Marie: Either of the free online or desktop versions would work for you. They vary a little in their functionality. Both will allow you to connect to online services you have listed, above. You will just need to learn how to find and connect to the services in each application. I would start by searching ArcGIS Online Gallery here: http://www.arcgis.com/home/gallery.html Then you can connect to services like this one in either application: >National Wildlife Refuges http://www.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=cc84e254e78d4f958c7ee0e9c8676a5f Map Service = http://gis.fws.gov/ArcGIS/rest/services/FWS_Refuge_Boundaries/MapServer

Ellen: Is caching an option for you? If I am correct, a Mosaic Dataset in an FGDB with TIF and Overview files would be considered "dynamic" and not the fastest image service web option. If you use your FGDB/MoDat to build an Image Service that uses cache tiles, you will have a fast image service and, from my experience, the cache tiles consume much less space on the server than the TIF files do.

Prakshep: Since you don't have access to ArcGIS for Server, it sounds like you should look at how Esri's ArcGIS Online might work for you. Depending on the volume of data that you are sharing with staff, you could secure and host your data up in ArcGIS Online (subscription necessary) and publish maps for your users there, or consume your ArcGIS Online data/maps in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop. We have published maps in our ArcGIS Online subscription that contain map services from our ArcGIS for Server v10.1. We have configured attribute pop-ups for map service layers in the online published map. When we add, remove or rearrange data layers in the table-of-contents of our map service source MXD and then refresh that map services on our server, the attribute pop-ups in the online map are all messed up. It's as if the REST layer order is fixed in the online map and if layers are later added, removed or rearranged in the source service, the online map can't keep track of the refreshed REST layer order. Is this what's happening?

Siew: Open ArcCatalog and navigate to the file geodatabase location. Right-click on the FGDB and choose the Properties... option. In the attached screenshot, I used ArcGIS 10.1 to look at an older FGDB and can see the version in the Upgrade Status area of the Database Properties.

ALERT: Currently, using >Add Content >GIS Services, AGX2500 does not see secure GIS services from ArcGIS for Server 10.1, so one needs to use AGX1750 to connect to a secure 10.1 server with their UN/PW and â??Shareâ?? the connection out as an NMC file. AGS2500 users can then import that NMC file and will get challenged for a UN/PW and will see the secure map service. However, AGX1750, although it can connect to secure 10.1 services, does not challenge the end-user for a UN/PW when importing an NMC file containing a secure 10.1 service. The server connection appears in the TOC as a broken link. So, today, our GIS shop needs to maintain a working version of AGX1750 to connect to secure ArcGIS for Server 10.1 services and share service connections as NMC files and we need to install AGX2500 on end-user machines for them to use secure NMC files.

I, too, am using ArcGIS for Server 10.1 with secure map services. When I attempted to add a secure map service directly to an ArcGIS.com map via the >Add >Add Layer from Web button, the attempt failed. I was informed by Esri Tech Support that I needed to log into our subscription, go to the My Content area, click on the Add Item button and add the secure map service to a My Content folder. Then, you can open your map and Add the secure service from your content folder. Tags/keywords added to your map service make it easy to find using the Search for Layers option in the map.

While migrating map services from ArcGIS for Server 10.0 to 10.1 I discovered something interesting that I thought important to share. We use many of our map services in ArcGIS Explorer Desktop 1750. When served from AGS 10.0, these map services appeared and performed properly in AGX Desktop. When we migrated (re-published) our map services to AGS 10.1, some of our map services did not work in AGX Desktop (but did appear and work in ArcGIS Online). We found that if a featureclasses in the published map contained a definition query and the definition query contained a 'space' in the wrong place, the map service would not appear at all in AGX. This only holds true for services on AGS 10.1. For example, this definition query works on AGS 10.0, but not 10.1: (Milepost %10= 0) AND Date_End IS NULL This definition query works on AGS 10.1: (Milepost%10= 0) AND Date_End IS NULL The space between the field name and the percent sign was the problem.

Within my ArcGIS Online for Organizations subscription, I am consuming secure map service from my ArcGIS for Server 10.11 by using the '+Add Item' in the My Content window. I then create and save an ArcGIS.com map that contains the secure map service. Finally, I Share my map with a Group. If I don???t also Share the secure map service to the same group, the map cannot display the secure map service. Members of the group now see two items in the Group folder and are confused which to open. I wish that the ???publisher??? of a map could add an unshared secure map service item from a My Content folder to an ArcGIS.com map and then share the map (with map service) to a group. This would keep the one or many map services behind the scenes and less distracting/confusing to group members. The ???sharing??? of the map and its content is the key to map service access.
