HI gordon, I think you could achieve this using the generate near table tool and specifying closest five. I am curious though, how you will derive the tree diameter from this metric.

Th is a very interesting problem, although I don't have an immediate solution. I was pondering whether some use of Euclidean distance would be useful. I will be thinking about it.

Allison, since this is for web viewing, your resolution should be 72 dots per inch, and your physical size should be whatever will fit well for the screen, and to make the information legible. Then just multiply the inches size by 72 to get the size in pixels.

You know, just reading through this thread again, and I see you are using a point shapefile. Make feature layer only works on feature classes. And, yes, your workspace needs to be a GDB or a folder, not an MXD.

Any how, try doing something like this: " \"FID\" = ' + list + ' " To quote the ArcGIS help "In Python, strings are enclosed in matching single or double quotes. To create a string that contains quotes (as is common with a WHERE clause in SQL expressions), you can escape the quotes (using a backslash) or triple quote the string."

I don't really understand your select query. Why are you including the " + ? Don't you just want it to be the list? Perhaps I'm missing something.

Yes, Wan, it sounds as though you defined the projection of one or both data layers into the incorrect projection. What was the original projection of both layers? Remember: Define Projection tool sets the projection to whatever it was originally. You cannot change a projection here. Project tool changes the projection to whatever you choose. If you accidentally used the define projection tool, and defined the incorrect projection, you can use it again to define it to the correct one, then use the project tool to change it to something new. Does that make sense?

Another easy solution is a spatial join. Join the points to the polygon, polygon fields will be joined to the point table. Those points inside the polygon will take on the polygon attributes, and those outside will have null values in the polygon fields.

It seems like there is a problem with your indentation. Subsequent lines after the If and elif statements should be indented, shouldn't they?

I'm sorry, your screen shot didn't work! If your coordinates are lat/long, then they should be in degree. You would have to REproject to change it to match your other shapefile. Do you see? The program needs to know what the original x/y coordinates are. Once you have made a correctly spatially-referenced shapefile of points, you can use the Project tool to change it.

If your point x/y values are in lat/long, then you will need to pick geographic coordinates and then choose the correct datum. Here in North America we use usually use NAD 27 or NAD 83, but I'm not sure where you are.
