Ted, The button should be the same on both toolbars. I tested the latest build today and both worked just fine. 25 minutes seems like a really long time to calculate one isoline. How large is your dem? If you use the two buttons on a small sample dem like the one from the SA tutorial data (9.3 data) does one take longer than the other? Along the lines of gathering user feedback; What do you find useful about this button? Why would you want a single contour line as a graphic? Why not use the Contour or Contour List GP tools? Regards, Our DTM is about 4 GBs, so, it takes awhile. Pretty much all my tests are on large datasets, since that is where issues are typically encountered with ESRI software;) Not really sure of the use of this tool as to why the SA toolbar is kinda not needed, I can get it from the 3D toolbar which still has a lot of stuff to keep the toolbar in play, but then we have both extensions (Some users only have Spatial). The tool itself perhaps could be useful for Appraisers but only if we could expose it in the APIs (GP Services would be used instead), other than that, I would probably not use this as a go to tool, and lean on the GP stuff. I think it is fantastic to FINALLY remove all that legacy stuff, for at the minimum, consistency across the spectrum has been implemented, or at least has started to be implemented.

It is interesting to hear the back story, and perhaps Xienchen, can just use the new GP menu for the Spatial Analyst tools, which may make it easier to view and use. Thanks Eric.

It seems like this toolbar can be combined with something else, it is so limiting in functionality since everything went to gp, perhaps a general Analysis toolbar, that works in conjuntion to the 3D Toolbar for ArcMap, unless beta 2 is coming out with more tools. Personally, I would get rid of the toolbar, and push us to build our own toolbar via the customize mode.

Ted, In 9.3 you can generate a Terrain/TIN from contour data. For SF_Type choose mass points or softline. The same applies to 9.4. If you already have a Terrain and want to include the contours make sure the feature classes reside in the same feature dataset as the terrain otherwise you will not have access to them when executing Add Feature Class to Terrain. Check out this page to learn more about surface feature types. http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?id=3393&pid=3388&topicname=Representing_terrain_source_data_in_feature_classes In 9.4 there is also some new renderers for Terrains; Terrain Contour and Terrain Point renderers. On a side note, contours are generally a derivative of a surface so you should try to avoid a situation where contours are the only input to creating a surface. Photogrammetrically derived mass points is probably one of the best sources of data to build a terrain with, but really you want a combination of SF Types to fully represent the surface. Here are some common types of data used to build terrains. http://webhelp.esri.com/arcgisdesktop/9.3/index.cfm?TopicName=Types_of_source_data_supported_in_terrain_datasets Thanks for the feedback. Thank you Eric Rice. First off, good to know, always good to be reminded of these things. Second, will have to take a look at the renderers.

On the spatial and 3D Analyst Toolbars there is the create contour tool. Is there any difference in the functionality between these two tools. Currently, running the tool on the spatial analyst toolbar generates a contour in about 25 minutes. On the 3D toolbar it has turned by ArcMap white after about 25 minutes. I would imagine the functionality to be equal.

Feature service can be used to edit default or other versions of the dataset. The choice of version should be made when authoring the map that will be published for editing. Can you please explain further on what you mean here? My understanding is that you can register a dataset as versioned or not register a dataset as versioned and feature service can be used for editing dataset in both cases. It just would be nice to not have to generate a mxd each time for each version, so we would have 10 versions with 10 services. Yes, that is what i am saying. If I have a GDB that is versioned, I would also, like to store date that can be edited via non versioned in the same database that may be setup via a relationship class with the versioned layer(s), maybe I am missing something, but I have always had issues when blending these two ways for editing data in the same database.

Hi Ted, The Topo to Raster tool has not been updated for 9.4. Its still the same version of ANUDEM as it is in prior releases. Have you considered processing your data in several pieces utilizing the Margin in Cells option and then mosaicking the adjacent rasters? You might also want to consider creating a Terrain from your large contour dataset. Many of the surface analysis tools have been enhanced in 9.4 to directly analyze Terrains. You can always convert the terrain to a raster later if necessary. Regards, BUMMER. Will have to consider the processing of chunks, just seems like a pain to have to do it this way. Love it, perhaps you can talk to Clayton regarding contours to terrains as a viable workflow.

Has this tool been updated from the old fortran code to something a bit speedier? It currently is very difficult to use with our contour dataset.

At beta 1, the requirement is that the dataset needs to be registered as versioned and default version can be published for editing. At beta 2, editing will be supported for both versioned and non-versioned data. Thanks Ravi So, there will be no support for versions other than default (Would be nice to drive version creation in rest/api, thus edit other versions). For beta 2, it seems like this is a bit limiting, in that we either use version editing or non version editing, but not both, right? We can't have a database that can handle both versioned and non versioned editing, it would have to be either or, such as we are editing Parcels via ArcMap, but the Assessor Tables as part of a CAMA/Property Tax System, could not be stored as part of the GDB and edited via feature access via rest server. Just some thoughts.

I would be nice to have the ability to list the child versions. So, for reporting we can itemize a list of parents to children, just children, or just parents.

Ted, Another option of course is to wrap it in a GP model and make it available as a GP service. --Keyur Yep, thats how we will try and do it. Good advice.

import arcpy as ap #ap.env.workspace = r'C:\94_testing' versionList = ap.ListVersions(r'Database Connections\ACR_GIS@sdemapper - Test Server.sde') #versionList.remove ('dbo.DEFAULT') #versionList.remove ('ACR_FINAL.Master') versionList.sort() for version in versionList: print version So, this is pretty cool, and it is a real list. So, I am assuming we can just feed this into a delete and delete a bunch of versions at once. Very Cool, indeed. 😛

Hey Ted, We promise to build a better, Scene-like 3D rendering viewer in the future. But (sadly) not for 9.4. Appreciate the input. Thanks, Nathan. Alright, I think I like the sound of that, SCENE-like 3D Rendering Viewer, at this point, for things like this, I would totally not expect anything I say or ask for for this level of capability to make it into 9.4, except maybe py stuff.;)
