Let's back up a moment. What are your steps, and how have you determined it doesn't work? All you have to do for the steepest path button to work, is click a point on the map and it will draw a line graphic as the result. The surface to use should be the active layer on the 3d toolbar. You're not getting any graphics? What version are you using, including any SP's? Best, Eric

If the data is in GCS_WGS_1984 you will find the cell sizes in the properties to be a little confusing, as well as having quite small values. This is because the units are in decimal degrees, not meters/feet. For example, I have some 30m ASTER data for the world, but when I check the properties the cell size is 0.00027777778, which is due to the data being in GCS. If you plan on analyzing the dem, you should project it such that the linear units are the same as the vertical units so that X, Y, and Z are consistent, otherwise expect to be calculating Z factors and using them when appropriate. Note that Z factors change with latitude so if your extent is very large a single Z factor won't cut it. When projecting a dem, do not accept the default resampling in the Project Raster tool. Switch it to bilinear to save yourself some headaches down the road. Nearest resampling is not meant for a dem. Best, Eric

Can you describe why it's not working? Perhaps, the lines are very short... Is your DEM hydro conditioned and/or does it have sinks filled? Best, Eric

GRID can be written to any network location as long as you have permission to write there. Not that someone shouldn't figure out why you can't write GRID's to your location, but if Tiff is working for you, why do you need the Esri GRID format? Tiff works with a lot more applications than our proprietary format GRID. -Eric

I don't believe it's part of the template. Just some guys upstairs playing around with our capabilities, nothing official. That doesn't mean you can't do it though. Eric

Sam, What is it exactly that you want to calculate? There are a number of good tools in the 3D toolbox that could get you going depending on your needs. Attached is a screenshot of the city lights in Philadelphia from our Virtual City Template. It??s just point features symbolized with semi-transparent spheres based on the approximate illumination distance of each streetlight. You can intersect that sphere with stuff (eg: the ground in a public space) to calculate the area of effective light coverage, for example. Best, Eric

David, You probably didn't use an inline variable for the output raster, which is why it was overwriting. See, Examples of inline model variable substitution, specifically Ex 2. Best, Eric
