There is a thing that I simply don???t understand or what I am not willing to accept. When using ArcPy.sa to create raster output in the Python window, the name the raster is given in the workspace (in my case a fgdb) is based on the function applied (e.g. ifthe_ras* when using a Con statement, or FocalSt_* when using focal statistics, etc). What I would really like (and I know I don???t stand alone in this) is that the name I have assigned when executing the command is used for the name of the raster in my output workspace. Use the env.overwriteOutput setting and when the output raster exists and should not be overwritten throw an error. But please don???t make my script twice as long since after every command: myRaster = Some ArcPy.sa command I have to say myRaster.save("myRaster"). I???m glad that ArcGIS 10(.1) is a lot more stable than the 9.4 beta. When I was using 9.4, I regularly ended up with a crash and a fgdb filled with a lot of rasters for which it was impossible to derive what they were based on??? Should I submit this in the ideas section, or can we just consider this a bug, that can be resolved in the next release?

Thank you. But why can I choose different files when Creat LAS dataset? There is no problem selecting LAS files when I want to make this. Hi Ann Karin, Just have a look at the two attached screendumps of the Dialogs. One is the Windows standard File Open Dialog (used in the Create LAS dataset tool) and the other is the ArcGIS File Open Dialog (used in the Point File Information and when converting LAS to Multipoint). There are quite some differences. So either they are using the wrong dialog to browse for LAS file or they're using the right dialog, but the dialog has not been adapted to support LAS files yet... Either way, this should be resolved by Esri. Kind regards,

Have you tried to create a point file informatin file for one or two lasfiler? In 10.0 you select a file or kataolog top of the window. This is now gone. And I can not selected any las files if I click the icon to retrieve files. I'll just chosen directory. And then make the point file information for this. Hi Ann Karin, Now I understand the issue. You are right, there is a problem with the selection of .LAS files in several tools. This is also mentioned in the thread below. http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/42096-Trouble-with-.LAS-files The 10.0 version used the standard (windows) File Open dialog, which uses "All Files (*.*)". In 10.1 this dialog has been replaced by the one based on ArcGIS (ArcCatalog). Since this dialog does not yet suport .LAS files (yet?) as a supported format, the LAS file are not shown. To go around this open your Windows Exporer and drag and drop the LAS file(s) from the Windows explorer to the input box on the Point File Information Dialog (see attached image). This will work for now (or just place the LAS file in a separate folder and select that folder). Kind regards,

Has anyone else had the same issue? Hi Parrish, You are right! The same happens on my computer. Browse to the folders with LAS files and none are listed. Maybe it is using the IGxObjectFilter which does not support LAS files. You can experience the same behavior when you navigate to the LAS folder using ArcCatalog. It won't show the LAS files... It would be nice to be able to select a LAS file when it is the only possible input for a tool. Esri will have to look into that! The tread below is also related to the same issue: http://forums.arcgis.com/threads/41428-Point-file-information?p=143253&viewfull=1#post143253 Kind regards,

ArcGis 10.1 supports only use of folders. Not files anymore. Why? Hi Ann, Could you elaborate on the above? If I start the Point File Information tool I am able to select both files and folders. Also the Help states that this is possible: http://resourcesbeta.arcgis.com/en/help/main/10.1/index.html#//00q900000025000000.htm Kind regards,

