Interesting idea. I'm wondering if this could be done using Attribute Rules where you compare the feature(s) being edited to an intersecting polygon (the Protector Polygon!) and if the features intersect, throw an error that the desired edit is within the protection polygon and thus cannot be completed. Geometry Functions | ArcGIS for Developers If this could work, Arcade featuresets will be supported in ArcGIS Pro 2.3. Paul Barker has written a couple of blogs about using them: What’s new with Arcade: Taking a stroll through FeatureSets (Part 1) What’s new with Arcade: Taking a stroll through FeatureSets (Part 2)

Erica, I see what you're saying. In my gif below, the first part demonstrates the problem. i.e. Copy from one map/Paste into another map places the pasted layer at the top of the Contents. Note that drag and drop from map 1 to map 2 will result in the behavior you described from Catalog View (right-click > Add to Map 2) wherein the layer is dropped at the top of layers of the same geometry type. That may be the best way to do this if working within the single project. When working between instances, you're actually able to drop the layer exactly where you want in the Contents. So open the same project as [Read-Only] in a second instance and you can do this: In summary, what would be nice is if: 1. When you Copy from one map and paste into another map, it should respect geometry type and drop the layer into the Contents with same geometry. 2. When dragging/dropping between maps within the same project, we need the ability to drop the layer exactly where we want it (that might get trickier because the pane needs to switch, but that is the request) Am I interpreting this correctly? I hope the little demos and thoughts help. Cheers

Hi Cole, I'm sorry that you're experiencing crashes. Error reports do not go into a black hole - here is more information about what happens when you submit an error report: Report software errors—ArcGIS Pro | ArcGIS Desktop And a blog that we just posted this morning: ArcGIS Desktop Error Reporter Learns Its Manners Now, for your .dmp files from Pro. Can you go to C:\Users\username\AppData\Local\ESRI\ErrorReports and send me the most recent .dmp files? You can ensure that they're from Pro and confirm the date and time from the filename. Send to [email protected] Thanks

I think it would be good to investigate this further through a Support case. I added the Fires layer from a SQL database and then applied a definition query to the layer. Then I removed the connection to the database in the Catalog Pane and the layer doesn't disappear: It seems like for now, this would have been more appropriate for the ArcGIS Pro or Geodatabase spaces rather than Ideas.

Thank you for the details. Is that a built-in geoprocessing tool? Can you send me the link to the tool's web help? Thanks

Hi John, I understand that you say sometimes you don't get the error report dialog, but when you do, are you submitting the report with your email address and description? See ArcGIS Desktop Error Reporter Learns Its Manners I see you mention 10.6 and 10.6x. If you're in 10.6.1, we've been seeing many customers affected by the issue that is fixed by ArcGIS 10.6.1 (Desktop, Engine, Server) Buffering Degenerated Polygon Patch If you haven't installed that patch, it would be worth a try.

So it would be a way to get "map time" to be able to plug it into Arcade expressions, right?

It seems like the request would be specific to scripting? But you can already write checks like this into a script... So is the request to bake an 'if exists' check right into the Delete Field—Data Management toolbox | ArcGIS Desktop tool?

Hi Haytham Suleiman Can you provide some clarification on the issue here? You have a layer with a definition query. What is the source of the layer? Feature class/standalone table (from file gdb, enterprise gdb, ...), shapefile/standalone table in folder... What connection are you removing? Project connection to a database? Project connection to a folder? Is the behavior specific to having a definition query applied to the layer? I just added a layer to a map in Pro (from a file gdb through a folder connection), applied a definition query to the layer, then removed the folder connection - the layer remains in the map. Please provide more details, maybe with some screenshots so that we can understand the issue. Thanks

Yes. Local data on C. Yes, "many factors at play" which is why we need to have more details:) Rick Gonzalez we want to help, we just need some more info, and maybe data. Probably best to move it off this thread, so email me directly and we can circle back to close the loop here.

Rick - also, if you're willing/able to send data and steps directly to me at [email protected] we can probably take a quicker look. Email me and if we need to set up an ftp file transfer site we can. Thanks

Hi Rick, I think all would agree that something that takes 5 minutes in ArcMap should probably take 5 minutes or less in ArcGIS Pro. So there is something going on that needs to be investigated. I think that Michael's idea of working on this with technical support is a good one as there could be many factors at play. I was curious to see if this is a "generic problem", meaning that it could be reproduced with any data. I created a random raster of 52 miles X 32 miles and cell size 61 meters (about 200 feet). I also created 1000 random points and ran Sample in ArcMap and ArcGIS Pro. Results: ArcMap = 1.36 seconds ArcGIS Pro = 1.22 seconds I don't think there is anything inherently slower about this operation in ArcGIS Pro. But it would be valuable to investigate the specific performance issue you're experiencing with technical support so that we can understand what's happening.

I guess I don't understand your question. Today, you can create rules in an enterprise gdb that are triggered for fields when edits (insert, update, delete) are made... It would just be the same thing but would work in file gdb. When set up for a file gdb, I think the expectation is that the rules would not work across the platform (just like Attribute Assistant).
