Hi all, This issue has been fixed and will be included in the 10.6.1 release of ArcMap. In the meanwhile there is a workaround using styles: From within ArcMap open the 'Customize menu' -- 'Style Manager' Select your user style and double click 'Maplex Labels' On the right hand pane right click -- New -- Label... In the dialog that appears click 'Placement Properties' Select Polygon from the 'Feature Type' drop-down at the bottom. Navigate to the 'Label Density' tab and enable 'Remove Duplicates' Enter the desired value into the 'Duplicate Values' dialog. Ok out, give your new style a name, then close the 'Style Manager'. Open the 'Label Manager' from the labeling toolbar. Select 'Label styles' from the bottom-right of the dialog. The style you just created should be at the top of the list, double click to apply it. This should set the properties of the label class to the properties set from the Style Manager. I hope this helps. Samuel Troth Esri

Hi Darren, Just FYI in case you hadn't come across it. We have functionality within the Maplex Label Engine to place Key Numbered lists. By specifying the properties of the Key Number group at the map level (similar to using Abbreviation Dictionaries) and then assigning the label class to use the Key Number list in the labeling properties one can have the label engine place an index digit upon the feature (when there isn't space for the full label) and place a list of index numbers wherever it can on the map.

As you have already figured out there is no magic 'place all labels perfectly' button in ArcMap or ArcGIS Pro. To get the most from the Maplex Label Engine you need to fully utilise the placement properties and try the options that Ted has suggested. I will add that there is a preferred offset setting in Maplex where you define the preferred offset as a value and specify a range within which the label is allowed to place. See below for where this option is in ArcGIS Pro. Hope that helps.

Hi Rawan, Thank you for getting back to me and providing more information. As far as I can determine your problem is the use of the 'Never Remove' property, because you have that checked on the built-up area label is happy placing overlapping the well known site label. What happens when you uncheck 'Never Remove'? Also what version of ArcMap are you using? Regards, Sam

Hi Megan, Just to summarise; you have a polygon layer which displays the labels correctly. You start an edit session on this layer. You use the split tool to create a new polygon from a subdivision of an existing polygon. The old polygon continues to label fine but the new one is displaying no label and also no 'unplaced' label. Unless I've missed something I think this is a bug in ArcMap. Could you log it with tech support so the issue can be looked at? Regards, -Sam

Hi Rawan, What kind of layer is the 'Well Known Sites'. I can see it has no symbology, is it a point, line or polygon layer? My next question is can the label be placed elsewhere? or do you only want the 'Built Up Area' label to place?

Are you using Maplex in the screenshot? There is a max number of lines setting in the Maplex stacking options. Check that because it defaults to 3.

Hi Paul, Continuous development on the Maplex engine means that there might be slight changes to improve placement quality between versions but nothing to the extent you are describing. Could you provide some further details of your issue? Screenshots of before and after if possible and any other information you think might be useful. thanks

Hi Amanda, This isn't possible in the current software. The labeling properties are not applied to the text in the key number list as the key numbering is the property (fitting strategy) being applied. There may be scope for further enhancements to the key numbering in Maplex, depending on user demand. Regards, Sam

Hey Aaron, labeling is not supported for 3D layers in ArcGIS Pro, that's why you're seeing this grayed out.

Hey Aaron, Regarding weights, Pro should have the same functionality as ArcMap 10.3. The weights dialog can be accessed through the labeling ribbon, map section, more drop down. Is this not what you're seeing? Regards, Sam

Hey, it looks like your problem is the 'Label largest only' option. This option limits the labeling engine to only labeling the largest part of each polygon. Is that the case? What version of ArcGIS are you using?
