If you want to use a dynamic layer, then yes you need to publish the mxd to arcgis server. You may also look into arcgis.com as alot of the functionality you want might be pre-built.

If you are looking to get a location from an address the geocoder is exactly what you want. If you are looking to get "stuff nearby" like businesses, etc, from a map click, then that functionality is not available unless you have the "stuff" in your own spatial database.

Buffering a point returns a polygon. YOu should not be using a buffer (or it should be a separate operation). after var p1 = new esri.geometry.Point(x1, y1, new esri.SpatialReference({wkid:102100}) ); var p2 = new esri.geometry.Point(x2, y2, new esri.SpatialReference({wkid:102100}) ); var geometry = new esri.geometry.Polyline(new esri.SpatialReference( {wkid:102100} )); geometry = geometry.addPath([p1,p2]); you have a polyline. if you then do var symbol = new esri.symbol.SimpleLineSymbol(esri.symbol.SimpleLineSymbol.STYLE_SOLID, new dojo.Color([255, 0, 0]), 3); var graphic = new esri.Graphic(geometry,symbol); map.graphics.add(graphic); you are done. No buffer needed.

Since you posted in the javascript forum, here is a js example http://help.arcgis.com/en/webapi/javascript/arcgis/help/jssamples/map_showloading.html I imagine Silverlight might have a similar one.

It has just dawned on me the gaping security hole of allowing someone (maybe even the public) to upload a file (picture, pdf, etc.. ) directly into the database using an edit widget. Is any file validation/virus scanning occuring? or do I need to do that in my app. And if I do need to do it, how do I intercept the upload?

Is there anyway to make a TextSymbol multi-lined? Our map is quite small and many of the labels go off the map so I need to reduce the width of the label by putting some values onto two lines. The product manager does not want to use a popup as it must look like a label. Any clues? I don't have a sample in front of me to test, but have your tried \\n in the text?

I am not sure about your question, could you be more specific or post some code? Are you having trouble 1. Selecting/Identifying a point? 2. Getting the Point ID from the result 3. Building a url or ajax call to connect to the other database 4. Display the result from the other database? Any or all of the above?

I am not sure if I am seeing the behavior I should be. When I use the editor toolbar, and selection a feature, as soon as the selection is complete it "deselects" the selection tool (the arrow goes from selected/highlighted to not selected. This is very counter-intuitive to me. If i select something, and then click again, it should still be in selection mode. Its very frustrating to have to have to keep clicking the arrow. Is there anyway to make it stay selected?

Does the geometryService.Project() method work with polygons? According to the documentation, it should work for any geometries, but I can only get it to work with points. When I try using it to reproject a polygon, it returns nothing. Yes it works with all geometry types. Please paste an email of your code. You can also try the rest service directly to make sure you are getting the syntax right.

Well right now you are just pushing in the existing symbol. So before the push, you can override the symbology. else if (geometry instanceof esri.geometry.Point) { var symbol = graphics.symbol; symbol.setColor(new dojo.Color([255,255,0,0.5])); //change to what you want here //then pass the modified symbol instead of the default geometries.push({ "geometryType" : "esriGeometryPoint", "x" : geometry.x, "y" : geometry.y, "symbol" : symbol.toJson() }); Hi I am using the Map2PDF REST service provided by Rahul Ravikumar and am trying to set the point symbol's style when graphics are added to the map. When I set this within my API it does not seem to translate over to the js file so I am looking at altering the code within the js file itself... The following code is what is provided when setting the point symbol:- else if (geometry instanceof esri.geometry.Point) { geometries.push({ "geometryType" : "esriGeometryPoint", "x" : geometry.x, "y" : geometry.y, "symbol" : graphics.symbol.toJson() }); How can this be modified to specifically set the size of the point? Thanks
