I am also seeing issues with the folder structure being wrong when adding data in Pro. One of my project folders (which is located on a network drive) is actually showing up on my C:/ directory. I am attaching screenshots to show. Also to note, is that that project folder which is mysteriously showing up on C:/ doesn't point correctly to the network location either. You can see in the screenshots that the folder "GIS" is a project folder that is supposed to point to a location on our network (L:), but apparently Pro thinks GIS = "C:/My Output Data" Screenshot 1 (Capture.jpg) = C drive according to Pro (notice the folder "GIS" is taking the place of "My Output Data") Screenshot 2 (Capture2.jpg) = Actual C drive (notice no "GIS" folder, presence of "My Output Data") Screenshot 3 (Capture3.jpg) = Project folders, note GIS folder in particular is showing the contents of "My Output Data" but its actually supposed to have completely different contents Screenshot 4 (Capture4.jpg) = Actual contents of "GIS" folder located on the network drive I think this particular issue (maybe unrelated to the original post?) is related to the bugs with Project Templates. I originally set the "GIS" Project folder up in my Project Template to point to a network location. When I open a new project with this template, it points to "My Output Data", and takes its place in my C: drive (in the Pro interface)... Not sure if this issue is related to the original post - might be two separate issues... Can anyone at ESRI reading this pass this along to support and get these two (related or unrelated) issues addressed? I honestly do not have 2-3 hours to submit a bug (submit, go back over it with support, have them replicate it, and finally get it reported). Ive gone through that process too many times already just with Pro, I dont have time for it anymore. We should be getting paid for all this QA/QC work we are doing for ESRI

I am running ArcMap for Desktop and ArcGIS Pro both at the same time. As I update or change data in a geodatabase while using ArcMap, these data do not properly update in Pro (even if they aren't currently part of a map in Pro). Its as if Pro sees the files and folders as frozen in time (when Pro was launched), and doesn't update them in real time. Example: I modify the attributes/fields of a feature class in ArcMap (even if it is not loaded in the Pro map, which if it was I would probably get a schema lock). If I then add that data to Pro it adds the old dataset as it was when Pro was originally launched - without the updated attributes I edited in ArcMap! There is no apparent way to refresh the folder or data in Pro, so it will update correctly. Its as if Pro isnt getting live updates to folders and files and doesn't recognize when those files are moved and modified outside of Pro. Another example: Iif I add or delete feature classes within a GDB outside of ArcGIS Pro, and try to add them - Pro still sees the old FC's even if they are gone. Trying to add them gives error "Failed to add data, unsupported type" obviously, the file isn't there anymore. The only work around is to close out of Pro and reopen (pretty big inconvenience if you are working with both software simultaneously - ie: Business Analyst in ArcMap and symbology/cartographic work in Pro) Bug or working as intended? PS: I should mention that you can, however, see new feature classes that were created. it's the deleted FC's that are still showing within the GDB, and current ones that were modified are not having those modifications update correctly.

Thanks Kevin, is there a way I can see the bug report for NIM101431. I searched on ESRI support but it came up with nothing. I would like to see the bug report, so I can understand if it pertains specifically to the Project Folder path issue, or the Project Template data packaging issue. This would be very helpful to see. Our organization has a maintenance contract if that makes a difference. Thanks again.

@Robert A Project Template will not only package whatever layers you have in your table of contents, but it will also package the data source as well (instead of just a layer that links to the source data). For instance, I have a custom basemap that I created with the Business Analyst USA national data, that I use as my basemap. If I have that basemap included in my Project when I export the Project Template, it attempts to bundle my entire basemap dataset into the project template! Changing the different settings in the Project Template pane does not make any difference. It will always bundle whatever data you had loaded into the Project Template, instead of linking it (like it should)... This shouldnt be happening (is it a bug?). Ideally, the project template should only bundle the layer that links to the source data - not bundle the entire source dataset as part of the template! Whereas in ArcMap, I can create a .mxd (as my template file) with the custom basemap already loaded, and can reuse that file over and over - the basemap data stays LINKED (obviously). Now, in Pro, you cant do this with Project Templates (which is really too bad and reduces the functionality we had in ArcMap). As a work around, I dont include my basemap in my Project Template, and instead have to manually load and configure my custom basemap every time I start a new project... Cumbersome to say the least. Also there is a bug with the Project Template that causes your Project Folder connections to have wrong paths after saving out a Project Template and re-loading it into a new Project. You have to manually fix these every time you start a New Project using that Project Template.

Hi Dan, Thanks for your reply. That is unfortunate that it consolidates all local data. With ArcMap we could just save a map as our template (with an included local basemap that was linked locally) and easily use that. We have 2 users in our office (me being 1 of them) and we both have the BA data saved/installed locally on our machines. A workaround was to just remove the basemap data from the basemap 'tab' and then create the Project Template. Once the template is opened, we will add it manually to the "Basemap" tab. I still think there should be a way to control whether data is packaged, or remains linked - even if its local. Just look at how easy things were in ArcMap, and how easy it is to create a template mxd for multiple users. Forced packaging local data isnt really useful or desirable in this case. Hopefully this is added to Pro as it continues to evolve. Thanks again o7

