When you use GPSKit you'll notice a little blurb warning you to respect the license agreements of the map services you are using... this is apparently their way of absolving themselves of any responsibility for what you might do with their software. I'm guessing they sort of fly under the radar since they are a small company and they limit the size of the area you can cache... This probably his keeps the systematic tile download from popping up on the radar of any of the map providers (Google, Bing, etc...). There really isn't a technical limitation that would prevent downloading and caching any tiled map service - you just need to figure out the order of the tiles in the cache and write the appropriate routines... for instance ESRI stores their tiles in a Z,Y,X hierarchy vs. Z,X,Y for other services. Garafa have basically created their own tile display engine that can display tiles stored locally regardless of the source. As far as I know their isn't a license available for purchase to use Google/Bing tiles offline. -Mike

What is the status of labeling in the 10.2 SDK? The documentation references labelinginfo under the AGSFeatureLayer class, which is an array of AGSLabelClass objects... is there a label engine implemented in the SDK that would support labeling features from an offline geodatabase? The documentation for those objects is a bit sparse, I'm curious if these are just frameworks that will be further implemented in a future release... if it is implemented any chance a sample might show up soon? -Mike

As I understand it the only way to make a .geodatabase file right now is to create one by checking out an ArcGIS Server feature service on the device. In the near future you will be able to generate a .geodatabase file in ArcGIS Desktop and then manually move it to an iOS device using iTunes file sharing. At least - this is how I interpret the process based on ESRI's documentation. The .geodatabase file is a SQLite database with a little ESRI special sauce, so you can probably crack it open by changing the extension and opening in any SQLite viewer. -Mike

Congratulations on getting 10.2 out the door! I wonder if someone at ESRI could give a brief explainer of the mechanics behind the sync process being used for the beta offline GDB functionality? We have been using our own offline data collection and sync framework via JSON files; and from a cursory browsing of the new 10.2 docs it looks like the new version might be using JSON to sync as well? I noticed there is mention of sync failing mysteriously, which is an issue we've encountered using JSON and the feature service REST endpoint. We've enabled a number of workarounds to mitigate the issue but I'm wondering if perhaps we are seeing the same phenomena. Thanks!

You probably want to use a scanner from a manufacturer that provides an API - A quick search revealed that Socket Mobile has an SDK for their scanners: http://www.socketmobile.com/ http://www.socketmobile.com/Support/developer/SocketScan/ -Mike

Questions for the ESRI folks: Are you planning any further updates to the 10.1.1 series SDK before or after 10.2 is released? Specifically we are concerned with the 2GB tile cache limitation. I've read elsewhere in the forum that you are planning to address it at 10.2, however that will make it difficult to integrate any fixes into our currently deployed apps. I assume that a major update like 10.2 will include many breaking changes, and require a fair amount of effort to migrate apps (like the 2.3 to 10.1 transition). Can you give any update on plans to update the 10.1.1 SDK up to and beyond the 10.2 release? Can you give even a rough estimate of the release timeframe for the 10.2 SDK? At the dev conference it sounded like the UC was the release goal, and that has come and gone without much in the way of an update on timeline. We are currently planning or developing several apps, and any sort of idea of a release schedule (fall, winter, spring?) would be extremely helpful. Thanks for all your hard work, we are really loving the SDK and the new capabilities it has given us for mobile data collection. -Mike

This is a bug with the 10.1 series SDK - can't use tile caches larger than 2GB: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/85507-Large-tile-packages-not-displaying-in-latest-SDK I'm still waiting to hear what the fix will be from ESRI - for now... if you absolutely must use large tile caches you should probably revert to the 2.3 SDK. Otherwise you might have to create a series of smaller tile caches and rig up some code to swap them out based on the map extent. Sorry there isn't better news - I am eagerly awaiting a fix for this! Hopefully ESRI pushes out a fix for the 10.1.1 SDK and doesn't just hold off until 10.2 is released. -Mike

Curious if there has been any progress figuring out why .tpk files larger than 2GB can't display using the iOS SDK. This issue is having a serious impact on the apps we produce. Also - we've been detecting some pretty steady memory leaks from tile extraction processes when using .tpk files in the 10.1.1 SDK. -Mike

We use a small default tile package baked into the application, and then side load the larger package through iTunes. I've tried swapping the larger cache in as the version included in the .ipa but it didn't make any difference. Will send you my email so we can transfer you a copy of the .tpk files -Mike

There is an iOS simulator included with xCode that allows you to develop and test on a Mac without having access to an iPhone or iPad. Having a machine running OSX is required for iOS development with the ESRI SDK.

We're building an application that loads large (3GB+) tile package from the app's iTunes documents directory. In our apps developed using the latest version of the SDK the app fails to open the large .tpk file and displays a white screen. I'm throwing errors to NSLog when running the app in the simulator and it is returning: Domain=com.Esri.ArcGIS.ErrorDomain Code=10003 "Failed to open file. May not be a valid tile package." UserInfo=0x9ac7850 {NSLocalizedDescription=Failed to open file. May not be a valid tile package. At the same time - a smaller .tpk file packaged from the same tile cache will display correctly (~300mb in size). Both tile packages were built on the same computer using 10.1 Has anyone else observed this behavior? Any tips? Thanks -Mike

I've got a large (20gb) DEM mosaic'd from geotiff tiles into an 10 file geodatabase. The raster appears to function just fine when used with 3D analyst to cut cross sections (see image #1). However, our users need to use the raster in 9.3.1 with HEC GeoRAS. I moved the raster to a 9.3.1 file geodatabase, but when they cut cross sections with 3D analyst in 9.3.1 they get a strange "stair stepped" result (see image #2) Any ideas? The 9.3.1 data works just fine in ArcGIS 10...

I like the idea of background geoprocessing as well, however the implementation does leave a bit to be desired. Not to be too pedantic, but side-scrolling marque text is so HTML 2.0. The current notification system does not provide enough visual feedback for users. I can't keep track of how many of our causal users are baffled when they execute a geoprocessing task, only to have "nothing" happen. Eventually a little bit of scrolling text pops up in the bottom of the window... with no indication of progress. I think many users would prefer something akin to a cue window... think of the download cue in modern web browsers. You issue a geoprocessing task, and the process is immediately added to a floating window with a progress bar.
