publishing process that may not be the best workflow in this scenario. Instead of publishing a hosted service I would recommend publishing a referenced service. To achieve this you would register the folder containing the file geodatabase with ArcGIS Server. Then republish your service, the service would then reference your file geodatabase as it's data source. Any changes made to the service source data in the file geodatabase will be reflected in the service. Register your data with ArcGIS Server using Server Manager—Manage data | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise Hope this helps! Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Melanie Fournier, It is possible there are network issues stopping the guest and host portals communicating successfully. Are either the guest or host portals public facing? For example can they be accessed outside of your internal network? If you want to confirm if the host portal can resolved the guest portal I would recommend the follow workflow. Remote to the Portal for ArcGIS (Host) machine. Login to the machine using the account running the Portal for ArcGIS Windows service. Open a browser and attempt to access Portal for ArcGIS (Guest) Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Benjamin, Apologies for not replying to your response sooner. It's likely there is some failure in the sync process that causes the collaboration to share the item as a reference. In order to further constrain the point of failure we would need to review the collaboration sync status and portal logs. This would likely give us more information regarding which step of the sync process is failing. If you want to troubleshoot further and have access to the logs I would recommend creating a support case. I would also recommend the following workflow for items that revert to share as reference: Review the hosted feature layer settings. Ensure the feature layer remains sync enabled. Remove the hosted feature layer from the collaboration group in portal. Initialize a sync, this will remove the associated hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online. Re-share the hosted feature layer to the portal collaboration group. Any follow up questions please let me know. Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Benjamin, Just wanted to double check, you are sharing content as a copy from Portal for ArcGIS to ArcGIS Online is that correct? If the share as copy fails the collaboration defaults to share as reference. This is likely why some of your items in ArcGIS Online are referenced rather than copied. My first recommendation would be to review the portal logs at 'DEBUG' level. Focus on the period of time during which the sync occurs. I would also suggest reviewing the collaboration sync status logs. These should also help point to a cause of failure. It is also useful to identify the specific items that fail to share as copy. About portal logs—Portal for ArcGIS (10.8) | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise Collaboration Sync Status Logs: Example URL: https://hostname.domain.com/portal/sharing/rest ArcGIS Portal Directory > Portals > 'portalID' > Collaborations > 'collaborationID' > Collaboration Workspaces > 'workspaceID' > Sync Status Are your feature layers hosted or referenced? I hope you find these suggestions useful. Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Orlo Dennison, I just wanted to confirm you had created a ArcGIS Server site previously before attempting an upgrade? If that is the case it appears ArcGIS Server is not reading correctly from it's configuration store. In the initial install where were the ArcGIS Server configuration store and directories folders located (C: or E:)? Is this a multi-machine or single-machine deployment? If you are still encountering issues I would recommend created a case with support. At that point we would be able to assist with resolving the ArcGIS Server site issue. Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Magaly CLEMENT, Is the feature layer you are editing referenced or hosted? If you are using a referenced feature layer are you using versioning? If so you may need to reconcile and post your edits before seeing the changes reflected in the web map. Reconcile and post edits to a version—Geodatabases | Documentation Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Brian Fausel I've tried to answer your questions below: "Question 1: It appears to me that when you have a feature layer that is published for collaboration you can only enable editing on the side where you initially publish it. Is that correct? So if you publish to ArcGIS Enterprise, you enable editing there and cannot enable editing in AGOL, and vice-versa." If you share an item as a reference from portal to ArcGIS Online. ArcGIS Online creates an item which references the federated server feature service. The capabilities of the item are determined by the capabilities enabled on the ArcGIS Server service (e.g. query, update, delete etc.). When sharing a hosted feature layer as a copy from portal to ArcGIS Online a hosted feature layer is published in ArcGIS Online. Editing is disabled on the ArcGIS Online hosted feature service. This is intentional as collaboration does not support bi-directional sync. "Question 2: Is it true that you cannot have a “hosted” feature