GIS Day is here! GIS Day is a day where GIS professionals all around the world can join a GIS event in their community, hang with other GIS pros, network about what they’re working on, and get inspired by their peers. On GIS Day, we encourage people of all ages, in all locations, to share GIS and let others experience it. One great way to do that is by involving your audience in some data collection. Seeing your own point on a map and used in some way brings a different connection to GIS. If you’re a GIS Pro with a kiddo in your house and you’re looking for a fun GIS Day activity to get your kids outside – look no further! We’ve got just the fun mapping activity for you. Trees! What better time of year to get your kiddos outside, mapping, and exploring the natural environment than fall (although any time of year is a great time of year to explore the outdoors). To enable anyone, including kids, to try data collection, we have organized a tree data collection project that anyone can participate in. Get started outside and have some fun! Do you see any trees? Where? How many, and how big? Trees are different based on where you are, and they help your community and the environment. So, let's map trees and collect information about them to see how they look around the world. Our tree study uses GIS (geographic information system) technology to enable users (and kids) to view data easily. It has an interactive, digital map that is easy to use! You have the ability to interact with the dashboard, click on different items, and even move the map. GIS is all about gathering data, working with it, and understanding it based on its location and the data around it. There are many ways to celebrate GIS for people of any age or any industry. If you’re looking for more activities to do with your kids on GIS Day, check out our GIS Day resources. Happy Mapping!

Learn how ArcGIS supports the UN Global Biodiversity Framework The Actionable Conservation Science webinar series focuses on on applying GIS to monitor and track progress toward the goals and targets of the post-2020 UN Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF). The GBF includes many targets that are inherently spatial and require a geographic approach. Invasive species are a major threat to ecological integrity. Understanding their spatial extents and habitat characteristics is critical for effectively managing and restoring landscapes, as is the focus of UN GBF Target 6. This third webinar of the series, hosted on November 15, 2023, showcases how ArcGIS brings a scalable and integrated approach so that modeled results can be shared with collaborators and decision-makers. Incorporate climate resources using ArcGIS into your classroom Understanding the exposure of people, property, and infrastructure to climate-related hazards is the first step in building resilient communities. To support this process, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the Department of the Interior, and the US Global Change Research Program have partnered to develop the Climate Resilience Information System (CRIS).] In this webinar hosted on November 14, 2023, we discussed how these portals can be leveraged to analyze and communicate climate-related hazards from the national to local level. By watching this webinar, you will have the opportunity to: Gain knowledge about the capabilities of the White House climate portal using ArcGIS. Access useful resources to help you get started with using ArcGIS for climate research and teaching. Access the recording >>

National Geographic MapMaker equips teachers and learners with carefully curated, standards-focused, National Geographic Explorer-inspired maps, data, and activities for many subjects and grade levels. Designed specifically for teachers and students, MapMaker is free and runs on lightweight devices such as tablets and laptops. If you’ve had the chance to explore with MapMaker and find yourself with questions or suggestions for additional data or capabilities that would improve the tool for you and your students, we want to hear from you! Esri Community is a global community of Esri users where you can find solutions, share ideas, and collaborate to solve problems with GIS. One of the many benefits of Esri Community is that both your peers and Esri employees answer questions and provide feedback, so you’ll hear from other educators who understand your needs. You can easily ask questions or provide ideas and feedback about MapMaker using the Questions and Ideas boards within Esri Community. Boards in Esri Community are a great tool so you can subscribe to a specific area of interest (like MapMaker) and be notified when there are updates to that board. Our MapMaker boards are very easy to locate in Esri Community. From the home page, select ‘All Communities’ in the top bar. Go to ‘Industries’, then select ‘Education’. From the main ‘Education’ community, select ‘K12 Instruction.’ And there you will find the National Geographic MapMaker Questions and Ideas boards: Got Questions? The NatGeo MapMaker Questions board is a safe space to ask questions about how MapMaker works or get help if you’re stuck. . If you’ve asked a question, you can expect to receive a response from one of our team members in a timely manner. When you’ve received a response to your question, you will receive a red notification (upper right of your screen) within Esri Community. Once you have received a response to your question, you may notice a ‘green’ checkmark next to the response to your question. This means, that the response or ‘solution’ is verified for your question. Got Ideas? The NatGeo MapMaker Ideas board provides a safe space for you to help shape the future of MapMaker. Whether you’re giving kudos to other community members’ ideas, adding your use case in the comments, or submitting original ideas, we value your contributions! Your feedback is important to us and we take it seriously. UpVoteing or Kudos on Ideas Boards are for if you feel "the idea would add value." Internally at Esri, we look at total number of kudos to determine what we can implement. You are not limited to only adding kudos to your top Ideas. If you think a particular idea is valuable and would provide a better experience for you in the application, give it a kudo, even if it is lower priority for you personally. Kudos are a great way for Esri to gauge Idea popularity, so we can prioritize changes that will impact more people who use our products. The Esri Education team members are subscribed to idea exchanges and labels so that they can keep a finger on the pulse of what you are requesting and build updates that best meet your needs. We love hearing from you about how to improve our products. To learn how to submit a valid idea, please review the Submission Guidelines. To reiterate, the NatGeo MapMaker Questions & Ideas boards are designed for you to connect with us about concerns or updates you would like to see in MapMaker. We look forward to hearing from you!
