Mobile GIS technology is transforming how organizations collect data, manage field operations, and make decisions in real time. Mobile GIS apps play a critical role in disaster response, community engagement, environmental initiatives, and field data collection. Learning how to use these tools can help you develop practical, in-demand skills that employers are actively seeking.

In this edition of the Esri Tutorials Spotlight series, we are featuring hands-on tutorials and learning paths that introduce you to mobile GIS workflows using ArcGIS.

Get started with the ArcGIS Survey123 web designer

This tutorial walks you through creating a survey in ArcGIS Survey123 using the web designer. In this scenario, you’re a small business owner who wants to collect information from your customers about their experience at your new food truck.

In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to build surveys in the ArcGIS Survey123 web designer using a variety of question types to collect data that can be mapped and analyzed. In addition to asking questions about how they found the food and the service, you can ask questions to help you decide which channels to use for marketing, where most customers are finding your food truck, and more.

Collect hurricane damage assessments

Hurricane Harvey smashed rainfall records in 2017 when the August storm stalled over Houston, Texas, for four days and dropped 60 inches of rain. According to a 2018 report from the National Weather Service, Harvey inflicted $125 billion in damage, which included the destruction of an estimated 12,700 homes.

After the hurricane, it was important to assess the damage so the city could start rebuilding.

In this tutorial, you'll use ArcGIS QuickCapture, ArcGIS Survey123, ArcGIS Field Maps, and ArcGIS Dashboards to build a system to collect and share damage assessments of residential buildings. You'll use Houston as an example area, but this workflow can be reproduced for field data collection anywhere.

A walkability assessment, or walk audit, is a well-documented community engagement tool to evaluate the built environment for pedestrian safety, accessibility, and ease of use. These assessments involve going out in pairs or small groups and walking along a route in a neighborhood while making observations of the walking experience. The findings are gathered and assessed to determine the types of improvements needed and where they should be implemented to encourage walking.

In this tutorial, you will build a survey with a variety of question types, demonstrating both qualitative and quantitative data collection.
