"Statistics" on columns in Map Viewer attribute tables is VERY handy. But they are only available for numeric fields. I very frequently find myself needing simple "statistics" for a categorical field. All that is needed is a list of the values in the column with a count of the records for each value.

Hi, I noticed that ArcGIS Pro exposes the actually attachments table. And the photo names appear to be an editable columns. So a simple geoprocessing task MAY be one way to accomplish what I need. But I haven't tried that approach yet.

Hi Travis, We've thought about that option. And that is what we may need to try as a workaround. But the existing photos are full-res on relatively new devices. So they are around 5MB each. This week I downloaded the feature class (with attachments) to an fGDB from a group layer in Online. Then I republished the feature class into its own layer in Online. For 897 point features with a total of about 2,000 photos. It took about 6.5 hours to republish the service from Pro. I'd prefer not to do through that again with the Python script. But if there was a way to reduce the resolution of the photo as I was renaming it and reinserting it, then it might be worth it. 😉 Thanks, Mike K

It would also be good to be able to use Arcade to calculate the intended file name for an attachment. For photos the name might be an asset name/code appended with a date/time or a date and an automatically incremented integer (for the sequence in which the photo was taken during the current data collection session).

Hi, We have a field data collection workflow focused on static points. At each point one or more photos will be taken each field season. The photos need to be easily extracted from ArcGIS for other purposes. To do this effectively, the photos must have an identifiable name. Photo1, Photo2, etc., don't work for us. I need to be able to calculate the photo name, such as: SITE1_2021_03_31_Num_01 This allows the photos to be useful in other work environments. Is there a way to do this? With Arcade possibly? I would rather not shift to Survey123 if I can avoid it. Thanks, Mike Koutnik

Wow. Great prompt by DanteLee. That inspired me to attempt JSON editing for a different case. Each feature (habitat project) can have multiple values for ecological type. To keep the feature class simple, and flat, we simply have a field for each type, and insert a 1 into the field if the feature has that ecological type. Then, we can count the number of instances of each type to see the overall representation of ecological types across all projects. So there isn't anything in the data to sort by. BUT, I was able to go into the JSON and simply change the order in which the sums for each field are presented. For instance: Here is a snippet of the original JSON: ... { "onStatisticField": "Island", "outStatisticFieldName": "Island", "statisticType": "sum" }, { "onStatisticField": "InlandPlant", "outStatisticFieldName": "InlandPlant", "statisticType": "sum" }, ... I simply changed that code to: { "onStatisticField": "InlandPlant", "outStatisticFieldName": "InlandPlant", "statisticType": "sum" }, { "onStatisticField": "Island", "outStatisticFieldName": "Island", "statisticType": "sum" }, Very easy and quick.

Hi, I have a group that I use to involve multiple collaborators across several organizations. The group is shared privately with specific users in these organizations' ArcGIS Online organizational accounts. Many of the group members are contributors and are their own subject matter experts. Ideally, we would like to create separate folders for each topic i the group. That doesn't appear to be possible. The next best option would be group categories. I set up one category and it seems to work fine. But it appears that only me, as the group owner, can assign a category to an item. What we really want to do is allow each content provider to assign the appropriate category to their items. Is this possible? We tried to do this during a web meeting today. But the other contributor doesn't seem to have the same ability to assign a category as me. I realize one can mimic this ability to an extent with tags. But tags are a bit more of a free-for-all. The "curated" aspect of categories is beneficial. Thanks, Mike Koutnik

Hi Luba, I will try to test this. But I had to do the workaround in the meantime to get the user going. And I don't want to confuse her with an invitation for another user when she's already working. Thanks, Mike Koutnik

I just experienced the same issue. I can't get anything to happen when I click on Enrich Layer. All the other Analysis tasks seem to work fine.

I am trying to understand what happens to an ArcGIS Online named user when it is deleted from our org. I'm asking because I recently deleted one, and now need to add it back into our org. But I can't. It apparently still exists, since I get a message saying it's not available to add to our org. And I can add that named user to a group. But I have to click on the option search for users that aren't part of our org. Any information about how deleted named users works is appreciated. Thanks, Mike Koutnik

A temporary staff member of ours left about 6 months ago. Now she is coming back for another temporary term. How can I reuse her old named user? I deleted her user name when her last term ended. But when I try to create a named user using the same user name a message says that named user is already in use. As a test, I tried to add the named user to group. I was able to find the named user. How can I reuse the old named user? I would rather not compromise our named user naming convention by just creating another named user for her. Thanks, Mike Koutnik

It is really handy to take a screen capture of some or all of the content in the Map Viewer for a PowerPoint presentation. Often, resizing the table of contents panel to allow layer names to fit on one line really cleans up the look of the legend. And you often need to resize the browser tab, or force the browser to full height, or fully maximize it, so you can get just the right presentation. It takes some fine-tuning to position the map content and the TOC to get both just right. But if after you've almost got the presentation set the way you want it, you resize the tab, force the browser to full height, or maximize the browser, the Map Viewer automatically resets the width of the TOC to something narrower than you want. That artifact occurs also when you have resized the TOC width while in full-height or fully-maximized. As soon as you un-maximize or restore the browser from full height, the TOC again shrinks to some pre-determined width. It would be really helpful to honor the user's choice of TOC width, always. And not reset the width when the tab or browser is resized, maximized, un-maximized, set to full height, or restored from full height. web map viewer #table of contents issue

Is there a way to "lock" a filter applied to an ArcGIS Online layer view so that other users can't change the filter? I need to be able to set up separate layer views for different users where they can't see others' records. Setting a filter on a layer view doesn't accomplish this since the user can just load the layer view in a web map and change or remove the filter. Thanks.
