Arcmap will read an excel worksheet and you can create an event theme based on coordinates stored in the file. Right out of the help: http://help.arcgis.com/en/arcgisdesktop/10.0/help/index.html#//005s0000001w000000

Looking at the tool, it seems to be using the rectangular extent. How about this: Select your donut polygon in the data view and then right click on the layer in the table of contents and choose "Convert features to graphics". In the dialog for this, choose "Draw the converted graphics and draw the features". Select the graphic result (with the black selection arrow). Right click on the raster data layer in the table of contents, and choose DATA >> EXPORT DATA. In the dialog for this, under EXTENT in the upper right, select "Selected Graphics". This also has a "Clip inside" option which would work with your original polygon (the donut hole). Regards, Jim

I can not reproduce resizing the window and having the export name and options all disappear. Try putting the focus in the export window and typing shift + O (hotkey combination for the options dropdown). ALso, the lower right corner with the triangle of dots does nothing? Other options: 1) spend some time with tech support 2) get into the registry and try to reset that specific window settings (always a dangerous thing) 3) rename or delete the Normal.mxt - This will reset all windows, toolbars, and customizations to original install settings. Regards, and good luck! Jim

You can not get items in the data view to recognize items in the layout view. You could create a polygon shapefile that covers the area under the layout and under the scalebar, set the fill and outline to no color, and set the Feature weight in the label conflict tab to something other than 0 or None. Arcmap knows the feature is there (even though it is not visible) and should avoid placing labels there. Regards, Jim

I have not used the Area Solar Radiation tool. However, we do perform modelling with large datasets that often take days to run. We reduce the time to results by splitting the analysis into multiple "chunks", having multiple machines (or even multiple cores on the same machine) process the chunks at the same time, and then merging the results. Parallel processing. Just curious, how many processing cores does your machine have? If it has 10 cores, and 1 core is working this process, then it is maxed out at the 10% shown. Regards, Jim

Chris, Under the labels tab for the shapefile, select the dropdown box at the top and choose "Define classes of features and label each class differently." then choose "Get Symbol Classes", and arc will create 2 label class definitions, 1 for each symbol class you have created. Then, set the text symbology that you want for each class. Regards, Jim

If you have access to a clip tool, create the donut and use that to clip. See "Creating Donuts and island polygons" about halfway down this help page: http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.2/index.cfm?TopicName=Common_polygon_editing_tasks Regards, Jim

Open source software like Python is designed to be developed by a collaborative effort, with sharing of libraries. No programmer will redevelop code that exists if it can be avoided, but, as everyone else has indicated, proper credit should always be given. Simply look through the forums to see people sharing everything from snippets to complex algorithms and modules. Be satisfied that you have created something others appreciate and can use, but call anyone out who does not credit your portion of the work. Regards, Jim

The historic workaround to renaming a field is to create a new field with the name you want, calculate its value equal to the original field, and then delete the original field. All possible in python. Regards, Jim

Check the template properties for the layer you are editing. Begin your edit session, open the "Create Features" tab, right click on the layer, and select properties. Does the drawing symbol have an outline? if not, change the template properties. Regards, Jim

Two thoughts: If your map document has a coordinate system defined, any file with unknown units/coordinate system will be displayed using the map document's units. Check that the map document General tab shows units as unknown, and Coordinate System tab shows the Current Coordinate System as "No coordinate system." Perhaps you need to go in and delete any pyramid layers or files created during your previous session. Go to the folder in a regular windows explorer/file browser, and delete any files with the same name, but different extensions than your original image. (ie: if your original image was picture.tif, delete picture.aux, picture.ovr, etc). Regards, Jim

You can accomplish this with map books, specifically a strip map for your application. http://resources.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//00s90000002s000000 Regards, Jim

I do not understand. Why does a file contain the dbf? A .dbf should be a stand-alone table, that ArcMap can read without importing. Item 2, same question. Why are you trying to import a dbf from an arcinfo interchange format (.e00)? Typically, I have a file (ie: Well_File.dbf) that I select and add like any normal file, and then I can create an event theme based on the xy coordinates contained in the file. If the field type is not numeric, the xy fields will not be available for selection, but editing the field type (I use excel) will solve that. Regards, Jim
