we cannot have specific properties for subtypes besides the properties of its parent class. There are some properties that can be specific for Subtypes that differ from the properties of the feature class; examples of this are the attribute domains and default values. However, the field collection for a feature class also applies to the Subtypes; so the field collection cannot differ between the feature class and subtype. And hence, since no field can be added to subtype class, there is no way that it can have domains. To be clear, you can assign different attribute domains to a field at the subtype level.

Hello, I am currently facing problems to add custom fields to subtypes of a feature class. The situation is this: one feature class has many subtypes, only one of the subtypes need to have a new field which is not in the parent feature class. This field has a coded value domain on it. feature class: Utility Subtypes: sewage lines, other lines, electric_cable....etc To electric_cable I need to add a field cable_type[domain: distribution_line/transmission_line]. In ArcCatalog I am unable to do this. Is this possible? This is not possible. Subtypes inherit the fields from the feature class; so when a field is added to a feature class; it applies to all subtypes. If you have a scenario like this where a field only applies to 1 subtype and not others; that is case where we recommend that you break the feature class out into multiple feature classes. The other option is to add the field to the feature class and not populate it for the subtypes to which it does not apply. I wouldn't recommend this option, it can lead to confusion and incorrect data. It's very rare to have a single class called "utility lines" with different types of utility lines contained within it. Besides their geometry and some basic attributes; sewage lines and electric cables have very little in common.

Ted, can you supply the schema of the Topology you created at 10.1 so that I can recreate it here? I'm not able to reproduce the issue that you're reporting. thanks,

Another more serious issue, is after enabling editor tracking on a 10 sde database (then disabling it), the 10 access speeds have slowed to a crawl. We started on 10.1 updates because of the issue. 10 minutes to select a record and have it show up in the Attributes window. When relationship classes are in place, the table fields have a serious lag time. Editing Anno has slowed to a crawl. Ted, we have not seen this issue and I can't reproduce it. Can I ask you to contact Tech Support and open an incident so they can trouble shoot it and try and get a repro case for us to look at?

What doesn't make sense is where 10.0 and 10 SP1, support editor tracking , and SP2, SP3, SP4, and SP5 don't support editor tracking. Ted, to clarify, 10.0 Final and 10.0 SP1 do not support Editor Tracking. We added checks starting at SP2 to look for datasets with new functionality to prevent users from incorrectly opening them with an older release where the new functionality was not supported which could lead to data loss/corruption.

Ted, This is by design. Once a dataset is given 10.1 specific functionality; such as enabling Editor Tracking, 10.0 clients can no longer open that dataset; as the 10.0 client has no knowledge of the 10.1 specific functionality. So, if you want to enable Editor Tracking, all clients accessing the data need to be 10.1 clients. Craig

Have you confirmed there are no other active connections to the Geodatabase? The upgrade process requires no other connected users in order to run.

Your best course of action to move forward is to contact ESRI Technical Support so they can troubleshoot this issue. Without the data and a reproducible case, it's difficult to pinpoint the issue. Regards,

Please contact Technical Support and log an incident to have this issue examined. They will need to reproduce the issue, so they will ask for a database dump. This is the best way to handle this issue, you may be running into a legitimate bug that we need to examine. If you just run the Upgrade without the Pre-Requisite check, the Upgrade will probably fail since the same checks are performed.

Ted, most of the points you raise are resolved in Pre-release. Let us know if you see the same issues once you've had a chance to test it.

You're correct, you do not need sources or sinks defined in order to perform a trace, but you do need to define sources or sinks in order to set flow direction using the Set Flow Direction command. There are ways to set flow direction that based on digitized direction that does not use sources/sinks, but that is not available through the Toolbar. If you don't have any sources/sinks defined in the geometric network in the personal, I'm not clear geodatabase on how the Set Flow Direction command is enabled. Can you explain what it is you're trying to do? That might help me figure out what is going on.

A few questions: - Is the data versioned and are you editing when you try and click the Set Flow Direction command? - Do you have junction feature classes defined as Sources/Sinks in your geometric network?

Jim, There's two ways to do this; Copy/Paste and XML Import/Export. Copy/Paste should work, if you're running into errors, we need to look into them and figure out what the issue is, can you contact Technical Support about this issue? XML Import/Export of the feature dataset will pick up the relationship class within the feature dataset, should you should be able to use it as well if Copy/Paste isn't working for you.
