What's the benefit of using BuiltinCube? The way I would do what I think you're doing is to use innerRect() followed by extrude().

could you scale in one direction so it's more square to prevent two cubes being used or use the split operation to trim off either end so, again, you end up with a square? or maybe workout the threshhold at which you get two cubes and insert a different object instead? have you tried the alignScopeTo... operations to fix the up direction?

This is really annoying...... I used to have my TOC, results window and sketch properties window in a single tabbed pane on the left of my screen. I accidentally did one bad click and it's all been ruined, these windows now tile across my sceen taking up half of my view. How can I get them to tab together again, I can't find the setting? Thanks in advance.

It sounds like.... The CGA creates a box from 6 squares, each with 4 vertex. The shape creation tool makes a proper box that is a coherent box. On export (collada - i haven't looked at other formats) there are options for "vertex precision" and "merge vertices within precision" - I guess that playing with these can help reduce vertex count.

The handle on the bottom you're picking up is the original shape (building footprint). CGA doesn't change the original shape it simply builds on top of it, using it as a seed. Use the toggle shapes button and it will disappear (F11). Theres a tool to "Convert Models to Shapes" if you wish to modify your CGA models using handles.

Just tried exporting to gdb and my extruded buildings look ok in ArcScene. I wonder if you have a bad setting in ArcScene. Have you checked the settings in the 'Base Heights' tab in the layer properties? If you haven't, try increasing the value in the 'Factor to convert layer elevation values......' setting.

If you import point shapefiles they are drawn in CE as 1m squares, you could then use the s() operation and the rotate() operation to proceedurally draw the rectangles you want. There may be other ways............

FYI - this has been confirmed as a bug: BUG-000084296: Skeleton Subdivision operations in CityEngine produce duplicate geometries irrespective of parameter settings. Because the bug has only just been raised it's not yet known if it will be resolved in the next release of CE.

hmm ok I'll consider that. Prety sure my rules aren't complex - maybe not written in the most efficient way but no imports. I have 18 attributes in my rules - about half are object attributes that come from my shapefile, the others are user defined or rule defined.

Hi Chris Can you explain what to change - I've found the .ini file but it's not obvious to me what to change. Do you think changing this memory help me? I've been having some small performance gripes as per this thread. Re: CityEngine performance expectations?

Thanks, that's helpul - it certainly seems to help when doing a select all. But even when I just select a single shape, with the intention of changing attributes, the inspector can take a while to refresh and I get a big black square instead of the attributes - is this normal, can I do anything to help it?

What should my expectations be of CE performance - I'm using 2014.1? I have Windows XP x64 2003 SP2 Intel Xeon 2GHz 16GB RAM (24 cores) NVidia Quadro K5000 (4GB) I find that it copes ok with the graphical hard work - export models, generate, pan, zoom tend to work tolerably. However things like crtl-A to select all can take a couple of minutes, as can accessing an attribute in the Inspector window (I just see a big black square where all the attribute should be until it refreshes). I'm currently trying at export 3500 shapes to a shapefile and I've been waiting 35min so far.....still waiting....nearly finished. I've had problems before with other things in CE but they seem to have been fixed with a change to my network profile, so I'm not sure if this slowness is my machine or CE.

I don't know about preference settings but if you're running the subdivision tool you can do that via python and build in a conversion factor.
