The datum is the spheroid that the graticule is draped on. Your point will still be at xxx Lat and xxx Lon no matter what datum you use, so you will see no shift looking at graticules. The differences come into play when you mix and match datums, then you will see shifting and misalignment. Best Regards, Jim

Apologies for being unclear. I was asking more about the source of the boundary data. The image below has a detailed (green) and a generalized (red) county boundary shown. You can see where points located near the green boundary have the potential to be shown on the incorrect side using the generalized line. So, (not knowing what these boundaries represent or where they came from), is there another source for their delineation that may be a better representation?

It appears that your polygon data is very generalized, causing misalignment. Is there no other, more detailed, less generalized source for this boundary data?

I have had a similar issue. I created a tiled mapping service (basically a raster representation of the features) as well as a feature service. Set the tiled service to display down to a reasonable minimum scale (maybe 50,000) then have it turn off, and the feature service turn on from 50,000 as a maximum visibility scale. When zoomed out, you see the raster version, and as you zoom in past the scale limits, the features draw and become accessible. Best Regards, Jim

Your files are in different coordinate systems. You do not define a coordinate system to alter it, you need to reproject a file to alter its coordinate system. So, determine which file is in the correct location. Leave that one alone. If you know the coordinate system of the other, redefine it to that original system. Then use the reproject tool to translate it into the system you want. Best Regards, Jim

Assuming you are working in modelbuilder, you can parse the name from the file, and use a calculate Value to create the string subset, and then use that as an inline variable to create the output filename. see attached model for visual explanation. Note I have attached the OutName as a precondition to running the buffer tool, so the Calculate Value bit has to run first. Input is PA4450, the Parse Path extracts the name from the full path of the file. Calculate Value uses a simple bit of python to strip off the first 2 characters ("%InName%"[2:] ). Then I use the OutName variable along with the SegLote string to create the output filename. I have attached a graphic of the model and the model as a toolbox if you want to see the values. Regarding running your 3 processes, you can nest them in a single model. If they need to run in sequence, use precondition connections to dictate which order they execute. Best Regards, Jim

I like the overall design. Nice job. The fade transition could be smoother to eliminate the buffer ring look. I would like to see the descriptive reason for the map in larger text - you have the room for it. It is more important than the disclaimer, yet is given the same font / visual weight. Spell check this section as well. I like the triangle with the logos, but it looks a bit cramped to me. Perhaps narrow it so it has a bit of space in the margins. Fix the label overprints in the map, where black text blends into black boundary lines. Make the legend colors match the colors in the map. The transparency and underlying terrain color make the agency regions look different that what is portrayed in the legend. The red color in the overview map is overly prominent. When standing back and looking at the figure, it is the most visible item and pulls your eye there, rather than to the main display area. Make it a more subtle color. Make sure that all labels in this section are legible. Perhaps you could use a different line symbol for the Country boundary line between Afghanistan and Pakistan? Best Regards, Jim

Zach, this discussion was prior to ESRI's re-organization of their website. I am afraid I do not know off-hand how to access this data now. Regards, Jim

If you open the ArcToolbox, and go to Conversion Tools >> Excel, you can use the tool "Table to Excel". For adding xy, there is also a tool - Data Management Tools >> Features >> Add XY Coordinates Regards, Jim

Hello, Ken, WGS84 is certainly a mistake. The datum prior to NAD27 was NAD (north american datum), and it was based on Clarke 1866 spheroid. I feel that georeferencing by features to a newer (with a specified datum) map is a good solution, providing there are major features to do this with. The issue with this is these maps are not that accurate to start with. They were typically created with field survey and plane table geometry, and heavy use of cartographic license. Perhaps Melita Kennedy of ESRI can correct me / shed some more light on this. Best Regards, Jim

I often use a MOD() statement to filter with a definition query. For Example, mod(contour, 50) = 0 takes each contour value, divides it by 50, and if the remainder is 0, it keeps it. Makes for an easy efficient way to thin contours. Best Regards, Jim

I used your expression and dataset, and get this result. Seems fine. Perhaps this is a subset of the full dataset, and there is some other "illegal" characters in the attributes that is causing the formatting issue? Regards, Jim
