GIS Day is here! GIS Day is a day where GIS professionals all around the world can join a GIS event in their community, hang with other GIS pros, network about what they’re working on, and get inspired by their peers.
On GIS Day, we encourage people of all ages, in all locations, to share GIS and let others experience it. One great way to do that is by involving your audience in some data collection. Seeing your own point on a map and used in some way brings a different connection to GIS.
If you’re a GIS Pro with a kiddo in your house and you’re looking for a fun GIS Day activity to get your kids outside – look no further! We’ve got just the fun mapping activity for you. Trees!
What better time of year to get your kiddos outside, mapping, and exploring the natural environment than fall (although any time of year is a great time of year to explore the outdoors). To enable anyone, including kids, to try data collection, we have organized a tree data collection project that anyone can participate in.
Get started outside and have some fun! Do you see any trees? Where? How many, and how big? Trees are different based on where you are, and they help your community and the environment. So, let's map trees and collect information about them to see how they look around the world.
Our tree study uses GIS (geographic information system) technology to enable users (and kids) to view data easily. It has an interactive, digital map that is easy to use! You have the ability to interact with the dashboard, click on different items, and even move the map.
GIS is all about gathering data, working with it, and understanding it based on its location and the data around it.
There are many ways to celebrate GIS for people of any age or any industry.
