Our Valentine’s Day release is here. One week ahead of time! Let’s have a look at what is new: Performance! The Survey123 app should load your surveys much faster now. The new version number is 1.2.49 and is available in the Google Play, Apple and Windows app stores. The performance boost also applies to the desktop: Windows, OS X and Ubuntu Linux. You should be able to create now surveys with hundreds of questions and have them loaded in no more than a few seconds. Average surveys with 20 to 30 questions should load instantly. Having the many Surveys you have shared with us has been key to get this straight. We noticed that some of you created surveys which used exactly the same relevant expression for many (say 5, 10 even 15) questions. With this update you will see a significant performance boost in these cases, but you can double the effect if you group all of these questions together into a group and apply the relevant expression only to the group. In this way, you reduce the computation needed to load the survey: you reduce loading time and save battery. We also saw some surveys with very long choice lists. Remember that it is always faster to display long choice lists using the minimal appearance. In some extreme cases we have seen choice lists with over 300 items. The winner in this category had a choice list with over 40 thousand elements. We want to handle these situations better. First, in the next update you will see even faster drop-downs. We are also exploring how to best provide auto-suggest capabilities, so people do not need to handle ridiculously big drop-downs. Fixes to Sharing & Download Data in survey123.esri.com: Many of you told us that sharing surveys and downloading their results through the survey123.esri.com web site was brittle. This turned out to be much harder than we thought but things should be much better now. We had to make some deep changes in the format of Surveys to get this sorted. For this reason, you will need to upgrade your Surveys. Do not worry, even if you don't your surveys will still work well with the new and old versions of the app. And if you upgrade your surveys, absolutely nothing should break. To upgrade your survey, you will need to download the latest version of Survey123 Connect for ArcGIS. Connect will detect if the surveys in your local computer need to be upgraded and show a warning in the Survey Gallery, like in the screenshot below. To upgrade, simply tap on the Survey and then click on the Upgrade button. This process will essentially make a call to your ArcGIS Online or Portal for ArcGIS to replace the format of your Form item. Once a Survey has been updated, sharing from the web site should work smoothly. Map Preview in iOS: This fix is specific to iOS devices (iPhones and iPads). The Map Preview is now showing again. We are now working on our next update, which is scheduled for the International Women's Day on March 8. As usual, we try to prioritize our work based on user feedback so keep your comments coming! The Survey123 for ArcGIS Team.

Hi Terry, I cannot think of a way where you can truly enforce a response sometimes and not others. I attempted to use the Constraint column, but with no success. May be someone else can figure the right way to do it, but in the mean time, I took a simple approach using a note that tells the user when the comment is mandatory. See attached XLSfile.

Hi Terri, technically, the Date data type in ArcGIS also includes the Time. So essentially, when you create a Date question in Survey123 for ArcGIS, both the Date and Time are persisted. When you add a Time question, the Date is also captured. The trick is that by default, some clients such as the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer will only display the Date and hide the Time. Fortunately, it is relatively easy to change this and show the Time as well. In your Web Map, open the Configure Attributes window, select the Start field and pick a Format showing the Date as below. At that time, the Show Time option will be enabled.

Hi Brian, we are progressively implementing the XLSForm specification. In this page you will find some details about what we currently support, and what we dont. http://survey123.esri.com/resources/XLSFormSupport/ Anything highlighted in yellow is still pending. In the short term, we are trying to implement 'likert' scales. If testing is positive, we may have that ready in early March. We are also looking at enhancing date questions as well. As you point out, the 'year' option would be very useful, as well as the 'year-month'. At the moment, with just the calendar control, it is very difficult to go back in time to birth dates for example. The 'Draw' appearance is a popular request as well. Some people have also suggested we implement 'annotate', so you could draw on top of a photo. All of the above are in our 'to do' list. We try to work on them as time allows and prioritizing based on demand. Below are a couple of links to our external Github repo where you can vote for Date-Year and Draw. Date - Year appearance · Issue #235 · Esri/Survey123Community · GitHub Signature Box Expansion to Sketch Box · Issue #168 · Esri/Survey123Community · GitHub We look at comments like yours in GeoNet as well as the public Github repo and our Tech Support logs to prioritize our work. Thanks for the feedback.

Hi, I looked at this today and found a workaround. See the attached XLSFile. I created Groups to consolidate the relevant expressions that were not working. This had a double effect: 1) The relevant expression executed correctly. 2) The Survey loading time was reduced (because fewer expressions needed to be evaluated). The above may help but still does not explain why this works in Android, Windows, Mac but not in iOS. Typically when I have seen this happening before it was due to case-sensitive issues (iOS is case sensitive for some things that the rest of operating systems are not). We will need to look into this a bit more closely, but I hope the workaround above works for you.

Hi Ernesto, here are a couple of things to look at: Images get persisted as geodatabase attachments. As such, you should be able to see them related to the features you create. If you add the Survey feature service into a web map, you should be able to see the attachments when you click on them to bring the popup. The exception to this rule is images within a repeat. The issue in this case is that the ArcGIS.com Map Viewer does not support displaying attachments on related tables. ArcMap however is able to see the images in this case (through the identify tool), once you download the data in FileGeodatabase format. When you add your feature service to the Web Map in ArcGIS.com, make sure you add it from your 'Contents' ta rather than through the link in the survey123 web site. When you download the data, you should use FileGeodatabase format, because otherwise the attachments do not get downloaded. If you do not see the attachments anywhere, then check with folks capturing data as they may be getting errors while sending the images from their phone. If the connection is not strong, large image uploads may fail. This is a common problem people have reported and we are working on a fix.

Hi Henrik, the issue is caused by the fact that the latest update of Survey123 works with OAuth. For an OAuth client to be able to register against Portal for ArcGIS, it is needed that the Portal has a unique ClientAppID registered in the portal. Since 10.3.1 shipped before Survey123, this ClientAppID is missing. Before OAuth was implemented in Survey123, you were able to login against your Portal and use Build-in users. Now with OAuth, Portal is not allowing Survey123 to connect. We are working with the Portal for ArcGIS Server team to figure how to resolve this. This problem will not occur with Portal for ArcGIS 10.4. Our intent is that you will be able to continue testing Survey123 Beta against your Portal 10.3.1. Will get back to this post with more comments as soon as we have a solution. Apologies for the inconvenience. Ismael

Hi Valerie, unfortunately not. The map in Survey123 for ArcGIS is static at the moment. Collector for ArcGIS does reflect new features captured in the map as you request. While Collector does not feature the same smart-form capabilities, the mapping aspect is more complete. Hope it helps, Ismael