I am trying to Create a Project Template (Using Share=>Project Template) and it is packaging all of my Basemap layers to the Project. I want my custom basemap to be linked locally (like it is currently in the project), not packaged up. I have a custom basemap that I created with the 2016 Business Analyst dataset. The basemap data are stored locally on my C: drive and were added through Insert => Add Data button on the ribbon to my Basemap layer within the project. My project consists of a map (with custom basemap layer added), a custom basemap, and a layout (customized legend, map frame, etc). I am trying to create a template that incorporates these elements, so that myself and others can create consistent maps with everything already setup and ready to go. (This was very easy to do in ArcMap with a premade mxd) According to: Project package—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS for Desktop: "unchecking the Share outside of organization option is a good choice. Enterprise database data, UNC path data, styles, and connections in your map will be referenced, not copied, to the project package." However, even unchecked, creating a project template yields a folder size of 25GB. In fact, checking or unchecking seems to make no difference. Either way it still re-copies over my locally stored and linked basemap data into my templates folder...Why? So, asking the question again to ESRI staff that might be reading this. How do we create a project template that does not package the entire basemap/layers in the project, but simply links them to the local data? I would like to know exactly, in clear terms how to do this or if it not possible. In ArcMap, all I had to do was setup an MXD (with the basemap already added and linked locally and layout-legend, data frame-already created), save it on our network for other users to pull down and use as their map template. Is this not possible in Pro? Is that not the purpose of a Project Template? Why does it need to copy all of the data to a separate folder instead of linking it, and why cant we control whether a package copies these data or not? Is this a bug? I have attached screenshots of my settings. Obviously, as you can see by the 4GB folder size, its still packaging my basemap... Again, my project contains a Map, a Basemap, and a Layout, with the 2016 Business Analyst Basemap data all linked from my local C: drive.

I think Pro will get there in time. ArcMap as a 32-bit piece of software simply wont be sustainable in the long term. Its obvious, as GIS continues to work with larger and larger datasets, that a 64-bit platform is long overdue, and will be essential in the future. I like Pro, but its currently missing alot of functionality from ArcMap that is really needed to fully switch over (and is very buggy still). Is Pro ready as it stands today? No. Will it be in the next year or two? Perhaps. The official narrative from ESRI is that its not a replacement for ArcMap, and nor should it be in its current form. But I think that the writing is on the wall, and to think that ArcMap will continue in perpetuity as a 32-bit application, I really cant see that happening. Its clear to me that Pro will be the successor to ArcMap, but wont (and shouldnt) fully take over the reins until ESRI can get all the functionality of ArcMap (and Catalog) built into Pro. That will clearly take some time and patience for those of us ready to make the switch to Pro right now, but until then, ESRI will support both, and we will have to use both. I think its important as GIS users, to not get too 'married' to one version of software, and to be open to change with the caveat being that newer version of software must carry over functionality from prior software and not overly burden the user. It will take some time, but Im confident by the time ArcMap has seen its last days, that Pro will be everything we need and more. Lets hope so at least

All I would say is that there are other large, industry leading companies (rhymes with Moby) that also develop highly complex software that have little to no bugs at the time of product release. Perhaps it is my experience and expectations with those products that carry over to ESRI's products (and perhaps it is even an unfair comparison) but I am nonetheless constantly making comparisons between the two software suites and find that one is almost never released with any bugs, and the other still feels like a beta test, even years after release. That perception should be important to ESRI and resources should be allocated to ensure stable, well performing products at the time of their release. Just my 2c.

Ive reported two bugs related to this: #BUG-000099281 The Symbology pane in ArcGIS Pro does not get updated with the new symbology after making any changes to the symbology and importing the symbology from a layer file. #BUG-000099215 In ArcGIS Pro, the legend title text does not wrap and continues outside the legend frame. My expectation is that these bugs are going to get addressed and fixed in the next release (or the one after). However, looking at our MyESRI organizations support page, I see bugs that have been reported (for ArcMap/Business Analyst) dating back to 2013 that are still "In Product Plan" - which I take to mean that they havent been fixed yet. As a customer this is a little disconcerting. I sure hope that my time spent reporting bugs (and in the process, trying to create a better product for everyone) isnt just wasted time. To report a bug takes several hours out of my busy day to discuss and replicate this with ESRI support. If we are going out of our way to report these bugs yet they remain unaddressed, then whats the point of reporting them in the first place?

Hey Dan thanks for the reply! Yes I have read this page extensively and unfortunately the wrapping discussed on that help page doesnt seem to apply to the legend title, apparently. One would think that it would/should, but it either doesn't, or its not working correctly. Everything else wraps correctly (as you can see on the screenshots), but if the legend title needs to wrap, it messes everything up... As you can see, the layer Income Qualified Growth Rate: 75+ Households, does indeed wrap correctly, as long as the Title stays short enough to fit on one line. Do I need to submit a bug report for this do you think? Seems like a bug.

Hello, I cant seem to get the Legend Title in ArcGIS Pro to wrap. I have changed the resize behavior to "adjust columns" and checked the wrapping box in the Element:Legend pane. Everything wraps correctly as far as my legend elements go, but as soon as I add a Legend Title thats too long, it doesnt wrap and basically hides everything in my legend. Is this a bug or have I just not found the correct setting to control this? Legend titles always seemed a little sketchy even back in ArcMap, but I could usually get them to wrap correctly with some fiddling. In ArcGIS Pro this doesnt seem to be the case. I have attached 2 screenshots showing how when I have a short legend title, everything is fine, and another screenshot showing how the title refuses to wrap, and subsequently destroys my legend. Any tips?

5 minutes would be fast for me. I am exporting jpeg's @ 600 dpi and each one takes around 10 minutes. I am using full vector basemap (the one that comes with BA) along with various vector feature classes. This is on a fairly cutting edge desktop running 16gb ram, intel xeon 3.5ghz 8 core processor, NVME SSD 200gb So unfortunately, I dont think you are going to be getting any faster than what you have.