layer in AGOL sync to a “user managed” ArcGIS Enterprise feature service with data residing in SQL? You can only sync to an “ArcGIS managed” feature layer in Portal?" You can sync a referenced feature service (e.g. data in SQL) to ArcGIS Online. As mentioned above a hosted feature service is published in ArcGIS Online. However it is not possible to edit the collaborated hosted feature service. The same logic applies to a hosted feature service shared from ArcGIS Online to portal. "My preferred workflow will not work for what I am trying to accomplish: Publish a “user-managed” feature service with data referenced in a SQL geodatabase into a federated ArcGIS Enterprise Portal. Using distributed collaboration, have that data sync to a “hosted” feature layer on AGOL. My editing requirements are one-way, but I want the editing to be done on the destination “hosted” feature layer in AGOL, not on the initially-published Enterprise SQL feature service. When I set this up, the data synched from Enterprise to AGOL, but then I was not able to enable editing on the “hosted” feature layer in AGOL. The only thing I could do is disable editing in Enterprise." Unfortunately I don't think this workflow will be possible as you will not be able to edit the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online. "Alternate workflow: Publish a “hosted” feature layer directly to AGOL and enable editing. Using distributed collaboration, have that data sync to a “user-managed” feature service with data referenced in SQL. This feature service does not need to have editing enabled, it can be read-only. The Esri distributed collaboration Q&A suggests this workflow is not possible. Question: Can I copy data from ArcGIS Online into my enterprise geodatabase? Answer: No. Destination layers within a collaboration must be hosted layers from ArcGIS Online or ArcGIS Enterprise. As I understand that answer: the sync must be to an “ArcGIS managed” hosted feature layer in Portal. It cannot be a “user managed” feature service with data in SQL." This workflow would publish a hosted feature layer on portal. As you mentioned it is not possible to have the hosted feature layer in ArcGIS Online sync to a referenced feature service in portal. If you want to have users in ArcGIS Online edit portal hosted or referenced feature services you may want to use share as reference. Portal for ArcGIS - About sharing feature layers as a reference: About sharing feature layers as a reference—Portal for ArcGIS (10.8) | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise Portal for ArcGIS - Frequently asked question about distributed collaboration: Frequently asked questions about distributed collaboration—Portal for ArcGIS | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise Hope this information was useful. Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Krystal Phaneuf, That is not an issue I have encountered before, I believe the upgrade process should preserve any collaborations. Were you able to successfully re-create the collaboration? If so I would recommend sharing any portal items with the 'new' collaboration workspace. Were there any known issues with the portal pre-upgrade? Was the collaboration functioning normally? You may want to check the portal index status before your next upgrade. Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Eric Kriener, There could be multiple reasons why it takes 20-30 seconds to return an image. If possible I would recommend making the request from REST on the ArcGIS Server machine. This would eliminate any network latency between client and server. How To: Execute a Export Web Map task operation from the REST endpoint Another main factor in this process is the location of the service source data in relation to ArcGIS Server. What is the data source for the map service (e.g. reference, copied, file geodatabase, enterprise geodatabase)? Is the map service cached or dynamic? Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Katherine Clark, If you want all users to have access to certain items you may want to share the items with your portal organisation rather that a group. You can also configure the gallery to show all items shared with your organisation. I don't know of any 'add all' function through the portal UI. You may also be able to script this functionality through the ArcGIS REST API. User—ArcGIS REST API: Users, groups, and content | ArcGIS for Developers You may also want to take a look at enterprise groups. Create groups—Portal for ArcGIS (10.8) | Documentation for ArcGIS Enterprise Thanks, Thomas.

Hello Thomas Illingworth, Unfortunately the error message you referenced is fairly generic. The error message tells us a connection was established between client and server. Then at some point after the connection was established the connection was closed. Troubleshooting Suggestions: Do these errors occur for a specific service? How is the service being used when the error message is generated (e.g. query)? What is the request path from the client to the server (e.g. DNS, FQDN, Web Server, Proxy). For example if the service is being accessed over a web adaptor hosted on IIS. I would recommend reviewing the IIS logs for error messages that closely match the timestamp for the ArcGIS Server error messages. Hope this helps! Thanks, Thomas.
