Dave, I am looking for the system design strategies document that has been discussed in this thread. The link is no longer correct.

Has anyone been able to make the processing extent work for the LAS to LAS tool? I have not been able to make it work. The outputted LAS files end up with the same extent as the original LAS files rather than what is set in the processing extent. My layer used as the basis for the processing extent is even in the same projection as the LAS files. LAS custom GP tools come within a toolbox that was published by ESRI. Processing extent is an environment variable that is supposed to be supported by the LAS to LAS tool. Below is a link to the toolbox. http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=d19c05deaf42447c9b4fc68fc4bb9c7a I am using ArcGIS Desktop 10.2.2.3552. Thank you for any help, Paul Lohr

Thank you for your help, gentlemen. Another user has marked this question as answered correctly. He did not post the question. I am not liking this new GeoNet system. For passers by, here is the summary of answers. I am pretty sure the bottom line is that layer-level visibility control is not available in ArcGIS Online under these conditions: when using a cached service, and connecting to that service at the service's uppermost level. Whether coming from a hosted service or an in-house ArcGIS Server instance, there is no layer-level visibility control if the service is delivered as a cache. If one connects to a layer of a service rather than the entire service, visibility control is available. If you access a cached web service at this level, cached tiles are returned. http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services/World_Imagery/MapServer/ If you access a cached web service at this level, a dynamic map service is returned. http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services/World_Imagery/MapServer/3 Can someone please point out where the above two statements are covered in documentation?

In this message I have been redundant in stating the problem and what is needed. Hopefully the redundancy makes the problem and solution more understandable. It is somewhat complex. This is what we are trying to achieve: be able to run an OR-type search against any column or columns in a web service layer using the ArcGIS.com map viewer, ArcGIS Collector (iOS), or ArcGIS Explorer (iOS). We are currently using ArcGIS for iOS on mobile devices and it would be better if the searches work there as well but I don't want to make that a distraction. The next two sentences outline the problem. Currently, by creating a map using the ArcGIS.com map viewer, we can (see Footnote A) setup one search for one column per web service layer. If we have a second column in that same web service layer that we would like to search against, it cannot be setup. We would like the ability to search any or all columns within the same web service layer.
I agree that there may be a need for advanced queries that return selected sets of features and not filter features out, like our current filter does, but there are no plans to expand the simple search box to handle this case.
Mike M., you call these advanced queries but they are simple. Our end users would use these searches frequently. In the ArcGIS Explorer Online days, it was a little more complicated for those of us who created the queries but simple for the end users. Here is one example of how we used to be able to setup and use multiple searches. We have an older web map that was built with ArcGIS Explorer Online. Image 1 and 2 below reference this web map. A map service layer in that web map has two columns that we would like to search against. Since the map was built with ArcGIS Explorer Online, we can search against either of these columns, just as we prefer (see Footnote B). We can search either column in both ArcGIS for iOS or in ArcGIS Explorer Online. What is key here is we have two searches setup against the same web service layer. This cannot be achieved in the ArcGIS.com map viewer.
Thus, it doesn't support an interface where you identify multiple fields and an attribute value for each field. There is a filter layer option that allows you to do this, that filters the display to match the query.
The filter layer option is much more difficult to use than the old search functionality we had with ArcGIS Explorer Online. Our users will not use it...it is too complicated. Another problem is that the filter layer option does not carry through to ArcGIS for iOS, ArcGIS Collector, or ArcGIS Explorer. Even if it did, our users would not use it due to its complexity. We used to setup in ArcGIS Explorer Online did carry through to ArcGIS for iOS. That was a pretty good scenario.
Paul Lohr, If ArcGIS Explorer Online will work for you, you could use it. However, be aware that ArcGIS Explorer Online was retired December 2013, and thus is no longer under active development--no bug fixes or new capabilities are being added. Note, ArcGIS Explorer Online is not to be confused with our newer product, Explorer for ArcGIS.
ArcGIS Explorer Online no longer works as it should. ArcGIS Explorer Online does not support secured web services which we must use. Footnote A - I have one map service layer that the ArcGIS.com map viewer will not setup any searches against. Footnote B - Searches in ArcGIS Explorer Online have quit working at some point. There is an issue with the pop-ups. The user can no longer type in their search criteria. Image 1 Both of these searches (queries) run against the same web service layer. This is not possible with the ArcGIS.com map viewer. Image 2 This is the search dialog in ArcGIS for iOS for the same map that is shown above. Again, both of these searches run against the same web service layer. No longer possible to setup with the ArcGIS.com map viewer.

The limitation of being able to have one search per map is a pretty big limitation for us. This has been a limitation of the arcgis.com map viewer for quite a few years. I see that some of our maps will not allow any searches to be setup.

Are you sure about this, Anthony? You may want to look at the REST endpoint of a cached map service that has more than one layer. Copy / paste a layer's REST endpoint into an ArcGIS Online map adds only that layer. If the creation of a cache for a map service flattened layers into a single image tile, I would not be able to add one layer from a service to an ArcGIS Online map. I have tested this with 10.01 and 10.2.2. Paste the link below into an ArcGIS Online map then change the symbol so the polygons are visible. The issue with the symbol has nothing to do with the discussion. Pretty sure this is a cached layer. http://services.arcgisonline.com/arcgis/rest/services/World_Imagery/MapServer/3 Best I can tell, cached map services are not worth using because ArcGIS Online does not offer visibility control for each layer. ArcGIS Server delivers the layers separately, but ArcGIS Online does not take advantage of this. The workaround to this is probably obvious but requires a lot of effort.

Adding a cached service to an ArcGIS Online map results in not being able to control the visibility of individual layers. The entire service can be turned on or off. With a dynamic map service, I can turn layers on and off as needed. Is there a way to add a cached service to ArcGIS Online so that I can control the visibility of layers within that service? I am talking about a service coming from our ArcGIS Server instance and not a service hosted by ArcGIS Online. Thank you for any help, Paul Lohr ______________ GeoNet stinks. I am trying to use a date variable with select by attributes against a shapefile and am having a similar problem. Modelbuilder's date type variable reformats the needed date format that I type in...yyyy-mm-dd to mm/dd/yyyy. Of course this mm/dd/yyyy format does not work with a shapefile. The documentation states that SQL used against a date column in a shapefile needs to be formatted as date 'yyyy-mm-dd'. Working with ArcGIS Desktop 10.01, service pack 5. _______________ Please bring back the old arcgis forums.

Are you importing a shapefile into Microstation? Or adding a shapefile and DGN to ArcMap? If you know the coordinate system of both the DGN file and the shapefile, it should be possible to overlay one on the other. A little bit of detail and I may be able to help.

I had a similar problem but not quite the same. I had the same blank screen in collect features. FeatureAccess was enabled on the service. In Mobile Project Center, I removed and re-added the feature service, saved it, then re-published the project (to ArcGIS Server). Then I downloaded the mobile project again and tried to collect a feature. Now the proper content was showing up in the Collect Features part of the program.
