We roll with iPads in Lifeproof cases. We use the Nuud case which doesn't have any sort of screen cover, the case just seals against the glass. Using this configuration we have been very happy with the ruggedness of the device, we have had some hardware failures in extreme conditions, mostly when working in areas of high humidity and moving between a warm moist field tent to a cold outdoor environment. Basically we were getting condensation in the Lifeproof case which would kill the iPad. We added some desiccant strips that solved that issue. I'm not sure if that issue was addressed in the newer Lifeproof cases, sine we only ever experienced that with our older iPad 4 units. Haven't had an issue with our newer iPad mini or iPad Air units. One additional thing we do is purchase AppleCare+ with all our devices. Extended warranties are common, but being able to walk into an Apple Store with a busted iPad and walk out 15 minutes later with a replacement for $50, even if it is totally our fault, is pretty great. You want to get the LTE version of the iPad if you need the internal GPS. In our experience this has proven to be on par with a Garmin for accuracy. We also use them with iSXBlue and EOS real-time sub meter GPS units when we have a data accuracy requirement that requires it, and they have proven to work as advertised.

This is recorded using the iOS simulator correct? Do you experience the same thing on a physical device? I've noticed a marked difference in drawing speed on the simulator - especially when emulating devices with retina displays. I assume the host Mac is working overtime to simulate the GPU.

Figured this out - it is our helpful corporate blockpage interfering because ESRI hosts the pod file in their box account and our company likes to remind us that they don't really approve of cloud storage. Carry on.

Since the Quartz Beta 2 release I've been unable set up new projects using the ArcGIS Runtime using CocoaPods. When running Pod Install or Pod Update I get an error like this: End-of-central-directory signature not found. Either this file is not a zipfile, or it constitutes one disk of a multi-part archive. In the latter case the central directory and zipfile comment will be found on the last disk(s) of this archive.

What is your source for this? It is my understanding that apple rounds its core location to decimeter level at best. Has this issue been resolved in collector to allow the external gnss receiver to overwrite apple's core location value to centimeter accuracy, or is that specific to the gps manufacturer and not a collector issue? I have not experienced this at all developing for iOS. The default logging mechanism in Objective C (NSLog) defaults the display of float numbers to 6 digits (approx 11cm for lat/long at the equator) but the core location data is a full float and you can set it to return as many decimal places as you think appropriate. If an application is converting a float to string and only capturing the standard 6 decimal places that's on the developer not Apple.

This is pretty much expected behavior. As far as I can tell data added in a checkout replica is populated with a temp ID until it is sync'd with ArcGIS Server. Just another reason you shouldn't rely on ObjectID for anything.

Ahh gottcha - so is a new version being created every time you take a map offline in Collector? Would it be possible to consolidate that somehow to have multiple mobile devices all using a single version to cut down on the number of reconciles you need to do?

You might look into the available memory on your database server - we've found that when using archiving the server needs a ton of RAM to sync. This is especially true if you are doing photo attachments.

Easy tiger. This seems like a reasonable method you've got there. I can think of a few other ways to accomplish the same thing, but it's a little difficult to judge one way or the other without knowing the business decisions that are guiding your thought process. If it works for you who are we to judge?

I work in iOS but it looks like it works the same on both platforms, but please forgive me if I flub some of the details. You get the info about standalone tables in the feature service using getTables() on the featureServerInfo object. You then need to add the tables you want to your layerQueries just like you add the feature layers.

This issue is caused by the database archive taking up too much room. We bumped the RAM on our database server and it fixed the issues. It is possible switching from a database with archiving to one with versioning may fix it as well. Reference: Are SQL Server, ArcGIS Server, Runtime/Collector really production ready?!?

You can include the stand-alone tables in an offline geodatabase. If I recall correctly there has to be at least one spatial layer to publish a feature service, but sometimes when we have an app with minimal spatial data we just have a token spatial layer and do everything else as stand-alone tables.

I know the runtime SDK has a certain level of ability to do things with network data sets, mostly to do with routing and navigation. What I can't seem to find is any way to do linear referencing-type activities. For Example: Generate a point X distance along a specified route from start point Y Return point at measured distance X along line Y Etc... Is there any plan to add this type of functionality to the runtime in the future? This type of thing comes up when we are doing apps for construction monitoring, or if field users want to generate a test point along a transect. We currently have ways to "fake it" using stationing points or other data like that.

We make extensive use of offline geodatabases in our apps. It seems like all our sync operations (download replica, sync changes) are very slow to run. Generally a database with minimal content will take about 90 seconds to 2 minutes to generate on the server. This doesn't really seem to change until our databases grow to 1-200mb in size, then the wait gets even longer. What is taking ArcGIS Server so long? What can we change or optimize in our server configuration to speed things up? Any plans to improve the performance of these operations in future releases of AGS or the runtime?
