Thanks Atma. I did see that page during my initial research but disregarded it because it didn't specifically mention adding a content item from a loosely coupled ArcGIS Server via URL. With the benefit of hindsight I can see that the thumbnail example would have been useful despite it relating to a CSV file in that case. Thanks for all your speedy replies on the matter, very helpful.

Thanks Atma. I think your second link to the API reference is probably the same as I put at the bottom of my original question. My comment about not having a useful worked example on that page is I think still valid but thankfully the managing your content example has useful guidance on how to specify a path on my local PC for the thumbnail.

I have a map service (ArcGIS Server 10.2.2) containing a number of layers, each of which I want to add to my Portal (10.5) via the Python API. The server is not federated with the Portal. If I manually add the URL for the individual layer then it successfully creates a content item and automatically creates a thumbnail for me showing a snapshot of the data. However if I use the Python API to add the same URL into a different content item then a thumbnail is not generated. When I go to the content item in Portal it shows an error at the top of the page - see image below: This disappears if I click anywhere near it but returns again if I refresh the page. If I manually edit the thumbnail and upload an image from my PC then I don't see the error again. So I have two questions: 1. Is it possible for a thumbnail to be automatically generated for me when I create an item via the Python API? 2. If it can't be generated automatically then how can I specify an image file from my PC to be uploaded instead? Or can the image only be referenced by a URL? For info a sample of my code is below. layer_properties={ 'title':'Test thumb', 'description':Test description.', 'snippet':Test summary.', 'tags':test', 'type':'Feature Service', 'url':'https://myserver/mywebadaptor/rest/services/environmental/designations/MapServer/7' } myLayer = gis.content.add(item_properties=layer_properties) myLayer I've looked at the API reference here but there is no example for me to follow http://esri.github.io/arcgis-python-api/apidoc/html/arcgis.gis.html#contentmanager Thanks Gareth

Just as a quick addition to my previous reply. The related records option only seems to be available on about half of the different layouts in WebAppBuilder. Will be interesting to see if this functionality is a bit more complete in Portal 10.5.1.

Just one quick follow up. I assume it's necessary to register the UNC path for both server A and B with the site and in both cases make sure that the server path is set as the local D drive? That way it shouldn't matter if a publisher decides to put the data from either A or B into their mxd as the server will replace both references at the point of publishing. The alternative would be to make sure that a publisher only ever uses data from one server in their mxd?

Hi Jonathan. Thanks for this. I have managed to track down what the issue was. I hadn't completely set the permissions correctly on server B so I assume that when you try to register the data source it scans all machines in the site to make sure it can access that location. This explains why it worked if I put the UNC for server A in because that had the permissions set correctly. I think it would be useful to add something in to the guidance to say that if you're putting data on each machine to make sure that you use the local reference in the path and that all machines need to be set up correctly first. Regards Gareth

Hi Jonathan, That would seem to be the opposite of the advice given in the online help. http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/administer/windows/data-storage-considerations-for-an-arcgis-server-site.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_068E1B44CEDD4CC79CF96B1D78AF52D0 When you use a file geodatabase as a data source, you should place an identical copy of the file geodatabase on each GIS server machine. For example, in an ArcGIS Server site with three GIS servers, each GIS server should access its own copy of the file geodatabase. The GIS servers should not access the same file geodatabase over the network. I can see why it would be a lot easier to have a single copy that all server machines access but it's not a route we want to go down if the performance is going to suffer. Regards Gareth

