Hi David. What I built in my environment is a separate Portal instance for PUBLIC access; then established a collaboration between my INTERNAL Enterprise platform and the PUBLIC side. This allows me to create a way to push/expose the services/functions that I want outside my enterprise while letting the ESRI stack handle the proxying of the requests.

That is good; un-federating and re-federating is a dicey. I accumulated a lot of experience in this unfortunately.

You'll need to go to https://portalserver:7443/arcgis/sharing/rest/portals/self; then to the "Servers" option; from here you will see each of your registered AGS servers; you can select to Unfederate it from here. The REST Admin interface is a very powerful place; be very cautious and conscientious of what you are trying to do.

Hi @DavidMcCorkindale1 Yeah I heard about that one; but that is also centric to the solutions area and volatile to changes in that area. My Idea is for a CORE widget that can be used in any branch-versioned feature dataset. I had to have ESRI Professional Services help me build a custom-widget for a project implementation but as this is a architectural direction ESRI is going they need to provide basic tools to support the platform.

Do you have a link to this? Even the UC sessions on Geocoding last year didn't actually say anything I can recall along that line...

The Error would only be for your initial config; once that is in place you remove the record form your IIS Binding and your LMHOST file. And you are able to go into the PortalAdmin page and update the URL for the Web-Adaptor correcting this alias. I know it sounds odd; but it worked for me in both my STAGING and PROD systems when I deployed 10.8.1; wasn't a problem with 10.6.1 so something was updated/changed in the WebAdaptor logic for the portal.

Steve, going into your 2nd IIS machine and change the name in the bindings for where your WebAdaptor is configured; then use this URL to configure it. You might have to update your lmhost file to use a temp/alternate DNS for this binding.

I had this exact scenario happen to me; what I had to do was on the 2nd server bind it to a different URL temporarily; when ran the Web-Adaptor Config process; then once the connection was made change the binding/url back. Then I went into the PortalAdmin and did a Update on that Web-Adaptor record to reflect the URL.

The push by ESRI to use of Branch-Versioning in the Services-Based architecture means more use of branch-versions, currently there is no widget available nor url-parameter to allow the selection of a specific BRANCH for work. This would be either dropdown that you can assign to a given feature-service and would list all active versions; or a url/query parameter like &version=MYVERSION

Yes this is possible (and supported), I have deployed several stand-alone portals that I then established Collaborations back to my production systems to better support a N-Tier security architecture. You just need to remember that the typical ESRI support call expects you to have the "FULL STACK" architecture; the more you get to a distributed/enterprise architecture the more complex support can become dealing with them.

So I am curious if it might have to do with how you are deploying patches? Are you just running the Microsoft tool or using another method? You might consider scripting the process with Powershell; and then before running the scripts on your machine Stopping your services then doing a reboot after the patches complete letting the services restart.

ArcGIS Server to authenticate using AD requires a psuedo-LDAP interface; the ability to handle SAML/XML isn't available at the AGS layer; only in Federated Portal to ArcGIS Server.
