Hi all, I am spending couple of days to add go GoogleMapsLayer to the map but I got exception on map.addLayer(new gmaps.GoogleMapsLayer({visible: false})). Is there a restriction by Google when accessing the gmaps api through internal network? Why the example in http://gmaps-utility-gis.googlecode.com/svn/tags/gmapslayer/1.0a/examples/gmapslayer.html working fine, but when I save the html example to my computer on the internal network, the example doesn't work. jeff, how did you achieve to load the tiled service as dynamic ? was it via js api ? and why didn't esri recommend such an approach? thx! We just did new ArcGISDynamicMapServiceLayer but gave it the path of a cached url.  If i remember right, it worked in firefox only. ... View more

We went down this path for a different reason.  We have a very complicated (read "slow") mapservice that is cached, but changes frequently.  We were trying to just accessed the cached service as dynamic, which kinda worked, but after talking with ESRI technical support, is "highly discouraged" You best bet is likely two services, one cached and one dynamic, with a custom extent change handler that swaps your layer out based on the LOD. ... Ok, so the fun got spoiled.  And this makes sense.  I opened fiddler again and copied out a map service query URL from the Flex app... and sure enough, when pasted it back in the browser, it showed the response.  So that explains that.  I can, in theory, just change the parameters in the url and get a different response.  Boo hoo.  Guess there's no way around this unless I enable security for the server... ugh. So, the security rationale for disabling the service directory doesn't run very deep. But hey, how many malicious AGS/REST/JSON hackers could there be anyway?  😉 Yes the only way around that is enable security on the service and hardcode the token/credentials in the app.  To me, not worth it. ... Thanks for all the options.  Just curious though... what's the point of "disabling the services directory" then?  I mean, if you do that, you might as well uninstall arcgis server... if you are using it for web access to map services. Didn't you ask how to do this? All the endpoint are still accessible, just not the root directory. Your flex app uses http calls.  If your app can do it, so can a browser. For example: My folder http://www.mymanatee.org/arcgis/rest/services/ is forbidden but http://www.mymanatee.org/arcgis/rest/services/base-map/ is accessible. This allows a user to get to the service they need, but not "nose" around and see what else we are hosting. ... View more

I don't think you can disable the endpoints, they have to be accessible.  You can, however, disable the root directory.  Doesn't prevent "stumble upon" discovery of individual services, but prevents browsing. We took the easy route, and just used a web application firewall (reverse proxy) for our servers.  We then just make endpoints for the subfolders in /arcgis/rest/services/foldername but not the /services directory. Thats correct.  so you have 3 options 1: Draw your PA data dynamically and let it reproject on the fly 2: Reproject your PA data to 102100 3: Leave your PA data as State Plane, but change the coordinate system of the Data Frame (in the mxd) to 102100.  Then recache your data.  Caching will be slower (due to the reprojection) but the data can remain State Plane, and the web app will still be fast due to cached data. We choose option 3, our data are all in florida State Plane, but all our dataframes are 102100 so it is compatible with ArcGIS Online/Bing/Google. ... View more
