I would say ... traditional GIS will continue to modestly grow but what will grow even MORE is GIS in non traditional fields. We will get back with you with more info after this chat. Thanks.

Dana - I would say first that I salute you for being interested in education - and be sure to look at http://geomentors.net - the geomentor program. Second, our team put together this STEM and GIS booklet - https://www.esri.com/library/ebooks/advancing-stem-education-with-gis.pdf STEM has definitely helped the promotion and use of GIS around the country and around the world. --Joseph K

Thanks Sharon. Actually there IS a data set on Starbucks that I have used ... here it is - http://www.arcgis.com/home/webmap/viewer.html?webmap=ec6fe7b6dacc4c91ba89f1eb7a9df217 You could bring it into Pro and run some spatial statistics, mean center, hot spot analysis, and so on. That might be a nice data set to use.

Michael - I wrote a book and write a blog on the importance of spatial data, and one of my posts might be helpful to you - Key statements about the importance of spatial data | Spatial Reserves I also have filmed a series of elevator speeches - in actual elevators, about the importance of GIS - geographyuberalles - YouTube I realize that it is a challenge though to help people see that the investment in GIS will pay off - but it will - and there are other resources we can suggest if the above are not useful. -Joseph K

Fariss - I think Nicole touched on this well with the statements about web GIS changing things - one of those ways is it is helping the non geo-GIS-enviro community get into spatial analysis. One set of activities I developed to help get them excited is here: https://community.esri.com/community/education/blog/2017/07/26/10-things-you-can-do-with-arcgis-online-story-maps-apps-and-spatial-analysis-workshops It includes story map activities, web mapping activities on migration, natural hazards, and more, and analysis in ArcGIS Online. There are other ways too - such as thearcgisbook.com - all the maps in it are clickable and interactive. --Joseph K

Yes, and one manifestation of that is Esri Maps for MS Office. You can go into Excel, click the ArcGIS Add on at the top of Excel, and map your data. The map goes into ArcGIS Online! Then you can use it there or bring it into Pro. --Joseph K

Andrew - I would say the 5 key trends in GIS are - 1. BIM - building information management; 2. 3D GIS. 3. Web GIS paradigm. 4. Citizen science, and 5. Enterprise GIS (throughout an organization.). Midway down this story map presentation of mine I have them listed - https://denverro.maps.arcgis.com/apps/MapJournal/index.html?appid=fb060544d4bc4d15a1b8bed38048859b --Joseph K
