By data source, Joe means the person or place where you got the data. There might be metadata that describes what the coordinate reference system is. It's pretty obviously in latitude-longitude (degrees) so probably WGS84 or it could be OSGB 1936 because it's in the UK. If your goal is to upload it to a server that requires EPSG:3857 also known as Web Mercator, you'll first have to define the data as a geographic coordinate system (degrees), then use the Project Tool to create a copy of the data that's in the projected coordinate system that you want to use. Now that Neil Ayres has the data displaying[1], you can export the layer using World from Space. Right-click the layer in the table of contents. Select Data, Export Data In the Export dialog, choose the data frame's coordinate system option. [1] oblique orthographic has a complex "horizon" (valid area of the projection in lat/lon coordinates) so the drawing delay is due to the clipping of the polygons.

Hello Stefan, I think you defined the coordinate system to be the same as your other data layers (using the shapefile's property page and the Define Projection tool). Unfortunately, the shapefile is not georeferenced to that coordinate system but some other coordinate system. That's why it shows up very far away from the rest of the data. The coordinate values do not make sense for its defined coordinate system. You will have to figure out what the coordinate system actually is. What are the extents (as Dan asked you to provide)? Did the shapefile already have a coordinate system? If it didn't, then you will need to figure out what the coordinate system should be. Check with the data provider first. If you can't find the information, please post the shapefile's extents (coordinates), plus the area that it represents (city, country). Hi Jennifer, Okay, a few questions. What's the data frame using? NAD 1983 UTM 10N or 11N? Did the definition query work? What coordinate system is the earthquake layer in? NAD 1983 (a geographic coordinate system)? What's the coordinate system of the buffer layer? I think it should be NAD 1983 (lat/lon). What are the extents of the buffer layer? Please add it to a new data frame. One possibility is that the buffer layer has a UTM coordinate system, but the actual coordinate values are in decimal degrees. That would lead to the buffer data being far to the south west of the other layers in the data frame (in UTM). That's a good try, exporting the layer. I guess I was coming from TRANSFORM where you may want to specifically ask for similarity/helmert in order to maintain 90 degree angles in your building polygons or street intersections. Dan, did you mean a similarity tfm exists "when translation = dx,dy but theta=0, a=1,b=1 (scale axis) in otherwords a simple transformation"? If so, it would be a = b (scale axis) whereas a "full" affine can have different x and y axis scaling values.

Try transformation method--similarity rather than affine. Affine allows data to "skew". That is, angles can change. Similarity maintains shapes/angles so 90 degree angles should remain 90 degrees.

Hello Jonas, I am afraid that I didn't understand your comment about the Project Tool. If the shapefiles have defined coordinate systems, then you would set the output coordinate system to the appropriate UTM zone. Because the geographic coordinate systems are different, you would also need to set a geographic/datum transformation just like you should be doing in ArcMap. If you have a lot of shapefiles to convert, you can right-click the Project Tool's icon to access a "batch" version. Or if you are familiar with ModelBuilder (or want to learn Modelbuilder!), there are ways to do the same thing. An alternative method is to add a shapefile to your UTM map/data frame. Right-click the shapefile's name in the table of contents and select data, export data. In that dialog, choose "use data frame's coordinate system." Melita

Okay, the map's 1:125000 and there's very little detail that would work for georeferencing. I retract my earlier statement! You may have to use the corner points as the best you've got and call it NAD27. If you can identify a few other interior points, that might help--but the reference data should also be in NAD27, not NAD83 or WGS84. Melita