I downloaded the file to experiment with. I seem to be unable to load *.las (v1.2) in ArcScene (and toolboxes). Could you tell me how to do this? Hi Luc, You have to create a LAS dataset with the new "Create LAS Dataset" tool. You'll find this in 3D Analyst Tools / Data Management / LAS Dataset (or just do a search for "LAS Dataset"). You are not able to add LAS files to ArcMap or ArcScene directly, but after you create the LAS Dataset you're good to go. Which operating system are you using? ... If you can consistently reproduce it, we'd need to know your system settings.... Hi Kevin, Rhonda, Here are the specs of my system: - It is a Dell laptop Latitude E6400 - with an Intel Core 2 Duo CPU (P8600 @ 2.4 GHz) and 4GB RAM - running Windows XP SP3 - ArcMap ArcInfo Build 2783 - Regional settings are Dutch The steps taken which result in the crash are: - Open the tool Focal Statistics from the ArcToolbox - Click the Tool Help button from the tool GUI - Scroll down in the Help to the Syntax section - Press on any link (nbrCircle, nbrRectangle, etc) will cause ArcMap to crash As mentioned before, when the Help is opened manually (C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.1\help\spatial_analyst_toolbox.chm or through ArcInfoMain.chm) the crash does not occur. If you need more information please let me know. Kind regards,

As a suggestion, which probably doesn't apply to beta, I never use the built-in help but the online help since it separates ArcMap from the help and it is uptodate...for future consideration...in fact esri should consider online help as the first goto, then if no web access, then the online help Hi Dan, Thanks for the suggestion. I will keep it in mind. Kind regards,

Today I was doing some analysis using Spatial Analyst on ArcGIS 10.1. At some moment I wanted to look into the neighborhood settings of the Focal Statistics functionality. I opened the Help of the tool, scrolled down to neighborhood settings and clicked on the link "nbrCircle". This crashed my ArcMap session. I couldn't believe this happened and thought it was not going to be reproducible, but the second time it happened again. Also using another link, like "nbrRectangle", caused my ArcMap session to crash. When I open the Help manually (C:\Program Files\ArcGIS\Desktop10.1\help\spatial_analyst_toolbox.chm) and navigate to the Neighborhood toolset and Focal Statistics and click on the nbrCircle link it displays the topic as it should do. Can anyone reproduce this error or is it just me?

You might try the txt2las utility from LasTools: http://www.cs.unc.edu/~isenburg/lastools/ Indeed Clayton is right, the LAS tools by Martin Isenburg are a great resource for converting ASCII files to LAS (and for a lot more). It would be nice though if Esri would get in touch with Martin Isenburg and include some of this functionality in ArcGIS, in order to avoid the command line usage. BTW I used the command below to convert a PTS file to LAS which was successfully converted to LAS dataset and visualized in ArcScene: txt2las -i Vopak023col.txt -parse xyzsRGB -skip 1 -o vopak023col.las -set_version 1.2 I wasn't able to import the intensity (4th column) since the value is out of range...

Hi Richard, That is an interesting case you have here. I??ve tried to do it also and get the same result you have. Apart from the wrong order, and the missing points, ArcGIS seems to invent its own point locations! When you zoom to the lower left corner of the data, you??ll see that the a vertex of the created line is between the points with FID 31 and 32. This happens at several locations. I tried a workaround the sort order by adding X and Y columns and exporting the table to DBF. In Excel I sorted the data on the GPS_second field and saved the file. After adding it to ArcMap, I created XY Events and exported the layer to a featureclass (in a FGDB). Using this point featureclass in the Points to Line tool resulted in the proper order of the points, but still there are points missing and new locations created. I seems to be related with the coordinate system. If you project the points to a projected coordinate system (like NAD_1983_UTM_Zone_15N) and then use the Points to Line tool, it will honor the sort field and the locations. In 10.0 the results is correct (locations and sort order). The underlying script has been rewritten in 10.1 beta to implement the new da (data access) module. Apparently, there are some situations where it is not working correctly. Esri should look into this! Cheers!

There are several websites that provide LAS files. I have tested ArcScene 10.1 beta with some of the LAS files located at http://liblas.org/samples/. LAS file "2398_400.las" contains RGB values. Alternatively, you could use software to convert your text files to LAS. I have installed LP360 (30 day evaluation) and it can convert text files (like PTS) to LAS. Make sure to choose LAS version 1.2 in LP360 to enable RGB. Good luck!