I'm trying to follow the guidance in these documents regarding registering data in a folder for a multi machine site http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/administer/windows/data-storage-considerations-for-an-arcgis-server-site.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_068E1B44CEDD4CC79CF96B1D78AF52D0 http://server.arcgis.com/en/server/latest/publish-services/windows/overview-register-data-with-arcgis-server.htm#ESRI_SECTION1_015C666026144A7CBD9C17FD501F28FD I understand the concept of placing an identical copy of the data on every server machine but it's not clear how you are then supposed to register that data with the site. For example if I place a file geodatabase in D:\GISdata on machines A and B then how should I be registering these with the site? Ideally I want to be able to publish to the site from my local desktop PC a map service which references the data on one of the servers e.g. \\serverA\gisdata but then if it happens to be server B fulfilling a particular request it should go to its own local copy of the data, not the one on server A. I thought maybe that I could register \\serverA\gisdata as the Publisher path and then D:\GISdata as the Server path in the register data source dialog but it throws an error saying that it can't access that location. If I use the UNC path for both Publisher and Server paths it validates successfully so it's not a permissions issue and I have checked that the domain account running Server has read/write access. Am I missing something obvious here? If I just go ahead and register the server A path via UNC will the site automatically resolve this to server B when B handles a request or am I creating extra traffic and effectively making the copy of the data on B redundant?

We've got three map services that have already been cached, with total cache sizes of between 10-20gb each. There seems to be plenty of documentation and discussion around performance tuning to create the cache in the first place but I was wondering if there are any recommendations for service properties once the service has been cached. If I monitor the arcsoc.exe process for one of the cached services in task manager whilst I'm interacting with the service then there appears to be 0% CPU use, presumably because it doesn't have to do any work to render the image and just goes straight to the tile cache. Would this still be the case if we had say 50 users all hitting the cache at the same time? In this case would it make a difference how many instances of the service there are or is the work of dishing up the tiles being done by a different process entirely i.e. javaw.exe, the web adaptor or IIS itself? If it is still beneficial to increase the number of instances for a cached map service is this a case where low isolation could be used? I appreciate that there is potentially more risk of a crash bringing down all the instances within a process but gicen that the arcsoc shouldn't actually be doing much work is it a risk worth taking? I know ESRI recommend not using low isolation but why offer it as an option then? Is it really only of a benefit when RAM is in short supply on a machine? If for example I wanted 9 instances in total of a cached service would it be better to have 9 arcsoc.exe processes in high isolation or 3 processes with 3 instances each in low isolation? Any thoughts appreciated Regards Gareth

In my limited experience with Portal 10.5 they don't appear to. I have a web map containing a layer with related tables that works as expected in the web map or in an app built using the Portal WebAppBuilder. I've then built a map series story which uses the same web map and the related tables option is not showing. If I embed the WebAppBuilder app within the story map the related records do show.

Ok if I'd read the instructions a little more closely I would have noticed that it is still visible for administrators. http://server.arcgis.com/en/portal/latest/administer/windows/configure-living-atlas-content.htm So if I log in as a non-admin user the Living Atlas content has gone but I still get quite a few references to the Living Atlas which I think looks a little messy. For example in the Gallery the default tab is the Esri Featured Content (doesn't seem to be an option to change this) which is just empty so why have the tab in there at all if I've chosen to disable the Living Atlas? Then in the map viewer the Browse Living Atlas option is still available under the Add button but returns nothing so why not just remove it from the interface? Ditto for having it listed as one of the options to search for?

We've recently done a new installation of Portal 10.5 on Windows and most things are working as expected. The one exception is the Living Atlas Content which we'd like to completely remove from the Portal as it will potentially distract our users from our organisation's content. According to the instructions it should just be a case of going to My Organization > Edit Settings > ArcGIS Online and then making sure that the box next to "Access Living Atlas content in your portal" is unchecked. However we've tried this a couple of times and the setting seems to have no affect - the content keeps appearing in the Gallery and Map/Scene viewers. I have also tried enabling the content and then disabling, but get the same result. Before I log it with ESRI support I just wanted to see if anyone else had experienced a similar issue? Thanks Gareth

Thanks Niccole. I don't know for sure if the Portal had been upgraded but that is quite likely as the store and index counts weren't matching. I have run the reindex tool and the missing template is now available in the application template list. Thanks for your help on this, much appreciated.
